  • They really looked, looked and looked : Contemporary dance, disability and the circulation of emotions
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Alter;European Journal of Disability Research ;Journal Europeen de Recherche Sur le Handicap. - : L'école des hautes études en sciences sociales. - 1875-0672 .- 1875-0680. ; 18:1, s. 5-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the past decade, several inclusive dance projects, in which professional dancers with and without disabilities collaborate, have been started in Sweden. The article explores disabled and able-bodied dancers' and leaders' experiences of and strategies for managing gazes and emotions - in encounters with the audience and other surrounding people - from a phenomenological perspective. Eleven qualitative interviews were conducted. The interviewees meet gazes filled with benevolence, surprise, pity and fascination. The emotions stick to the disabled dancers' bodies, distance them from their own bodies and arouse uneasiness that needs to be handled. However, disabled dancers and disabled persons in the audience may also meet in the gaze of recognition. The companies' internal gazes are important, too. When disabled dancers are only physically integrated or when dierences are hidden, the potential for change gets lost. If choreographers and audiences succeed in looking beyond the body itself, an empathetic identification may take place. Another strategy is to completely break with voyeurism by blocking all gazes. The companies show new ways of interacting, thus expanding the possibilities for both able and disabled bodies.

  • Undesirable Citizens : Education, Care and Control of the "Feeble-minded" in the Swedish Province of Malmöhus, 1900–1950
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Alter;European Journal of Disability Research ;Journal Europeen de Recherche Sur le Handicap. - : Elsevier Masson. - 1875-0672 .- 1875-0680. ; 5:2, s. 104-115
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper contains the main results of a recently completed historical research project about the situation of persons cate- gorized as“feeble-minded” in Sweden. In this study, the case of Malmöhus province constitutes the microhistorical core. Here, educational and care institutions such as schools, asylums and working homes were particularly established in the first half of the 20th century. The motives behind these foundations will be discussed and the working routines in those institutions will be analysed in terms of teaching and after-care of the inmates and their exclusion justified by social constructs such as “uneducable” or “moral imbecile”. This paper aims at demonstrating how feeble-mindedness was perceived as a social problem, and how close the efforts of education and care were connected to eugenic ideology and control. Thereby, the history of the feeble-minded will be interpreted as a striking example of the contradictions of modernity. The coincidence of social inclusion and exclusion was a characteristic of the situation of an undesirable group of citizens in the Swedish society under the era of modernization. This outcome is of high relevance for understanding the early historical development of the Nordic welfare state.

  • Considering the concepts of the lived body and the lifeworld as tools for better understanding the meaning of assistive technology in everyday life
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Alter - European Journal of Disability Research/Journal Europeen de Recherche Sur le Handicap. - : OpenEdition. - 1875-0672 .- 1875-0680. ; 12:3, s. 140-152
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The lives of individuals with physical or perceptual impairments are often filled with various objects that support daily activities and are generally referred to as assistive technologies. These are usually understood as objects relating to individuals' functional capabilities. In this article, assistive technology is instead interpreted and explored in its subjective and social meaning by drawing on continental philosophy within a framework of lifeworld phenomenology and hermeneutics, putting forward existence, embodiment and the sociality of the lifeworld. The long cane as used by visually impaired and blind people is discussed as an example, based on results from two earlier empirical studies. Three themes or dimensions stood out in the analysis: one relating to intersubjectivity and the social world, another relating to embodiment and the lived space, and one in which the long cane is interpreted as a tool for building a new world. These dimensions have been discussed individually in philosophical terms to some degree. However, here they are intertwined and analysed based on empirical research on individuals in the process of learning or using the long cane in everyday life, which gives new meaning to the researched subject. • Doing adulthood through parenthood : notions of parenthood among people with cognitive disabilities
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Alter;European Journal of Disability Research ;Journal Europeen de Recherche Sur le Handicap. - : Elsevier. - 1875-0672 .- 1875-0680. ; 7:1, s. 56-68
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Perspectives on reproduction and developmental disabilities are gradually changing in Sweden. Through this change parents with developmental disabilities are gradually being included within an emergent discourse of “good enough parenting” on certain conditions. The present article explores discourses of reproduction and parenting among adults with developmental disabilities in two Swedish contexts: in a Swedish magazine, “Empowerment”, produced by and aimed at adults with autism, and interviews with people with intellectual disabilities in Sweden. Common to the materials from both studies are a normative reprosexual discourse of parenting and an underlying assumption that parenthood relates to adulthood in the sense that it requires maturity. The stories in the magazine “Empowerment” can be seen as expressing an emergent counter-hegemonic conditional discourse of “good enough parenting” which regards some people with autism as “good enough” parents. In general terms, the stories about parenting in the interview study depict parenting as related to age awareness and, unlike what is found in the material from “Empowerment”, there is no discussion of or reflection on whether or how impairment affects one's opportunity/ability to become a parent.

