  • Online Sex Shops : Purchasing Sexual Merchandise on the Internet
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sexual Health. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1931-7611 .- 1931-762X. ; 23:2, s. 102-110
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of those who purchase sexual merchandise on the Internet, what merchandise they purchase, and the reason they use the Internet for this purpose. Data were collected through a Web questionnaire. Approximately 30% of the 1,614 respondents who reported to use the Internet for sexual purposes had purchased sexual merchandise online. The results suggested those who purchased sexual merchandise were older adults and in relationships. In addition, they had a relatively high level of sexual activity. Vibrators/dildos were the most popular items, and the primary reason given for making the purchase online was convenience.

  • Vulvovaginal pain from a fear-avoidance perspective : a prospective study among female university students in Sweden
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sexual Health. - : Routledge. - 1931-7611 .- 1931-762X. ; 30:1, s. 49-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: To examine how fear-avoidance influences vulvovaginal pain and sexual function over time.Method: At baseline and at 10-month follow-up, self-report measures for sexual- and fear avoidance factors were obtained from 483 female university students with and without self-reported vulvovaginal pain. Results: Individuals with pain at both times reported lower sexual function, and higher levels of fear-avoidance compared to the pain-free group. Fear-avoidance beliefs predicted the occurrence of vulvovaginal pain at follow up and the level of pain intensity. Conclusion: The results points to the relevance of the components of the fear-avoidance model in vulvovaginal pain over time.

  • Psychosocial Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic and Mental Health Among LGBTQ plus Young Adults : A Cross-Cultural Comparison Across Six Nations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sexual Health. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1931-7611 .- 1931-762X. ; 34:Suppl. 1, s. 105-105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Across the world, people have seen their lives interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Using an online survey, we explored how the psychosocial effects of the pandemic affected the mental health of LGBTQþ young adults who were confined with their parents during the lockdown period (N ¼ 1,934), from six countries: Portugal, UK, Italy, Brazil, Chile, and Sweden.South American participants experienced more negative psychosocial effects of the pandemic. Depression and anxiety were higher among participants who were younger, not working, living in Europe and who reported feeling more emotionally affected by the pandemic, uncomfortable at home, or isolated from non-LGBTQ friends. Not attending higher education predicted depression while not being totally confined at home, residing habitually with parents, and fearing more future infec-tion predicted anxiety. LGBTQþ community groups, as well as health and educational services should remain particularly attentive to the needs of LGBTQþ young adults during health crises.Conflict of Interest and Disclosure Statement: No conflict of interest

  • When sex is hardly about mutual pleasure : Dominant and resistant discourses on sexuality and its consequences for young people's sexual health
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sexual Health. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1931-7611 .- 1931-762X. ; 24:4, s. 303-317
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores gendered discourses about sexuality in Ecuador, the consequences of these discourses for young people's sexual health, and the possibility of the emergence of resistance and challenge. We analyzed and compared individual interviews and focus-group discussions with: young women, youth service providers, ordinary young men, and activist young men. Five interpretative repertoires emerged: (1) becoming sexually respectable women, (2) policing young women's sexuality, (3) men threatening and protecting women, (4) sexual relations (abusing, fooling, or seducing?), and (5) emerging resistance. The repertoires constructed a hierarchy of sexualities in which heterosexual monogamous lifelong coupledom was normative and women's pleasure was absent, but resistance was emerging.

  • The Management of Unwanted Pregnancy Among Women in Nairobi, Kenya
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sexual Health. - : Routledge. - 1931-7611 .- 1931-762X. ; 26:2, s. 100-112
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: This study probed both the meanings women ascribe to their unwanted pregnancies and the drivers of their choices in relation to the management of such pregnancies. Methods: Cross-sectional qualitative in-depth individual interviews were conducted with 80 women and girls in Nairobi, Kenya. Results: Gender, livelihoods, morality, marital status, and male partners exerted extensively complex and multidimensional influence on women's management of their unintentional pregnancies. For instance, although gender norms were frequently invoked to justify terminating unwanted pregnancies, they also regularly provided strong motivations for carrying such pregnancies to term. Conclusions: Urgently needed are programs and policies that support women to avoid unwanted pregnancies and help them respond safely and pragmatically to such pregnancies when they occur. © 2014 Copyright Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

