  • Social innovation now and then in the Church of Sweden
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Diaconia. Journal for the Study of Christian Social Practice. - : Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co, KG. - 1869-3261 .- 2196-9027. ; 7:2, s. 125-141
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social innovation – referring to the development and implementation of new social practicesto improve the quality of life, well-being, relations and empowerment of individualsand communities – shares similarities with the diaconal work performed as part of Christiansocial practices and the welfare services provided by Christian communities and parishes.Based on the results from a study of innovative social practices in the Church of Sweden, this article scrutinizes the character of a selection of historical and contemporary examplesof social innovation in the Church, in order to further develop the knowledge of how to developnew forms of diaconal work related to welfare services as the societal context changes.By pinpointing the content, process, empowerment, innovation and normativity of socialinnovation, the analysis highlights pivotal components in the transition from social exclusionto social inclusion in the Church’s specific settings.

  • Religion between the private and the public : About diaconal studies as an academic field
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Diaconia: Journal for the Study of Christian Social Practice. - Oslo. - 1869-3261. ; :1, s. 44-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sience of diaconia should focus on the religion as a source between individuals and society. On the whole the science of diaconia has to leave the more spiritual perspective on the individual and relate to what happens in the relation between the social practice of Churches and religous organisations and society. That is because religion is more public as researchers has thought it to be. Diaconal studies should therefore look for religion and practices with religious impact on the welfare conditions in pluralist modern societies.

  • Gender and the Study of Christian Social Practice
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Diaconia. Journal for the Study of Christian Social Practice. - Göttingen : Vandenhoeck&Ruprecht. - 1869-3261 .- 2196-9027. ; 1:2, s. 199-213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study of Christian social practice is a field of academic study that is under development. The field needs to feed from several older fields of study. The aim of this article is to point out the need for integrating gender theory and gender studies into the study of “Diakoniewissenschaft”. This is urgent because social care is a highly gendered area even though gender has hitherto been surprisingly invisible in the academic study of this area. The author argues for the integration of both gender and theology – and the combination of them – into the development of “Diakoniewissenschaft”.

  • The gender order of prophetic diaconia
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Diaconia. Journal for the Study of Christian Social Practice. - : Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co, KG. - 1869-3261 .- 2196-9027. ; 8:1, s. 38-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article starts from a growing ecumenical consensus on the importance of prophetic diaconia in relation to the global challenges of the 21st century. The specific question addressed concerns how the churches can lay a better foundation for prophetic diaconia by discarding their traditional gender structure. The more churches free themselves from the patriarchal aspects of their traditions, the more credible they become as social critics – and the more they are free to do their work for the world’s healing. The article builds on a master’s thesis in educational management on deacons as the whistle-blowers of the Church, a role which is coded as female and related to a predominantly male-coded resistance, questioning, and criticism. The article argues that this shows a hitherto neglected area of research that deserves more extensive studies in the future.Read More: http://www.vr-elibrary.de/doi/10.13109/diac.2017.8.1.38#.We3vlVu0Opo

  • Faith-Based Welfare Practice : Reflections from thePerspective of Islamic Theology
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Diaconia. Journal for the Study of Christian Social Practice. - Göttingen : Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. - 1869-3261 .- 2196-9027. ; 8:2, s. 119-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Caring for people who for various reasons have found themselves in crises or are in need of help and support has a central place in the Islamic theological tradition. The task of constructing a social safety net for society’s weaker individuals was inspired by these lines of thought in a Muslim context. Themotive for these interventions takes its starting point in a religious conception of taking care of weak members of society. One of the pillars of faith in Islam, zakat , deals with social care and thus relates to the idea of the welfare. Its forms of expression may vary, ranging from involvement in various forms of charitable contributions to faith-based philanthropic volunteer work. Charitable work that is based on a religious foundation, which in its turn is based on a duty-centered perspective, is founded on notions that a believer shall perform his/her duties fittingly. A true believer is expected not to be egocentric, but to consider his/her fellow men. At the same time, we should not forget that the duty-centered religious perspective contains the idea that anyonewho becomes involved in charitable work also receives something in return. Somewhere in the background lies the notion that a person who performs the religious duty of taking care of a neighbor will be rewarded in one way or another, either in this life or a coming life. The faith-based philanthropic motive may also be based on a religious worldview, but here the reward motive is replaced with care of one’s fellow beings and respect for man’s interior character.
