  • Environmental Concern Behaviours in Africa: An Exploratory Study
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Management and Sustainability. - : Canadian Center of Science and Education. - 1925-4725 .- 1925-4733. ; 2:2, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Environmental concern, including environmental behaviour continues to receive attention in both the public media and academic research. The purpose of the paper is to investigate environmental behaviour (both purchasing and non-purchasing behaviour) in an African context. Use was made of a quantitative study among a convenience sample of selected African residents. Statements reflecting non-purchasing indicated lower mean scores when compared to the purchasing behaviour statements. Statistically significant differences were found between the age groups with respect to both purchasing and non-purchasing behaviour as well as between the nationalities with regard to their purchasing behaviour. The findings have the potential of impacting the strategies of organisations operating on the continent. The major contribution of this paper is that is provides insight in the behavioural aspects as seen in an African context, and consequently provides detail on both purchasing and non-purchasing behaviour and the role of marketing aspects (such as price) in purchase behaviour.

  • Green Attraction : Transnational M unicipal Climate Networks and Green City Branding
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Management and Sustainability. - : Canadian Center of Science and Education. - 1925-4725 .- 1925-4733. ; 5:4, s. 1-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we investigate the nexus of green city branding and municipal climate networks. In recent decades, a number of formal transnational municipal climate networks have emerged and their membership continues to increase. In parallel, city branding that is based on green policies, has gained importance. Based on quantitative and qualitative data, we assess how and to what extent German cities use their membership in transnational municipal climate networks to communicate green city brands. In contrast to our expectations, we encountered very few indications of green city branding efforts by German cities. Our analysis shows that in general, branding considerations only play a negligible role in the involvement of cities in transnational municipal climate networks or climate policies. Instead, it seems that German cities use their membership in climate networks, to genuinely improve local climate change strate gies. We therefore suggest that research on green city branding should be more sensitive to the particular context of cities and efforts should be made to unveil the underlying motives for the communication of green policies.

  • The Role of Trans-Disciplinary Research in Sustainable Renovation
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Management and Sustainability. - : Canadian Center of Science and Education. - 1925-4725 .- 1925-4733. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper discusses the role of trans-disciplinary research networks tackling the challenges of sustainablerenovation such as; environmental impact of substitute building materials and waste, relocation of tenants, lackof skilled labor, rent increase due to high renovation costs, and provides a detailed perspective on the effects interms of both new forms of collaboration and research results obtained by the researchers and practitionerswithin the network. The research network Sustainable Integrated Renovation SIRen has become a platform forresearchers and actors such as building owners, housing companies, facility managers, contractors, consultants, architects, building conservationists, authorities and tenants’ organisations to meet and work together ontechnical, environmental, economic, social and cultural historical aspects on renovation of buildings, as well asto identify and discuss new challenges. A multi-aspect process covering all aspects that must be considered bythe various actors during different stages of the renovation process has been developed and implemented in four‘Living Labs’ in real renovation projects. This involved using new modes of work in early stages to place thefocus on sustainability aspects and work on new dialogue methods and using methods to evaluate the variousrenovation options based on technical, environmental, economic, social and cultural historical perspectives.

  • Using activity analysis to identify individual and group behavioral constraints to organizational change management
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Management and Sustainability. - : Canadian Center of Science and Education. - 1925-4725 .- 1925-4733. ; 1:1, s. 111-123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article looks at the constraining influence of internal organizational factors on the management of organizational change. The purpose of the study was to determine the individual and group behavioral-induced situational problems, conflicts and tensions that change managers can identify and also use as innovative tools to enhance their capacity to manage organizational change. Individual and group behavioral factors that constrained the implementation and internalization of a best management practice model in an organization were examined. It is argued that in the organizational change process, the inability of change managers to simultaneously identify the development of situational problems, such as conflicts and tensions induced by individual and group basedbehaviours, and exploiting them as tools to enhance management innovation, is a significant constraint. It is concluded that; by continuously examining individual and group based mediated actions, managers can understand, identify, isolate and manage situational problems in future implementation and internalization of new practices models in their organizations

  • Sensemaking Corporate Social Responsibility, Reflexive Organisational Change and Moral Transpose, the Case of Volkswagen ‘Diesel Dupe’ Crisis
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Management and Sustainability. - : Canadian Center of Science and Education. - 1925-4725 .- 1925-4733. ; 10:1, s. 66-82
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The world has witnessed corporate scandals of monstrosity magnitude. The Enron Scandal, the Nike Sweatshop scandal and the recent Johnson and Johnson baby talc in 2018 are some dishonors that reshaped the business world and reinvigorated the importance of business ethics. Indeed, supranational and national movements such as the Global Reporting Initiatives have responded to these scandals by imposing stricter corporate reporting to instill greater transparency and corporate responsibility. Ironically, despite unwavering efforts, corporations are still blatantly flouting regulations. The Volkswagen “diesel dupe” crisis is a stark reminder of the inherent weakness of current regulations. Despite Volkswagen’s staunch adherence to those stringent reporting guidelines, they breached ethics to the core, creating a tsunami of vehicle recalls, massive social, political and legal repercussions. Volkswagen’s cheat device is a ‘creative destruction’ that challenged the fundamental usefulness of corporate reporting. Corporate social responsibility has evolved tremendously, now taking the form of positivistic reporting patterns. Corporations are measured by their ecological, social and economic performance where they flamboyantly table those data and information to garner stakeholders’ support and legitimacy. However, a pragmatic approach towards corporate social responsibility is self-defeating. It erodes and dilutes a corporation’s ability to make sense, communicate and adapt to their externalities. Instead, corporations boast of their corporate prowess and triple bottom line. Using Volkswagen as a subject, this paper exposes the inherent weaknesses of a positivistic corporate reporting approach to social responsibility. A positivistic approach such as this cannot engender a truthful, honest and open posture in business corporations. Instead, this paper exemplifies that a meaningful sensemaking corporate social responsibility instills reflexive organisation change and moral transpose within corporations. This paper underlines this reflexive organisational change and moral transpose in Volkswagen as they encounter the diesel crisis. This study is novel and greatly enhances previous literatures in corporate social responsibility by instilling an appropriate model to underline these momentous reflexive organisational changes and moral transformations in Volkswagen

  • The Future Gap : exploring a critical reflective stakeholder approach
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Management and Sustainability. - : Canadian Center of Science and Education. - 1925-4725 .- 1925-4733. ; 1:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The focus of this paper is a participatory design process that is used as a means to enable multiple stakeholders' collaboration in discussing strategies, designs and solutions of a conceptual future factory. The reason for this study is the Swedish industrial sector's difficulty in attracting women and young people. The design process can adapt to various complexities, building on the creative and innovative ability of collaborating people. In the present study, young people participated in explorations of images and perceptions of the current industrial sector and in an inquiry into the needs and preferences of a future factory. This activity resulted in two future scenarios: utopia, a positive future vision, and dystopia, a pessimistic outlook. These scenarios subsequently were used as means for critical reflection with multiple industrial sector stakeholders, exploring the future gap as the discrepancy between the images, perceptions and understanding held by internal stakeholders compared to external stakeholders. In this paper, we propose scenario-based design as one approach to multi-stakeholder activities, both for understanding various stakeholder needs and preferences and for critical reflection on future strategies and visions with a diversity of stakeholders. We believe there is a need for a transformation in the way in which organisations involve and connect to stakeholders.
