  • Causes and consequences of dropping out from organized youth sports
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Swedish Journal of Sport Research. - 2001-6018 .- 2001-9475. ; 2:1, s. 26-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to examine dropout reasons and various types ofdropouts in relation to demographic variables, various types of sports, physicalactivity, and underlying motivational processes. Retrospective data was collected fromthree cohorts including 1,176 participants, of which 712 stated that they hadsometimes dropped out of organized sport. Findings showed that time-related reasonswere the primary causes for dropping out. It was also revealed that athletes with lowversus high levels of perceived physical competence dropped out to a higher extentbecause of experiencing too much pressure, and athletes reporting low versus highsocial competence withdrew to a higher extent because they did not like theirteammates. Results also showed that girls with a foreign background had a higher rateof dropouts compared to boys with the same background. Girls with foreignbackgrounds were also found to be less physically active after dropping out fromorganized sports.

  • Good sport environments : A study of collective fundamental values and their importance for activity principles in Swedish club sport
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Swedish Journal of Sport Research. - Lund : Svensk förening för beteende- och samhällsvetenskaplig idrottsforskning. - 2001-6018 .- 2001-9475. ; 1, s. 1-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study answers the call made by the Swedish government, the Swedish Sports Confederation (RF) and Swedish local authorities for research on success factors in Swedish club sport. By using RF ́s success concept and sport scholars critique in reverse as points of departure for our study we selected two “successful” sports clubs for a study of the constitution of good sport environments. Our theoretical starting point was that an organisation’s collective fundamental values contribute to shaping both its goals and its practice – and in extension to its potential to constitute a good sport environment. The results, which are based on eight qualitative interviews with key individuals, show how the clubs work with society-related dilemmas and sport-specific problems. By analysing elements in the club environments which have promoted this work we have been able to get an insight into the values on which these environments rest and their importance for building good sport environments.

  • Why do Wii teach physical education in school?
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Swedish Journal of Sport Research. - : Swedish Association for behacioural and social research in sport. - 2001-6018 .- 2001-9475. ; 2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Videogames including bodily movement have recently been promoted as tools to be used in school to encourage young people to be more physically active. The purpose of this systematic review has been to explore the arguments for and against using exergames in school settings and thus facilitate new insights into this field. Most of the arguments for and/or against these of exergames can be organised in relation to health and sport. In relation to health, the dominant theme is about fitness and obesity. In relation to sport, the two main themes were skill acquisition, and exergames as an alternative to traditional PE. Theidea why Wii teach PE in schools is that children are becoming more obese, which in turn threatens the health of the population. Schools seem to be an appropriate arena for this intervention, and by using exergames as an energy consuming and enjoyable physical activity a behaviour modification and the establishment of good healthy habits is argued to be achieved

  • Den professionella föreningen : en fallstudie av en idrottsförening med rötter i svensk föreningstradition
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Swedish Journal of Sport Research. - : Svensk Förening för Beteende- och Samhällsvetenskaplig Idrottsforskning. - 2001-6018 .- 2001-9475. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Participation patterns in Swedish youth sport. : A longitudinal study of participants aged 10-19 years.
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Swedish Journal of Sport Research. - : Swedish Association for Behavioural and Social Research in Sport (SVEBI). - 2001-6018 .- 2001-9475. ; 7:2, s. 25-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden almost everyone participate in youth sport at one time or another. In recent years, however, overall participation rates have declined and many stop early. The aspiration of the sport confederation as well as the Swedish state is that young people should stay longer in sport which raises questions about participation patterns during adolescence, the ease of joining a sport club, and the barriers to remaining a participant. Drawing on a nine-year longitudinal study, this article reports on the participation patterns among a group of 241 youth that were followed from 10 to 19 years. They took part in four surveys (when they were 10, 13, 16 and 19 years of age). The results show a clear polarisation, one fourth did not take part at all or had only participated for a short time, one fourth participated all the time from the age of 10 to 19. Few started after the age of 10. The pathways for those continuing were characterised by diversification and not specialisation.

  • Effects of a team building intervention on social cohesion in adolescent elite football players
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Swedish Journal of Sport Research. - Lund : Swedish Association for Behavioural and Social Research in Sport. - 2001-6018 .- 2001-9475.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study describes a team building intervention and the effects on team cohesion in adolescent elite football players. The team building group (3 teams, n = 55) attended 12 weekly 60-minute team building sessions, while the control group (3 teams, n = 57) did not. The intervention used the work of Carron and Spink (1993) and Carron, Widmeyer and Brawley (1985) to plan and conduct a practically sound and effective intervention. A Danish version of the Group Environment Questionnaire was used to measure social and task cohesion at baseline and at the end of the intervention, and qualitative interviews with the participants were conducted. Results show that the sub-variable group integration–social increased significantly from baseline to end of intervention in the intervention group compared to the control group. The qualitative analysis indicated that the intervention had an effect on the intervention group. Results are discussed regarding practical implications and research.

  • Towards a New Logic of Sport Practice for Children : A Case Study of a “Sport for All” School Programme in Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: The Swedish Journal of Sport Research. - 2001-6018. ; 1, s. 4-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to study children and engaged adults’ experiences of participating in a Sport for All Programme in school (SAP). Fifteen individual interviews were conducted with one programme manager, three schoolteachers, two sport club leaders, and nine children (five girls and four boys aged 9-10). Bourdieu’s (1990) as well as Lave and Wenger’s (1991) theoretical models were used as the analytic tools to study the SAP. The analysis reveals that the organization and the practice of the activities are noticeably related to conventionally organized sport. The analysis also shows that the SAP is a new way of organizing and practicing children’s sport – with its own logic. The absence of organized competition, the less intensive activities, the greater flexibility and variation in the SAP appear to challenge the conscious and unconscious idea of the meaning and function of competitive sport, especially in children’s sport. Thus, the SAP concept calls for a new way of approaching children’s sport, and new demands on those who organize and lead the activities.
