  • Gambling-related employee embezzlement: A study of Swedish newspaper reports
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Gambling Issues. - : Concurrent Disorders Society Press. - 1910-7595. ; 34, s. 12-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is well-known that severe problem gambling may lead to economic crime. This study explored a particular type of such criminality: embezzlement committed by problem gamblers in the workplace. The aim was to gain knowledge about the extent of such criminality in Sweden and the sums of money involved. The method used was a media study of newspaper reports, complemented with information about help-seeking problem gamblers obtained in interviews with therapists specializing in problem gambling and with peer counsellors in mutual support societies of problem gamblers. The results showed that gambling-related embezzlement occurs in all branches of the economy where employees have access to money. The sums embezzled can be huge and the crimes sustained over several years. However, this varies across professional categories, with bank managers embezzling larger sums of money than others, and for longer, before being detected. Although Swedish newspapers report on average about one case a month of gambling-related employee embezzlement, the true prevalence is likely to be at least 10 times higher. More efforts should be made to prevent embezzlement and other gambling-related harms in the workplace.

  • Understanding the Emotions of Those With a Gambling Disorder : Insights From Automated Text Analysis
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Gambling Issues. - : Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. - 1910-7595. ; 47, s. 121-142
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The diffusion and growth of the web and the social media applications that it has provided have seen people increasingly turn to social media to express their feelings, frustrations, and ambitions and to generally share life events. Like other internet users, those with a gambling disorder are also known to use specialized online forums to read the experiences articulated by others and to open up, share, and express themselves online. In this study, we examined how those with a gambling disorder talk about their emotions and express sentiment through their online comments. Sentiment Analysis in IBM Watson was used to capture expressed emotions (anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, and surprise) and sentiments. These data were then used as input to a latent class cluster modelling procedure aimed at categorizing those with a gambling disorder into distinct groups. The findings show how qualitative online data can be transformed into quantitative insights in order to identify different categories of people with a gambling disorder. The technique offers a non-intrusive method of data collection that can provide useful insights into the emotions felt and expressed by those with a gambling disorder.

  • Gambling problems as a political framing : Safeguarding the monopolies in Finland and Sweden
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Gambling Issues. - : Concurrent Disorders Society Press. - 1910-7595. ; :26, s. 110-125
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ManyEUmember states are currently rethinking their gambling laws and policies to adapt toEuropean lawand to take into account increased technological possibilities for the gamblingindustry and increased competition on national gambling markets. Some of the countrieshave responded to the newsituation by giving up or remarkablyweakening theirmonopolies, but other countries have, on the contrary, reformed their monopoly systems to strengthenthem to meet the new challenges. This article analyses gambling policy reforms in Finlandand Sweden, where the liberalisation trend has been contested to safeguard the monopolysystems. The main means have been an increased focus on gambling-related problems andemphasis on the responsible nature and particular capability of monopoly-based systemsto tackle these problems. This has made it possible not only to keep the monopoly systemintact but also to expand its field of activities to the Internet as a responsible measure.

  • Nordic gambling markets and the possibilities for state-level control
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Gambling Issues. - : Concurrent Disorders Society Press. - 1910-7595. ; :18, s. 9-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gambling has gone through considerable changes during recent decades with new forms of gambling, increased turnover, and increasingly extensive marketing of different modes of gambling. At the same time, the monopolistic structure of state-controlled gambling has been questioned by media and private actors on national and European Union (EU) levels. The focus has increasingly ended up on legal interpretations of the possibilities of and the obstacles for state regulation, which has recently placed Nordic gambling monopolies under scrutiny. The purpose of this article is to clarify the legal arrangements for gambling in the Nordic countries and also how the different countries have chosen to react to increased pressure for deregulation of this area. The article describes how gambling is regulated in the five different countries and analyses what parts of the legal framework of the EU are a threat to the existing gambling systems in these countries.

  • GamTest : Psychometric Evaluation in a Low-Gambling General Population
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Gambling Issues. - Toronto : Concurrent Disorders Society Press. - 1910-7595. ; 44, s. 77-102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Instruments that investigate different aspects of gambling activities are needed to distinguish negative consequences. Because gambling is a complex activity that occurs both offline and online, different questionnaires are necessary for screening and risk classification. GamTest, an instrument used by several gambling companies, was designed to cover different aspects of gambling: money and time spent, as well as social, financial, and emotional consequences. This study explores GamTest’s psychometric properties in a general population. A total of 2,234 Swedish respondents completed an online survey containing demographic questions, the questionnaire (GamTest), and the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI). A confirmatory factor analysis was performed and GamTest’s reliability and validity tested. The confirmatory factor analysis yielded an inclusive fit. The internal consistency (omega) for the five factors was high (.79–.91), indicating good reliability, and a high positive correlation with the PGSI supported the validity of the GamTest. The inclusive fit of the confirmatory factor analysis can be explained by the low endorsement of negative consequences of gambling in the sample. However, GamTest seems to have good reliability and validity. The utility of GamTest is discussed in relation to its psychometric properties and its use in the responsible gambling tool Playscan.

