  • Eli Heckscher’s Ideological Migration Toward Market Liberalism
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Econ Journal Watch. - 1933-527X. ; 13:1, s. 75-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For most of his life economist and economic historian Eli Heckscher was the most firmly principled economic liberal Sweden had. He fought against state-socialist tendencies, Keynesian crisis policy, and economic planning. In his younger days, however, he was a social conservative who adopted an almost state-socialist stance. This article provides an account of Heckscher’s ideology and its development, drawing on previously untranslated policy-oriented discourse and focusing on Heckscher’s movement toward market liberalism. It details Heckscher’s liberal insights in political economy and his fears of a government with unprecedented resources, the creation of a “Frankenstein’s monster.”

  • Knut Wicksell, Gustav Cassel, Eli Heckscher, Bertil Ohlin and Gunnar Myrdal on the Role of the Economist in Public Debate
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Econ Journal Watch. - 1933-527X. ; 3, s. 4-511
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Swedish public debate, economists have been more influential than any other category of social scientists. We examine the views of five great Swedish economists on the role of the university economist in the public arena. What did they say about scholarly objectivity and value judgements, about political commitment and educating the people? The five economists are Knut Wicksell, Gustav Cassel, Eli Heckscher, Bertil Ohlin and Gunnar Myrdal. Representing two generations and a broad political spectrum, they were immensely productive. They founded Sweden’s tradition of media-tuned university economists strongly involved in the current social issues. More recently, however, academic economists in Sweden have shifted away from that ideal. The future of the old heritage hangs in doubt.

  • Listen to Eva Forslund and Magnus Henrekson, Please!
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Econ Journal Watch. - : Institute of Spontaneous Order Economics. - 1933-527X. ; 19:2, s. 283-290
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • My commentary on Eva Forslund and Magnus Henrekson (2022) supports and extends their arguments. The issue is the increasing tendency of non-English institutions and individuals to use English in publishing and teaching. I elaborate on a number of problems associated with this development in terms of research problems addressed, student understanding, and collaboration with society.

  • An Economic Dream
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Econ Journal Watch. - : INST SPONTANEOUS ORDER ECONOMICS. - 1933-527X. ; 14:3, s. 488-491
  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Reproduced here is an 1847 article, in translation, the last that Erik Gustaf Geijer published during his lifetime. A Swede, Geijer-pronounced "yay-yer"-writes: "What is the new order of things? With each day, its law evolves more clearly; its substance is already so apparent that one can thereof judge its nature and the spirit of progress. This substance is the day-by-day, constantly evolving, all-encompassing fellowship and interaction of human powers and needs. This new, but actually ancient law of labour is that of intelligence, which works in expanding circles."

  • Reply to "The Limitations of Growth-Optimal Approaches to Decision Making Under Uncertainty"
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Econ Journal Watch. - : Institute of Spontaneous Order Economics. - 1933-527X. ; 20:2, s. 335-348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In an article appearing concurrently with the present one, Matthew Ford and John Kay put forward their understanding of a decision theory which emerges in ergodicity economics. Their understanding leads them to believe that ergodicity economics evades the core problem of decisions under uncertainty and operates solely in a regime where there is no measurable uncertainty. If this were the case, then the authors' critical stance would be justified and, as the authors point out, the decision theory would yield only trivial results, identical to a flavor of expected-utility theory. Here we clarify that the critique is based on a theoretical misunderstanding, and that uncertainty-quantified in any reasonable way-is large in the regime where the model operates. Our resolution explains the success of recent laboratory experiments, where ergodicity economics makes predictions different from expected-utility theory, contrary to the claim of equivalence by Ford and Kay. Also, a state of the world is identified where ergodicity economics outperforms expected-utility theory empirically.

  • Economics Doctoral Programs Still Elide Entrepreneurship
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Econ Journal Watch. - : Atlas Economic Research Foundation. - 1933-527X. ; 14:2, s. 196-217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Is entrepreneurship covered in economics doctoral programs? Updating an earlier study (Johansson 2004), we examine leading programs in the United States and Sweden by textual analysis of textbooks and assigned articles in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and industrial organization courses. We find that coverage of entrepreneurship in textbooks is scant and that theories regarding the function of the entrepreneur are hardly mentioned in assigned articles. Talk of the entrepreneur is more common in a few newer textbooks, which could indicate a renewed interest. But even textbooks that mention the entrepreneur do not define the concept or discuss the entrepreneur’s economic role in any depth; often the entrepreneur is just another optimizing agent within a model, like a borrower, manager, or investor.
