  • Competitive capabilities : a contingency perspective
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Operations Management. - 0272-6963 .- 1873-1317.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper we present and test an alternative model for competitive capabilities.Traditionally, a cumulative model has been viewed as having one sequence of buildingoperations capabilities in a firm in support of market needs, including quality, delivery, cost efficiency and flexibility. Although appealing as a conceptual model, empirical testing has not been able to fully support the cumulative model. This paperacknowledges the need for differentiated approaches to managing capability indifferent operating environments. The competitive capability model that is presented istested empirically using data from the High Performance Manufacturing (HPM) study, including three industries and seven countries – a total of 211 plants. The results showthat there is empirical support for differentiating the competitive capabilities; firmsproducing to stock follow a path of quality, delivery and cost, whereas those producingto customer order exhibit a capability path in the order of quality, delivery andflexibility. Thus, while quality and delivery are common, cost and flexibility acts asdifferentiators contingent upon the manufacturing environment.

  • Integrating supply chains for emergencies and ongoing operations in UNHCR
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Operations Management. - : Wiley. - 0272-6963 .- 1873-1317. ; 45:Special Issue, s. 57-72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Humanitarian organizations (HOs) often base their warehouse locations on individuals' experience and knowledge rather than on decision-support tools. Many HOs run separate supply chains for emergency response and ongoing operations. Based on reviews of humanitarian network design literature combined with an in-depth case study of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), this paper presents a warehouse location model for joint prepositioning that incorporates political and security situation factors. Although accessibility, co-location, security, and human resources are crucial to the practice of humanitarian operations management, such contextual factors have not been included in existing network optimization models before. We found that when quantified, and modeled, such factors are important determinants of network configuration. In addition, our results suggest that joint prepositioning for emergency response and ongoing operations allows for expansion of the global warehouse network, and reducing cost and response time.

  • Towards an Holistic Understanding of Disruptions in Operations Management
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of Operations Management. - 1873-1317 .- 0272-6963. ; 18:6, s. 701-718
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper reviews the literature on maintenance management, integrates key dimensions of maintenance within a taxonomy of maintenance configurations, and explores the impact of differing configurations on contextual factors and operational performance. 'Prevention', 'hard maintenance integration' and 'soft maintenance integration' were identifiedas key maintenance variables. Data were collected from 253 Swedish manufacturing companies, and three distinct clusters were identified. 'Proactive Maintainers' emphasized preventive maintenance policies. 'IT Maintainers' relied on computerized and company-wide integrated information systems for maintenance. 'Maintenance Laggers' emphasized all maintenance dimensions to lesser extent than the others. The importance of maintenance prevention and integration differ between contexts. There were subtle performance differences across identified configurations, but preventive and integrated maintenance were more important for companies seeking competitive process control and flexibility. There existed no group with any great emphasis on all three maintenance dimensions, but attaining truly high performance may require a rare mix ofthe three dimensions. This mix of variables could constitute a hypothesized 'World Class Maintenance' group.

  • Information sharing for sales and operations planning: Contextualized solutions and mechanisms
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Operations Management. - : Wiley. - 1873-1317 .- 0272-6963. ; 52, s. 15-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We develop actionable design propositions for collaborative sales and operations planning (S&OP) based on the observation of contexts in which benefits are generated — or are absent — from retail information sharing for a manufacturer. An information sharing pilot project in a real-life setting of two product manufacturers and one retailer was designed. The project resulted in one manufacturer, serving a retailer from its local factory, developing a process for collaborative S&OP, while the other manufacturer serving a retailer from more distant regional factories abandoned the process. The evaluation of the outcomes experienced by the two manufacturers allows us to examine contexts in fine-grained detail and explain why introducing information sharing in the S&OP processes produce — or fail to produce — benefits. The paper contributes to the supply chain information sharing literature by presenting a field tested and evolved S&OP design for non-standard demand situations, and by a contextual analysis of the mechanisms that produce the benefits of retailer collaboration and information sharing in the S&OP process.

