  • Retaining Knowledge in Smaller Building and Construction Firms
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Knowledge and Systems Science. - : IGI Global. - 1947-8208 .- 1947-8216. ; 8:3, s. 1-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to increase our understanding of how SMEs retain critical knowledge. Against the background of the underdeveloped body of knowledge regarding knowledge retention, the authors selected an explorative (qualitative) research approach. More precisely, they conducted semi-structured interviews with organization members (i.e. executive and regular staff) of five Austrian SMEs operating in the building and construction industry. This study provides fresh insights into knowledge retention in SMEs. The findings advance the limited understanding of knowledge retention in general and regarding SMEs. They also contribute to the further development of the study of knowledge management in the building and construction sector. Based on the study's findings the authors derive suitable measures to better manage the process of knowledge retention in SMEs. These measures may be useful for SMEs operating in other industries as well.

  • The role of knowledge management in industrial marketing : a longitudinal study
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International journal of knowledge and systems science. - : IGI Global. - 1947-8208 .- 1947-8216. ; 6:2, s. 16-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to examine the role that knowledge management plays in making industrial marketing sustainable. In order to examine sustainability over time, a longitudinal study has been carried out. Three multinational companies, Atlas Copco, SKF and Volvo are followed from their inception, in 1873, 1907 and 1927 to present time. Due to the long time span involved most of the empirical data collection is carried out in the form of internal and external document studies. The data is analysed using the constant comparative technique from the grounded theory approach. A framework combining knowledge management and industrial marketing is proposed. The research has interesting implications for the scientific understanding of industrial marketing, as the field of knowledge management has not been previously integrated and many aspects of marketing are knowledge driven processes. Moreover, the framework that is proposed should be useful for managers of industrial companies in their efforts of making their marketing more sustainable.

  • A Simulation-Game for Resilience Assessments in a Payment System Disruption Scenario
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Knowledge and Systems Science. - : I G I Global. - 1947-8208 .- 1947-8216. ; 13:1, s. 1-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a quantitative agent-based simulation model of the everyday payment system used to simulate the business and consumer consequences of loss of functionality, or disruptions of the payment system for the food and fuel retailing markets as well as the bank sector in order to address resilience. The simulation model is used in a gaming simulation approach that couples a role-playing game with the simulation model in order to provide crisis management team-training to decision-makers in a multi-organisational context. Drawing primarily on resilience engineering and crisis response, the concepts of core values, coping strategies, and resilience value networks were used to guide the design of the simulation model. The ultimate aim of this study is to explore the collaborative responses from the key actors during the disruption scenario in order to evoke and facilitate collective resilience.

  • Sociomaterial Practices, Relational Ontologies, and Information Technology: Gilbert Simondon's Theory of Individuation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International journal of knowledge and systems science. - : IGI Global. - 1947-8208 .- 1947-8216. ; 6:1, s. 21-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recent interest in sociomaterial practices and forms of imbrication of social and material resources in e.g., studies of the use of information technology and information systems in organizations has called for new theoretical developments to enact and fully understand materiality. This article examines the work of French philosopher Gilbert Simondon as an important, yet to date little explored resource in organization studies. Following Orlikowski's (2010) call for a relational ontology apprehending the enfolding of materiality and social resources, Simondon's analytical framework which include key concepts such as individuation, transduction and relations, is presented. The article contributes to the recent debates regarding how to theorize and examine material resources such as information and communication technologies used in organizations.

  • Knowledge Leakage when SMEs Participate in Supply Chains : What Is It About and How Can It Occur?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Knowledge and Systems Science (IJKSS). - : IGI Global. - 1947-8208. ; 7:3, s. 30-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The advantages of sharing knowledge when participating in a Supply Chain (SC) are well established in the literature, but the challenge of knowledge leakage, and how to manage it, is still in its infancy. In order to increase the understanding of knowledge leakage, when SMEs participate in SCs, this study describes types of knowledge that may leak away, how they are valued, and how knowledge leakage can occur. The result includes two frameworks that also have shown to be potentially useful for examining the maturity of a specific SME with regard to knowledge leakages when participating in the SC.

  • The Management of Knowledge Risks : What do We Really Know?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Knowledge and Systems Science. - : IGI Global. - 1947-8208. ; 7:3, s. 19-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to review extant research on knowledge risk management (KRM) to establish our body of knowledge and to identify gaps justifying further research activities. The study is based on a systematic review of peer-reviewed empirical and conceptual articles on the management of knowledge risks. This proceeding proves evidence that there are a small number of papers addressing knowledge risks and its management. The recommendations derived from the findings can assist researchers, managers and consultants to better understand the critical importance of integrating KRM in the firms’ enterprise risk management. This increased understanding can particularly be useful for managers as better decisions will be possible.
