  • Police Students' Perceptions of Intimate Partner Violence in Same-Sex Relationships
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Partner Abuse. - : Springer Publishing Company. - 1946-6560 .- 1946-6579. ; 9:2, s. 181-201
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The knowledge of same-sex intimate partner violence (IPV) is limited. This study aims to investigate the perception of seriousness of same-sex IPV. A vignette study was undertaken among 248 police students (69% males and 31% females) in Sweden. The vignettes portrayed an intimate partner relationship between two people and were available in four versions with the sex of the offender and victim being alternated. Perceptions of IPV were measured using the Opinions of Domestic Violence Scale (Ahmed et al., 2013). The results showed that regardless of gender, IPV was considered serious; however, same-sex IPV was perceived as less serious than victimization of a heterosexual female but more serious than victimization of a heterosexual male. Police interventions were found to be less needed for same-sex victims than for heterosexual female victims.

  • Is Methodological Pluralism Improving Our Ability to Uncover the Causal Mechanisms Behind Men's Violence Against Women?
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Partner Abuse. - : Springer Publishing Company. - 1946-6560 .- 1946-6579. ; 14:1, s. 59-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This explorative article aims to take a step in the direction of a realist-oriented scientific design that extends our knowledge of the requirements of a methodology that improves our ability to uncover the causal mechanisms behind men's violence against women. Despite the great advances that have been made in individual research disciplines, our understanding of the complex causes is still insufficient and suffers from our inability to grasp the larger whole of the collaborative processes. As a first step towards the objective, an integration attempt is implemented that aims to highlight methodological issues that we have to overcome to explain men’s violence against women. The integration of psychological, social-psychological, and sociological theories aims to exemplify how contributing, and counteracting factors interact with each other and form a complex mechanism that influences whether violence against women will take place or not. To leave room for the methodological dimension, the depth of each perspective has been reduced. The results of the integration attempt show both opportunities and difficulties in investigating the mechanisms behind men's violence against women. However, there is still untapped knowledge potential in the explorative integration of theories and the use of realist-oriented pluralistic research methodologies.

  • Development of the Social Acceptance of Wife Abuse Scale in Rural Bangladesh
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Partner Abuse. - : Springer. - 1946-6560 .- 1946-6579. ; 12:1, s. 21-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to develop and validate the Social Acceptance of Wife Abuse Scale (SAWAS) in a Bangladeshi context. A total of 18 initial items were generated through literature review and focus group interviews with 16 university students. After meetings with 3 experts and 4 research students having extensive fieldwork experiences on domestic violence issues in rural Bangladesh, 12 items remained. These 12 items were subjected to exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with a sample of 186 university students. This produced a 2-factor, 6-item scale. We labeled the two factors, the circumstances where wife abuse is socially accepted: “disobeying family obligations” and “challenging male-authority.” Using a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), the factor solution was further tested with another sample of 1,929 rural citizens. The SAWAS showed very good internal consistency and validity. The SAWAS can serve as a protocol to direct measures in the effective prevention of widespread wife abuse in Bangladesh.
