  • Immigrant Film Co-Operatives in Sweden - The Most Typical Avant-Garde
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: A Cultural History of the Avant-Garde in the Nordic Countries Since 1975. - Leiden : BRILL. - 1879-6419. - 9789004444560 - 9789004515956 ; 41, s. 703-714
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The subtitle of this essay echoes the title of David E. James’s book The Most Typical Avant-Garde, which makes the claim that the various minor cinemas of Los Angeles (amateur, immigrant, artists’ etc.) constitute the most distinctive avant-garde “on behalf of cultural practices that are commonly supposed not to even have existed”. The heterogeneous Swedish avant-garde scene has definitely been conditioned by migrational and transnational practices; however, this essay deals with a specific forgotten aspect of Swedish avant-garde film history: the immigrant film-makers and their co-operatives and organisations. Our aim is to show that they have existed and why they should be considered as part of “the most typical avant-garde”. We focus on the description and analysis of three films by three different organisations that became cohorts of multilingual and collective film-making, ranging from purely organisational structures (Kaleidoscope, in the 1980s) to collective youth recreation work in the suburbs (Tensta filmförening, in the 1970s and 1980s) and to a co-op for self-organised and self-financed film-making (Cineco, in the late 1970s and early 1980s).

  • Beyond the Borders : Elgaland-Vargaland and Association for Temporary Art
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: A cultural history of the avant-garde in the Nordic countries since 1975. - Leiden : Brill Academic Publishers. - 9789004444560 - 9789004515956 ; , s. 674-688
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This text discusses two Swedish art project/art groups: The Kingdoms of Elgaland-Vargaland, founded in 1992 by artists Leif Elggren (born 1950) and Carl Michael von Hausswolff (born 1956), and Association for Temporary Art [a:t], founded in 1993 by artists Karin Hansson (born 1967) and Åsa Andersson-Broms (then Åsa Andersson, born 1967). The Kingdoms of Elgaland Vargaland (which is a still on-going project) and [a:t] are highly relevant for an understanding of how artists during the 1990’s formed groups and contexts that balanced regular art exhibitions finding other sites for exposing and executing art projects, be it within the framework of corporate business, the Internet or by empowering the “citizens” of a Dual-Kingdom to conduct art works of their own. As this comparison will show, the paths chosen by the younger female artists and the older, more established males both run parallel and divert, and both could be understood as taking on a more vanguard position, deploying traditional avant-garde strategies of existing outside the art world. And yet, forming art groups could also be understood as an attempt to formulate an avantgarde position outside the logic that positions the rule-breaking individual avant-gardist artist and the solo exhibition at the core of an art system that builds careers and keeps the economy running.  Indeed, the relationship between the art market and the “new economy” was, as we shall see, one of the things that [a:t] set out to investigate.

  • Specialists in Revolt : The Surrealist Group of Stockholm
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: A Cultural History of the Avant-Garde in the Nordic Countries Since 1975. - Leiden : Brill Academic Publishers. - 9789004444560 - 9789004515956 ; , s. 715-728
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Surrealist Group of Stockholm was formed in 1986. Following upon earlier surrealist initiatives in Sweden, the Stockholm group launched into a period of unprecedentedly intense surrealist activity. This essay delineates the group’s inception and international collaborations, before proceeding to focus more specifically on its ambitious publishing programme up to the year 2000. Under the Surrealistförlaget imprint the group published numerous books and pamphlets, including translations of surrealist source texts as well as volumes of prose, poetry and theoretical works. They also published several different journals in varying formats and featuring a slew of international contributors, including Kvicksand, Kalla handen and Stora saltet. Politically radical from the outset, the Surrealist Group of Stockholm deliberately kept their distance from the cultural establishment until the second half of the 1990s, before entering a phase of occultation around the turn of the millennium.

  • The Avant-Garde and the Computer Industry : Art and Technology Collaborations at Datasaab and IBM Sweden from the late 1960s to the 1990s
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: A Cultural History of the Avant-Garde in the Nordic Countries Since 1975. - Leiden; Boston : Brill Academic Publishers. - 9789004444560 - 9789004515956 ; , s. 150-167
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This essay explores collaborations between art and technology at the Swedish computer manufacturer Datasaab and at IBMSweden between the late 1960s and the end of the 1990s. It describes the collaborations between the computer art pioneer Lars-Gunnar Bodin and the computer programmer Göran Sundqvist, between the computer art pioneer Jan W. Morthenson and Göran Sundqvist, and the collaboration between the computer art pioneer Sture Johannesson and the computer expert Sten Kallin, examining how these collaborative projects contribute to the understanding of Bodin, Morthenson and Johannesson as avant-garde artists. The interest in the emerging computer technology expressed by the artists fits well into their general art practice and thus played an important part in defining them as belonging to an avant-garde. Given the limited access to computers during this era, Bodin, Morthenson and Johannesson needed to collaborate with computer experts.

