    • This paper describes how the House of Quality matrix has been quantified for use in conceptual design. The House of Quality matrix is used for visualizing the relationships between subsystem design parameters and top-level requirements. The idea is then to insert quantified values of the subsystems’ characteristics as coupling elements, thus visualizing both the requirements-subsystems relationship and system performance. Here, a spreadsheet program (MS Excel) with a built-in modeling/solver tool has been used to model the subsystems. This makes the matrix interactive, thus facilitating trade studies between requirements and system design. By adding probabilistic analysis it is possible to explore the entire range of system behavior early on, rather than just focusing on one or more worst case scenarios as has previously often been the case, and thus promoting the selection of more optimal solutions. The quantitative approach also opens up for mathematically formal optimization which has been exploited by deriving Pareto fronts for visualization of conflicting objectives, one such objective being. The design application used as illustrative example is conceptual design of an aircraft fuel system.

  • Drag Analysis on Rocket Nose Cones for Enhanced Flight Range

    • The range is an essential parameter for the flight performance of a rocket. The rocket’s aerodynamics considerably determines the rocket range and is influenced by the design of the nose cone shape. The shape of the nose cone should be selected to achieve the desired rocket parameters. This research investigates the best nose cone that generates the farthest range for the 450 mm-caliber rocket configurations. Six nose cone shapes with the same length and diameter are considered in drag analysis for each configuration. Aerodynamic calculations and trajectory simulations are carried out for each configuration. The aerodynamic coefficients are calculated by using the Datcom method, and the trajectory simulation is carried out by using a numerical simulation of six Degrees of Freedom (6-DoF) equations of motion. The results have revealed that the rocket’s configuration using a power 0.75 nose cone is superior at supersonic speeds and has the farthest range, which is 107.84 km.

    • A vast amount of attentions has been given to permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) in a variety of automotive applications as these motors present higher efficiency, power factor and better dynamic performance than asynchronous motors without sacrificing reliability. It has also been shown that they can be operated over a wide constant power speed range (CPSR) with the field weakening capability. This paper presents a theoretical study on speed synchronized control of the PMSMs in both the constant torque and the field-weakening (or constant power) operation regions. Promising applications of this can be found in aero dynamic, naval, material processing etc., industries.