  • Problem gambling, risk behaviours, and mental health in adolescence : A person oriented study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Gambling Issues. - : Journal of Gambling Issues. - 1910-7595. ; 49, s. 90-107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adolescent gambling is becoming a public health problem. While comorbidities with other externalizing behaviours have been ascertained, few studies focus on adolescents with a multi-problem behaviour pattern, i.e., alcohol and tobacco use, in addition to antisocial behaviour, which includes problem gambling. The purpose of this study was to identify adolescents with multi-problem behaviours, i.e., alcohol abuse, daily smoking, antisocial behaviour, and problem gambling and to investigate the differences in relation to gender. Unlike most studies on this topic, we adopted a person-oriented approach to identify groups of adolescent boys and girls who reported multi-problem risk behaviours, i.e., alcohol abuse, daily smoking, antisocial behaviour, and problem gambling. Moreover, we explored to what extent these adolescents exhibited mental health problems, i.e., depressive, psychosomatic, and ADHD symptoms, as well as sleep problems. The sample consisted of 1,526 adolescents from two age cohorts, 15- to 16-year-olds (n = 711, 47%) and 17- to 18-year-olds (n = 815, 53%). Latent Variable Mixture Modeling (LVMM) revealed one group with low rates of all risk behaviours and three groups with multi-problem behaviours. Among the latter three groups, two reported problem gambling and had higher levels of mental health problems. These results suggest that gambling can be added to the constellation of risk behaviours in adolescence and might be more associated with mental health problems than other externalizing behaviours.

  • Sports News And Stories In The Service Of Gamblification : The Finnish State-Owned Gambling Monopoly's Sports-Related Social Media Posts
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Gambling Issues. - : University of Helsinki. - 1910-7595. ; :53, s. 20-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gamblification refers to the gambling industry's aspirations to normalize gambling through hybrids of gambling and non-gambling contexts, most commonly sports. While research has widely shown that betting, sponsorships, and marketing gimmicks contribute to the normalization of gambling, we lack knowledge on how sports news production and journalistic storytelling pursue the same objective. This study provides insight into the ways in which Veikkaus, the Finnish state-owned gambling monopoly, utilizes sports news and stories in its social media communication. We sampled Veikkaus's sports-related social media posts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube in 2018-2020 and analysed the ways in which the content is framed to serve the Finnish public through an alignment between Veikkaus and the world of sports. Our study shows that the company takes on three communicative roles in order to claim, acquire, and justify its relevance: a news agency, a producer of high-quality journalistic storytelling, and an engager of people. In these roles, Veikkaus is pursuing the function of sports media, while simultaneously being Finland's only legal gambling provider. This societal dual role needs to be problematized, not least because it relies on the revenues of citizens' gambling.

  • Gambling During the COVID-19 Pandemic : Experiences of Risks and Change Among Finnish Gamblers
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Gambling Issues. - : Concurrent Disorders Society Press. - 1910-7595. ; 49, s. 237-249
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This brief report presents results on how gamblers have experienced risks and change during the exceptional situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The study is based on online questionnaires collected by the University of Helsinki and the Finnish Association for Substance Use Prevention (N = 586). Results show that the reduced availability of gambling in the Finnish context has limited its total consumption. The risk of gambling-related harms has therefore become less pressing during the pandemic. Although gambling is a public health risk in addition to being a harmful activity for the individual, the policy measures during the pandemic have revealed that, at a societal level, the risk of infection with COVID-19 was perceived as being a more serious problem than was the risk of gambling harms.

  • Effects of a workplace prevention program for problem gambling : A cluster-randomized controlled trial
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Gambling Issues. - : Concurrent Disorders Society Press. - 1910-7595. ; 50, s. 73-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and Aims: This study evaluated whether a preventive intervention program for problem gambling would increase managers’ inclination to act when concerned about gambling in the workplace. Design: Cluster- randomized controlled trial. Ten workplaces were randomized to either intervention or control condition. Participants: At the 12-month endpoint, there were n = 136 managers and n = 1594 subordinates in the intervention group, and n = 137 managers and n = 1150 subordinates in the waitlist group. Intervention: The intervention consisted of (1) six hours of skill-development training for managers regarding gambling, problem gambling, gaming, and harmful use of psychoactive drugs, and (2) six to eight hours of assistance in developing or improving workplace gambling policy. Measurements: The primary outcome was the managers’ self-rated (on a 1 to 10 scale) inclination to act when concerned about an employee’s problem gambling 12 months after baseline. Findings: The between-group difference in the managers’ inclination for the full intervention group (M = 8) and the control group (M = 7.4) was not significant at the 12-month follow-up, but it was when only including managers who attended the skill- development training (M = 8.2), d = 0.31, p = .04. Conclusion: A workplace prevention program aimed to increase managers’ inclination to act when they are concerned regarding an employee’s gambling resulted in statistically significant changes for those who attended training, but not for the whole intervention group when non-attendees were included.