  • Avant-Garde Anomalies and Transnational Trajectories : The Place and Time of Gunvor Nelson’s Collage Films of the 1980s
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: A Cultural History of the Avant-Garde in the Nordic Countries Since 1975. - Leiden : Brill Academic Publishers. - 9789004444560 - 9789004515956 ; , s. 190-196
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This essay is a presentation and study of the Swedish-American avant-garde film-maker Gunvor Nelson’s remarkable production of five diverse animation films from the years 1983 to 1990. The films were produced during the final breakthrough of video art and the decline of American avant-garde film. At the time Nelson was an American citizen, but most of her actual work on the films took place in her native country, Sweden. Nevertheless, the primary culture and context of the work was the United States. The essay claims that Nelson’s collage films of the 1980s challenge not only some principles of avant-garde film but also the status of the avant-garde film institution as the films coincide with the transformation of avant-garde film into video art and thus the emergence of a new institutional apparatus. The significance of her films as avant-garde acts lies in their status as film-based media and their transgressive aesthetics. Thus they challenge an art world marked by the commercialisation of digital video.

  • Modelling of plasticity and damage in a polycrystalline microstructure
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Plasticity. - 0749-6419 .- 1879-2154. ; 11:8, s. 949-970
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The mesomechanical behavior of a polycrystalline microstructure subjected to monotonic and cyclic loadings is investigated. The analysis is based on a Voronoi polygonization strategy for generation of grains embedded in a contiguous matrix. The main emphasis is to investigate the interaction between the microconstituents and the failure processes along grain boundaries. A rational interface theory based on damage development coupled to inelastic slip and dilatation is developed. The theory uses the interface width as a constitutive parameter, which regularizes the theory of LEMAITRE [1992], that is restricted to perfect bond between grain and matrix. In a series of FE-analyses parameter variations were performed: The unit cell size (as compared to the average grain diameter), the grain-matrix area ratio, the interface width and constitutive parameters. It appears that the composite behavior can be designed as brittle or ductile solely depending on the strength and rate of damage development in the interfaces. A localization band was detected, and its orientation is in the range that is predicted within continuum theory.

  • High strain-rate tensile testing and viscoplastic parameter identification using microscopic high-speed photography
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: International journal of plasticity. - 0749-6419 .- 1879-2154. ; 20:4-5, s. 561-575
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A combined experimental/numerical method for determination of constitutive parameters in high strain-rate material models is presented. Impact loading, using moderate projectile velocities in combination with small specimens (sub mm) facilitate tensional strain rates in the order of 104-105 s-1. Loading force is measured from one-dimensional wave propagation in a rod using strain gauges and deformation is monitored with a high-speed camera equipped with a microscope lens. A sequence of digital photographs is taken during the impact loading and the plastic deformation history of the specimen is quantified from the photographic record. Estimation of material parameters is performed through so called inverse modelling in which results from repeated FE-simulations are compared with experimental results and a best choice of constitutive parameters is extracted through an iterative optimisation procedure using the simplex method. Results are presented from a preliminary tension test of a mild steel (A533B) at a strain rate well over 104 s-1. The sensitivity of the evaluated material parameters to errors in measured quantities is studied. The method, especially the optical technique for measurement of deformation will be further developed.

  • Dislocation density based model for plastic deformation and globularization of Ti-6Al-4V
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International journal of plasticity. - : Elsevier BV. - 0749-6419 .- 1879-2154. ; 50, s. 94-108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although Ti-6Al-4V has numerous salient properties, its usage for certain applications is limited due to the challenges faced during manufacturing. Understanding the dominant deformation mechanisms and numerically modeling the process is the key to overcoming this hurdle. This paper investigates plastic deformation of the alloy at strain rates from 0.001s−1 to 1s−1 and temperatures between 20° C and 1100° C. Pertinent deformation mechanisms of the material when subjected to thermo-mechanical processing are discussed. A physically founded constitutive model based on the evolution of immobile dislocation density and excess vacancy concentration is developed. Parameters of the model are obtained by calibration using isothermal compression tests. This model is capable of describing plastic flow of the alloy in a wide range of temperature and strain rates by including the dominant deformation mechanisms like dislocation pile-up, dislocation glide, thermally activated dislocation climb, globularization, etc. The phenomena of flow softening and stress relaxation, crucial for the simulation of hot forming and heat treatment of Ti-6Al-4V, can also be accurately reproduced using this model.

  • Physically Based Constitutive Model of Ti-6Al-4V for Arbitrary Phase Composition
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International journal of plasticity. - 0749-6419 .- 1879-2154.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The principal challenge in producing aerospace components using Ti-6Al-4V alloy is to employ the optimum process window of deformation rate and temperature to achieve desired material properties. Qualitatively understanding the microstructure-property relationship is not enough to accomplish this goal. Developing advanced material models to be used in manufacturing process simulation is the key to compute and optimize the process iteratively. The focus in this work is on physically based flow stress models coupled with microstructure evolution models. Such a model can be used to simulate processes involving complex and cyclic thermo-mechanical loading.
