  • Physical and radiopaque characterisation of acrylic bone cements containing an organobismuth compound as a radiopacifier
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Transactions - 7th World Biomaterials Congress. - 1877040193 ; , s. 1459-1459
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The water sorption and desorption characteristics of triphenyl bismuth (TPB)-cements were studied. The radiopacity of TPB was evaluated in order to assess its contrast in comparison to BaSO4-containing cements. It was observed that TPB-cements absorb/ desorp less water than BaSO4 cements (BS) due to the hydrophobic nature of TPB. It was shown that the addition of TPB to acrylic cements results in the formation of homogeneous system as a result of its solubility in MMA.

  • Static mechanical properties of acrylic bone cements containing an organobismuth compound as a radiopacifier
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Transactions - 7th World Biomaterials Congress. - 1877040193 ; , s. 1461-1461
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The inclusion of triphenyl bismuth (TPB) as an alternative radiopacifier in bone cements with good tensile properties was reported. Using Servohydraulic Testing Machine in accordance with ISO 5833 standard using cylindrical specimens where the ratio of the length to the diameter is 2:1, the compression testing was performed. It was observed that the addition of TPB does not degrade the flexural or compressive strengths of acrylic cements. It was shown that the ultimate compressive strengths of TPB-cements exceeded the minimum value of 70 MPa stated by ISO 5833 fro acrylic cements.

  • Production methodology and reactivity of silica substituted a phase tricalcium phosphate
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Transactions - 7th World Biomaterials Congress. - 1877040193 ; , s. 1437-1437
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A silica substituted alpha phase tricalcium phosphate was developed by way of solid state reaction. The difference in reactivity of two different production methods using isothermal calorimetry and X- ray diffraction was also recorded. It was suggested that a silica substituted alpha phase tricalcium phosphate can be produced and characterized by way of X-ray measurement. Referencing selected significant peaks for α-TCP, β-TCP and apatite.

  • Preparation and study of the reactivity of Sr-substituted alpha tricalcium phosphates
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Transactions - 7th World Biomaterials Congress. - 1877040193 ; , s. 1438-1438
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The substitution in varying amounts of strontium (Sr) for calcium in the alpha tricalcium phosphate (α TCP) structure was investigated. The effects on the reactivity towards the formation of hydroxypalatite on hydration were also studied. The prepared α-TCP and the fully hydrated α-TCP powders were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction and the CuKα1 radiation. It was found that the alpha form of Sr-substituted TCP could be prepared by rapid quenching in air and the reactivity of the Sr-substituted TCPs with water was also found to be lowered with increasing Sr amounts.

  • Mechanical properties of an acrylic bone cement with a monomer soluble contrast media
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Transactions - 7th World Biomaterials Congress. - 1877040193 ; , s. 1471-1471
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The tensile and compressive properties of acrylic bone cement containing iohexol acetate (IHA) were investigated. The IHA monomer was prepared with 4 g of IHA dissolved in 20 ml of palacos monomer, later mixed with 36 g of palacos powder. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and ultimate tensile strain of IHA cement was compared with Palacos R. The IHA cement show significantly higher UTS and ultimate strain than Palacos R. It was shown that the iohexol acetate is a potential bone cement contrast media having higher tensile properties than Palacos R and similar compressive properties.

  • Investigation of electrochemical behavior of nanostructured carbon for stimulation/sensing electrode material
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Transactions - 7th World Biomaterials Congress. - 1877040193 - 9781877040191
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of nanostructured carbon and porosity on the interfacial processes was investigated. Fast cyclic voltammetry (CV) with a large number of cycles was performed at different sweep rates to elucidate interfacial processes occurring at different time scales. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was performed both before and after the CV experiments of the material. The CV curves show linear current-potential relationship at high sweep rates, which indicates a distributed resistance and capacitance in response to fast charging and discharging due to porous structure.

  • Bone integration of an injectable calcium phosphate based bone substitute
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Transactions - 7th World Biomaterials Congress. - 1877040193 ; , s. 276-276
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The bone formation and bone integration in calcium phosphate (CaP) and CaP with 20% calcium sulfate (CaS) were investigated. In the study, six adult, loop-eared rabbits were used and bone harvest chambers were implanted bilaterally in the proximal tibiae. It was found that the front of bone formation follows closely the front of material resorption without interposition of fibrous tissue. The results implied that a mixture of CaP and CaS can be introduced as an injectable bone graft substitute for filling bone defects.
