  • Understanding the Impact of COVID-19 on Agriculture and Food Supply Chains : System Dynamics Modeling for the Resilience of Smallholder Farmers
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal on Food System Dynamics. - : CentMa GmbH. - 1869-6945. ; 12:3, s. 255-270
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • COVID-19 has caused severe agriculture and food supply chain disruptions, significantly affecting smallholder farmers who supply most of the world’s food, specifically their changes in vulnerability, resilience, and food loss and waste. Therefore, the objective of this study was to understand the complex causal and feedback relationships for this system by developing a dynamic hypothesis and causal loop diagrams utilizing the System Dynamics methodology. Results provide a roadmap for dialogue and a framework for case-specific model development and help to guide policy decisions for smallholder farmers’ survival during health crises.

  • Market formation and the role of the farmer in a micro-level agri-food innovation system
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal on Food System Dynamics. - 1869-6945. ; 14, s. 394-406
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim is to investigate the dynamics and driving forces within a micro-level agri-food innovation system, focusing on market formation and the role of the farmer. We applied a qualitative case study approach to the introduction of sweet potato cultivation to Sweden, using the technological innovation systems approach as the analytical tool. The findings highlight the role of farmers as entrepreneurs, and market formation as a driver for the innovation system. Policy implications include that innovation policy instruments need to become more long-term, oriented towards both production development and pre-market formation, and facilitate new arenas for actors’ joint problem-solving.

  • Climate database facilitating climate smart meal planning for the public sector in Sweden
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal on Food System Dynamics. - 1869-6945. ; 8:1, s. 72-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Food consumption corresponds to around 25 % of the total consumption-driven climate change impact in Sweden. Dietary change has a considerable potential to reduce this negative impact. To motivate dietary changes adequate information about food climate impact has to be communicated at the decision making point. This study aims at facilitating availability and communication of such information specifically for meal planners at the public sector. Thereby a database is developed and incorporated into the Diet and Nutrition planning software systems used in planning meals in public kitchens. The results provide the meal planners with the opportunity to design climate-conscious and healthy meals by choosing resource-efficient and nutritious ingredients. This provides the potential of reducing the climate impact of an average meal by about 20%. Given the total amount of ca. 3 million public meals served each day in Sweden, use of this integrated tool has the potential to reduce the climate impact by more than 700 tonnes of CO2-eq per day

  • Agricultural cooperative development and institutional change. Swedish examples from 1990 to 2020
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal on Food System Dynamics. - 1869-6945. ; 13, s. 115-127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper shows how cooperatives’ changing organizational structures can be explained by the Theory of Institutional Change. When a cooperative’s decision makers receive exogenous signals, endogenous processes concerning  organizational adaptations start. Radical changes are met with resistance, such as the conver sion of a traditional cooperative into an entrepreneurial cooperative (where members have individual ownership) or a farmer-controlled business (external investors participate in ownership and governance).  Cooperative memberships and leaderships may have change agents who advocate for new institutions while gatekeepers try to resist them. The development of Swedish agricultural cooperatives from 1990 until 2020 illustrates this theoretical reasoning.

  • Differentiated voting and membership composition – the case of a large Swedish dairy cooperative
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal on Food System Dynamics. - 1869-6945. ; 15, s. 114-129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study comprises theoretical and empirical analyses of differentiated voting rights in the governance of agricultural cooperatives with self-interest seeking members. A survey was conducted among representative samples of members and General Assembly delegates of a large Swedish dairy cooperative while two important decisions were under consideration. Because of the equal voting rights regime, the majority of small-scale farmers encouraged the General Assembly to reject both efficiency-raising measures. However, if the large-scale farmers had had more voting power, both proposals would have been accepted. Because of limited spatial competition, the large-scale members could not “voting by their feet”.

  • Obstacles for agricultural cooperatives in Russia: The competencies of experts
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal on Food System Dynamics. - 1869-6945. ; 13, s. 247-261
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Russian government wants to stimulate the development of cooperatives among private farmers. This study evaluates the competencies of the experts who are to guide potential members. The research team conducted a survey among these experts, measuring three theoretically derived dimensions of competencies: knowledge, skills, and attitudes. The results reveal that the experts’ competencies were poor. The respondents overestimated their competencies. Other factors as well indicate that the prospects for agricultural cooperatives are poor in Russia. The large agribusiness firms have a strong market position and much political power. The legal framework for cooperatives is dysfunctional.

  • Analysis of the supply chain and logistics practices of warqe food products in Ethiopia
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal on Food System Dynamics. - 1869-6945. ; 7, s. 213-228
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Warqe (Enset) is a multipurpose perennial plant, domesticated and grown as a food crop only in Ethiopia. Kocho, bulla, and amicho are food products of warqe. This study analysed the supply chain and logistics practices of warqe foods. Supply chain management concept was used to analyse the warqe-based food chain. Eight supply chain actors were identified. It was observed that the supply chain of warqe foods and the relationship between chain actors was very complex, long and overlapping. The major constraints identified in the chain were poor information flow, poor transportation system, using perishable packaging, lack of cooperation between actors, a poor infrastructure such as road and warehouse services, and poor policies concerning the warqe market. There is a need for cooperation and coordination between the chain actors to create an effective information sharing system. Shared warehouses need to be built near producers and market places. Transportation, packaging and handling need to be improved. Research is required to develop an integrated, efficient and effective logistics for warqe supply and marketing chain.