  • The impact of free returns on online purchase behavior : Evidence from an intervention at an online retailer
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Operations Management. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0272-6963 .- 1873-1317. ; 67:4, s. 511-555
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Whether free returns create economic value for online retailers is a question of increasing importance. Using order-level data from an online fashion retailer in Sweden, we investigate the introduction of free returns for customers in Denmark starting November 1, 2017, but not for customers in Sweden, Norway, Finland, France, Germany, and the rest of Europe (the control group). Using difference-in-differences, with and without sample matching, the introduction of free returns increased the order bill by 54.95 Swedish Krona (SEK) (9.15%), product variety per order by 0.057 (8.74%), gross margin per order by 29.90 SEK (9.71%), and returns by 0.195 items per order (7.86%). This likelihood of increased returns was generally similar across different product categories. The findings are robust to parallel trends, event studies, placebo effects, alternative control groups (with Scandinavian countries, Sweden and Norway), country-time trends, and correlations between outcome variables. Based on back-of-the-envelope calculations, the cost of offering free returns is greater than the increase in gross profit driven by free returns. Though our results show that free returns may not be of short-term benefit, retailers must also consider the long-term strategic implications of free returns.

  • Judgmental selection of forecasting models
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Operations Management. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0272-6963 .- 1873-1317. ; 60, s. 34-46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we explored how judgment can be used to improve the selection of a forecasting model. We compared the performance of judgmental model selection against a standard algorithm based on information criteria. We also examined the efficacy of a judgmental model-build approach, in which experts were asked to decide on the existence of the structural components (trend and seasonality) of the time series instead of directly selecting a model from a choice set. Our behavioral study used data from almost 700 participants, including forecasting practitioners. The results from our experiment suggest that selecting models judgmentally results in performance that is on par, if not better, to that of algorithmic selection. Further, judgmental model selection helps to avoid the worst models more frequently compared to algorithmic selection. Finally, a simple combination of the statistical and judgmental selections and judgmental aggregation significantly outperform both statistical and judgmental selections.

  • Hybrid digital manufacturing: Capturing the value of digitalization
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Operations Management. - : Wiley. - 1873-1317 .- 0272-6963. ; 69:6, s. 890-910
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A chasm is growing between the advanced technologies available for improving manufacturing operations and those effectively used in practice. The vision of Industry 4.0 is to mobilize industry to seek out these possibilities for improvement and to close the gap between opportunity and reality. However, when compared with more established improvement opportunities such as lean manufacturing, the digitalization of manufacturing lacks in both paradigmatic examples and an understanding of how to achieve the benefits. This lack is a complication of concern: Without an appropriate operations strategy to capture the value of digitalization, manufacturing companies will be unable to focus on technological investments and operational changes. To address this concern, operations management academics must develop new theory through active engagement in the practice of digitalization in manufacturing. This research presents a paradigmatic example, based on engaged scholarship, focused on effectively combining novel object-interactive and conventional manufacturing syntax for benefiting from digitalization in internal operations and the wider supply chain. The contribution to literature is a novel operations strategy—hybrid digital manufacturing—for capturing the value of Industry 4.0 technologies.

  • Computer-based education for patients with chronic heart failure : A randomised, controlled, multicentre trial of the effects on knowledge, compliance and quality of life
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Patient Education and Counseling. - Shannon, Ireland : Elsevier. - 0738-3991 .- 1873-5134. ; 7, s. 128-35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of a single-session, interactive computer-based educational program on knowledge, compliance and quality of life in heart failure patients with special emphasis on gender differences.METHODS: One hundred and fifty-four patients, mean age 70 years, from five heart failure clinics were randomised to either receiving only standard education (n = 72) or standard education and additional computer-based education (n = 82).RESULTS: Knowledge was increased in both groups after 1 month with a trend towards higher knowledge (P = 0.07) in the computer-based group. The increase in knowledge was significantly higher in the computer-based group after 6 months (P = 0.03). No differences were found between the groups with regard to compliance with treatment and self-care or quality of life. The women had significantly lower quality of life and did not improve after 6 months as the men did (P = 0.0001).CONCLUSION: Computer-based education gave increased knowledge about heart failure. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Computers can be a useful tool in heart failure education, but to improve compliance a single-session educational intervention is not sufficient. Gender differences in learning and quality of life should be further evaluated.