  • Doing things together : Exploring meanings of different forms of sociality among autistic people in an autistic work space
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Alter;European Journal of Disability Research ;Journal Europeen de Recherche Sur le Handicap. - : Elsevier. - 1875-0672 .- 1875-0680. ; 13:3, s. 168-178
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores different meanings of being social among autistic people who are employed at an autistic-separate workplace in Sweden. The analyses in this paper are based on data from fieldwork at an autistic workspace consisting of autistic people working with peer support directed at young autistic adults in Sweden. Two different forms of sociality, which take place in two different social environments, are highlighted: environments dominated by non-autistic people and those dominated by autistic people. Interest-based sociality includes the importance of having interest-based exchanges with one another, and having common interests and communication based on genuine interest in the topic being discussed. Socially based sociality is, rather, based on social group identification. The first is the dominant form of sociality among the participants, which they connect with being in an autistic space. The second may be viewed as a counter-dominant form of sociality among the participants, which they connect with being in spaces dominated by non-autistic people.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Alter;European Journal of Disability Research ;Journal Europeen de Recherche Sur le Handicap. - : Edititions de l'EHESS. - 1875-0672 .- 1875-0680. ; 17:3, s. 25-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores young autistic adults' energy management in relation to work, leisure activities and social relationships. Energy management strategies serve as different ways for the young autistic adults to sustain their energy balance by trying to understand what increases or reduces their energy levels. In this way, energy can be understood as modes of autistic functionality where the informants' individual energy levels, the contexts in which they find themselves and the strategies they use to influence and form central parts of their everyday lives.

  • Employment opportunities for persons with different types of disability
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Alter;European Journal of Disability Research ;Journal Europeen de Recherche Sur le Handicap. - : OpenEdition. - 1875-0672 .- 1875-0680. ; 9:2, s. 116-129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The employment status of groups with different disabilities wasanalysed as were potentially important moderating factors (workability, structural and individual factors). A secondary analy-sis was performed on 4359 respondents with disabilities fromStatistics Sweden's Labour Market Investigation. The respondentswere divided into six disability groups (communicative-hearing,communicative-speech-reading, communicative-vision, psycho-logical disability, medical disability, physical disability). Logisticregression analyses showed that the probability of being employedwas highest among respondents with hearing disabilities andrespondents with psychological disabilities were least likely tobe employed. Being a woman (very young or old) with onlyprimary education and with partially or very impaired workability, reduced employment opportunities. Higher education didnot increase employment opportunities for respondents withimpaired work ability. In summary, the type of disability is essentialfor employment opportunities, and differences between disabil-ity groups cannot be explained by differences in other variables.

  • Self-representations on social media : Reproducing and challenging discourses on disability
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Alter;European Journal of Disability Research ;Journal Europeen de Recherche Sur le Handicap. - : Elsevier. - 1875-0672 .- 1875-0680. ; 14:2, s. 71-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines self-representations in a social media campaign against the discrimination of people with disabilities. We focus specifically on how these representations are related to various narratives and discourses, and in what ways the representations either adhere to or challenge normative discourses, or whether they offer counter-discourses. Considering that our cultural assumptions are influenced by the representations we are exposed to, we also discuss the possible potential of self-representations for the audience of the campaign. The empirical material consists of a digital activism campaign conducted on Instagram in Sweden that was constructed through self-representations (photos and short texts). The study combines discourse analysis and visual analysis with focus on how the persons present themselves in the campaign, how disability is mentioned and/or displayed, and how a presentation adheres to or challenges a model of understanding disability, such as the medical or social models. We found a diverse set of claims, all with the common goal of acknowledging discrimination, in order to make it visible and bring about change. The narratives identified indicate a variety of strategies for understanding disability and various styles that people adopt to relate to established discourses on disabilities. Through this campaign, the bloggers could find and provide support, but they also took the stage by requesting that the audience listen. The campaign examined in this study can be further understood as an effort and a step towards increased visibility and politicization of disability.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Alter;European Journal of Disability Research ;Journal Europeen de Recherche Sur le Handicap. - : OpenEdition. - 1875-0672 .- 1875-0680. ; 11:3, s. 155-167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden, most adult people with intellectual disabilities live ingroup homes. Independent living and independence are highly val-ued in Swedish politics. Yet there are also parents who live withtheir adult ‘children’ with intellectual disabilities. This article analy-ses eight parents’ stories about living with their adult children withintellectual disabilities. They discuss their daily lives and futurethoughts concerning their children’s living situation. The analysisis conducted from a perspective in which age is seen as a socialpractice and power structure. The parents in this study violateseveral norms through their choices. Their daily lives continue tobe characterized by the adult children’s needs and activities. Theparents are aging and the adult children get older, but householdchores and responsibilities continue to be distributed in the sameway. There is risk that the co-living of parents and adult childrenwill entrench an age structure in which parents are ascribed “eter-nal” adulthood, never transitioning into old age, while the childremains in “eternal” adolescence.

  • A network of expertise : On intertwined knowledge in autism spectrum disorder assessment reports
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Alter;European Journal of Disability Research ;Journal Europeen de Recherche Sur le Handicap. - : ECOLE HAUTES ETUDES & SCIENCES SOC-EHESS, COLL FRANCE. - 1875-0672 .- 1875-0680. ; 17:1, s. 87-102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article discusses an in-depth analysis of four assessment reports documenting the diagnostic procedure of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD henceforth) in pre-school-aged children in Sweden. Authored by professionals (child psychiatrists and child psychologists), the reports contain an account of different observations, interviews, and tests-results held throughout an ASD diagnostic procedure, as well as recommendations for treatments and interventions plan, and have a "mobile" function, meaning they reach other professionals and laypersons other than the child's parents, making their influence long-lasting. The article's overall aim is to demonstrate how professional knowledge is closely intertwined with parental knowledge, or parents' unique "intimate expertise" (Lilley, 2011) in the written accounts making up the assessment reports, as professionals attempt to account for and establish an ASD diagnosis for a specific child. We conclude by arguing that such intertwined knowledge can be understood as materialization and an empirical demonstration of the network of autism expertise (Eyal, 2013), replacing previous historical forms of the appropriation of parental knowledge by professional actors during the procedure of ASD diagnosis in children (Eyal et al., 2010: 177).