  • Swedish Gynecologists’ Positioning in Relation to Clitoral Reconstruction After Female Genital Cutting. A Qualitative Interview Study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sexual Health. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1931-7611 .- 1931-762X. ; 33, s. 76-87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Clitoral reconstruction (CR) is surgical reparation of the clitoris cut as part of the practice of female genital cutting (FGC) available in a handful of countries, including Sweden. The surgery aims at restoring the clitoris esthetically and functionally, thus has implications for sexual health. Gynaecological examinations can be an opportunity for dialogue regarding women’s sexual health. Gynecologist play a role in referring patients experiencing FGC-related problems, including sexual, to specialist services such as CR. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore how gynecologists position themselves in relation to CR. Method: Eight gynecologists were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. The interviews were tape-recorded, transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: The gynecologists positioned themselves in three different ways in relation CR; outright negative, uncertain or positive toward the surgery. Those positioning themselves as negative thought CR was a harmful fraud and denied any possible benefits, at least sufficient for referral for CR. Those positioning themselves as uncertain did not deny possible benefits, but were skeptical toward CR improving cut women’s sexual health and function. Those positioning themselves positive considered the potential physical, psychological/emotional, esthetic, or symbolic aspects of CR as important for general well-being and sexual health. Conclusion: There was a great variety in how the gynecologists positioned themselves toward CR, and many were skeptical toward the functional benefits in relation to sexual health. This is likely to diverge cut women’s access to CR surgery.

  • Being Forced to Become Your Own Doctor : Men Who Have Sex with Men's Experiences of Stigma in the Tanzanian Healthcare System
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sexual Health. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1931-7611 .- 1931-762X. ; 28:2, s. 163-175
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To acquire a deepened understanding of how stigma in healthcare affects health-seeking behaviors of same-sex practising men in Tanzania. Methods: In-depth interviews with 12 men were conducted in Dar es Salaam, 2012. Data were interpreted through qualitative content analysis. Results: Narratives revealed that men's healthcare perceptions were shaped by previous encounters, rumors in gay community, norms, and legislation around homosexuality. Fears of exposure aggravated men's possibilities of giving full anamnesis and detached them from formal healthcare services. Conclusions: Stigma in healthcare might lead to severe public health problems due to perceived exclusion from the health system by sexual minorities.

  • The Fight against Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting among the Ejaghams of Cameroon: Kinks in the Legal Approach and Implications for Public Health Practice
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sexual Health. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1931-7611 .- 1931-762X. ; 34:1, s. 160-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is one of the most prevalent harmful cultural practices against women and girls in many African countries. We identified reasons for the failure of the legal approach to stop FGC practice in the Ejagham region Southwest of Cameroon through multi-locale ethnographic fieldwork. The reasons revolve around the belief that FGM is useful for the reduction of sexual immorality among women, removal of sexual ambiguity and improving genital esthetics, a feministic symbol and cultural identity, and the government's socio-economic neglect of the Ejagham communities; the basis for resistance. Non-legal approaches involving community development and women empowerment have been proposed for fighting FGC.

  • Public knowledge and attitudes to HIV : Research from three decades in Sweden
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sexual Health. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1931-7611 .- 1931-762X. ; 29:1, s. 22-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The overarching objective of this article is to describe the Swedish public's knowledge about HIV and attitudes toward people living with HIV during the period 1987–2011. Within the framework of this objective, the article also directs a special focus at the association between knowledge about HIV transmission and attitudes toward people who are HIV positive. The study is based on the results of a questionnaire sent to a stratified random sample on eight occasions between 1987 and 2011. The study population comprises the Swedish general public aged 16–44 and is stratified on the basis of the respondents' age, with each of five age groups (16–17, 18–19, 20–24, 25–34, and 35–44) comprising 20% of the study respondents. A total of 21,027 individuals have completed the questionnaire in the eight surveys. The survey instrument is relatively short and comprises 27 questions on knowledge, attitudes and sexual behaviour relating to HIV. The eight surveys show that the public's knowledge about HIV and its different transmission routes is high and has increased over time. Above all there has been an increase in the level of knowledge about how HIV is not transmitted between people. However, the public's knowledge about the infectiousness of individuals receiving treatment for HIV infection is low. Public attitudes toward people with HIV have also undergone a clear shift over time, toward increased tolerance and a decline in the level of fear, especially in social situations. Despite this, a residual suspicion and stigmatisation can be seen in the public's attitudes to people who are HIV positive. This is most obvious from the questions that link HIV to sexuality and here the changes are very modest over time. Public knowledge about HIV and its transmission routes has increased between 1987 and 2011. Attitudes toward people who are HIV positive have generally become more tolerant and positive, not least in relation to different social situations. The fear of becoming infected has declined. At the same time there remains a stigma, which continues to direct suspicion at people who are living with HIV and to ascribe them negative characteristics and behaviors that are based on prejudice. The results show, however, that the public's attitudes toward same-sex relationships are clearly more accepting today than they were previously, and that the symbolic association between HIV and this group is tending to become weaker.
