  • What do we want to know about reshoring? Towards a comprehensive framework based on a meta-synthesis
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Operations Management Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1936-9735 .- 1936-9743. ; 13:1-2, s. 53-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aims to develop a framework for reshoring research, specifying the aspects encompassing a full case description. The article reports an analysis of existing case-based research focusing on manufacturing reshoring and the previous offshoring events, with the aim to advance the knowledge within the field through an accumulation process. The selected methodology to achieve this purpose is meta-synthesis, a type of meta-analysis applied to the analysis of qualitative data. The analyzed data are retrieved from a sample of 14 articles including cases of offshoring and subsequent reshoring processes. The sample represent the total population of articles published in peer-reviewed sources. By focusing on the analysis on the article level and the findings generated by the original authors, the study allowed to build a comprehensive framework to lead future reshoring research, as well as to demonstrate the suitability of the methodology in achieving knowledge accumulation even if the articles have different characteristics in terms of theoretical perspectives, unit of analysis, number of cases and context. In doing so, this study contributes to the field of reshoring and more widely to the operations and supply chain management field. Furthermore, this research generates many practical implications, by condensing all the evidences about manufacturing reshoring so far collected in one single study, thus providing examples of challenges and best-practices.

  • From general to specialty hospitals: operationalising focus in healthcare operations
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Operations Management Research. - : Springer. - 1936-9735 .- 1936-9743.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study proposes an operationalisation of the term focus in healthcare operations. We develop a configuration model consisting of six interrelated dimensions that can be used to characterise hospital focus. The proposed dimensions of focus are Knowledge areas, Procedures, Medical conditions, Patient groups, Planning horizons and Levels of difficulty. The strength of these dimensions is shown through empirical examination, using a three-step methodology to analyse case study data from a unique transformation project where general hospitals were turned into new types of focused specialty hospitals. As our study takes a portfolio approach to the allocation of demand segments to different healthcare delivery units, it contributes to operations management knowledge with a model for segmenting healthcare demand from an operations perspective. This configuration model provides researchers and practitioners with a tool for understanding current configurations as well as for identifying potential new configurations of focus in healthcare.

  • Challenges to competitive manufacturing in high-cost environments: checklist and insights from Swedish manufacturing firms
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Operations Management Research. - : Springer Nature. - 1936-9735 .- 1936-9743.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research on competitive manufacturing (CM) in high-cost environments has earlier indicated that firms struggle to remain competitive and that manufacturing operations often have been offshored to low-cost environments. The purpose of this research is to explore and create a compounded view of challenges related to both internal and external environments of firms when operating in high-cost environments. This issue has been investigated through a qualitative case study involving five manufacturing firms in Sweden. This research has empirically derived the challenges associated with sustaining CM in high-cost environments and developed a prescriptive checklist. Seven main categories of challenges have been identified, ranging from a micro level related to product characteristics and employee involvement, to a macro level related to supply chain collaborations and industry systems. This research contributes to the existing literature on CM in high-cost locations by explaining and detailing what constitutes challenges in this kind of environment.

  • Internal and external suppliers in manufacturing networks : An empirical analysis
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Operations Management Research. - : Springer-Verlag New York. - 1936-9735 .- 1936-9743. ; 1:2, s. 141-149
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of the paper is to explore the way manufacturing firms use internal and external suppliers in the design and management of manufacturing networks. The main area of interest is to explore the similarities and differences between internal and external suppliers, with respect to their roles and the reasons for choosing a certaintype of supplier. We base our analysis on data from 104 Swedish manufacturing plants and their corresponding manufacturing networks of internal and external suppliers. The results of the study show that there are significant differences between the criteria that are influential in choosing a certain type of supplier. The choice of an internal supplier is largely based on a single corporate decision, while an external supplier has to perform well on a number of criteria (primarily quality, cost, and delivery dependability). When comparing the selection criteria withcompetitive priorities and plant performance, we find that the criteria for selecting external suppliers has a better match than those for selecting internal suppliers. The sample contained plants having only external suppliers as well as plants having both internal and external suppliers, but the selection criteria for external suppliers are the same for both groups and not dependent upon the presence or absence of internal suppliers.

  • Lessons from Sweden’s first large-scale implementation of Six Sigma in healthcare
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Operations Management Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1936-9735 .- 1936-9743. ; 3:3-4, s. 117-128
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Skaraborg Hospital Group (SkaS) has implemented a variety of quality management initiatives in the last 20 years in accordance with its strategy of excelling at quality development to fulfill the needs and expectations of its patients. One such initiative is Six Sigma, which has contributed to more than 40 completed improvement projects. Using an action research approach, this article describes the lessons that were learned from the first 22 Six Sigma projects, completed between 2006 and 2008 and having a success rate of 75%. We further describe how these insights have contributed to other ongoing quality improvement activities at SkaS. In particular, the paper presents some key points not earlier described in other Six Sigma healthcare applications.

  • Inventory control in environments with seasonal demand
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Operations Management Research. - 1936-9735 .- 1936-9743. ; 3:3-4, s. 138-145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the traditional reorder point model no consideration is taken to seasonal variations in de-mand. The purpose of this paper is to present an extended reorder point model based on an assumption of stationary demand suitable for ERP systems and capable of taking such con-siderations. The purpose is also to assess potential benefits of using the model by means of simulation and to provide some rough heuristic guidelines for the practitioner regarding when to use the model rather than the traditional one. The result from the assessment indicates that even in cases with low degree of seasonality it is of significant importance to consider sea-sonal variations when calculating the demand during lead time part of the reorder point to be able to achieve targeted service levels. Considering seasonal demand when calculating safety stocks and order quantities is basically only of significant importance in cases when the de-gree of seasonality is high.

  • Aligning Organisational Interests in Designing Rail-wagon Tracking
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Operations Management Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1936-9735 .- 1936-9743. ; 5:3-4, s. 101-115
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper investigates the design and implementation of rail-wagon tracking to align the interests of rail-track owners, rail operators and third-party logistics service providers. The investigation identifies design actions to enable beneficial uses for the different rail-wagon tracking participants in a railway logistics system. Design science is used as the overall research approach. The findings are derived in the context of three organisations involved in an automotive railway logistics system. Data on the perceptions and interests of the parties is collected using case-study methodology. Our findings indicate how rail-wagon tracking can be used to improve the efficiency of rail transport operators’ maintenance operations and potentially decrease wear and tear on rail tracks owned by the government authority. These anticipated benefits have motivated the transport authority in the case setting to make investments in more intelligent infrastructure, providing a platform for future material-flow tracking by logistics companies.
