  • Meeting the Good Other : Proper distance and the representation of José Mujica in Swedish feature journalism
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Iberoamericana: Nordic Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. - : Stockholm University Press. - 2002-4509. ; 48:1, s. 150-160
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the representation of the then president of Uruguay, José Mujica, in a long-read feature story published in the Saturday supplement of the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter. This is done with the aim of contributing to the understanding of how international journalism constructs distance and proximity in the reporting of distant subjects, and more specifically, how such constructions connect the Swedish audience to (or disconnect it from) political processes and relations in Latin America. In this way, the study contributes to the field of media representation in general, as well as to research on the representation of Latin America, more specifically. Critical discourse analysis is used to analyze the text and visuals. Three result topics are presented. The first comprises discourses that construct difference, such as those highlighting personal characteristics that make Mujica different from other presidents. The second centers on discourses that construct proximity between Mujica and the audience, such as those addressing sustainability and the connections between Sweden, Uruguay and Mujica. The third highlights discourses that distance or downplay difference and revolve around constructions about Mujica’s political past. The paper ends with a discussion of how this representation is able to construct Mujica as a close other without, in the process, abandoning key tenets of contemporary capitalist ideology.

  • Desastre y Memoria Material : La Inundación 2003 en Santa Fe, Argentina
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Iberoamericana - Nordic Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. - Stockholm : Stockholm University Press. - 2002-4509 .- 0046-8444. ; 46:1, s. 42-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Iberoamericana - Nordic Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. - Stockholm : Stockholm University Press. - 2002-4509 .- 0046-8444. ; 46:1, s. 1-5

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Iberoamericana. Nordic Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. - : Stockholm University Press. - 2002-4509. ; 46:1, s. 99-108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article analyses 14 obituaries of men of science that appeared in the journal Boletín Geográfico Argentino between 1889 and 1910. It is argued that together they form a pantheon of memorable bodies that stands out in contrast to other bodies, namely those that, at the same time and by the same men, are being collected for the museums of natural history. The focus of the article lies on how the figure of the scientist is constructed through a series of recurrent themes, such as laboriosity, productivity and devotion to the nation. These, contrasted with other articles in the magazine, help us visualize the practices of power and of knowledge embedded in the genre. The discussion raises questions about the tensions between the private and the public as well as those between the individual and the community. The analysis shows that although the worthiness of a place in the pantheon of memorable men is closely linked to the exercise of violence in the name of a nation and in the name of science, this exercise is silenced at the moment of exhibiting death in the studied obituaries.

  • Beyond Parity in Figures: The Challenges in Reality of Municipal Women Councillors in Bolivia
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Iberoamericana – Nordic Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. - 2002-4509. ; 47:1, s. 1-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bolivia is a country that has advanced substantially regarding women’s representation in politics. In fact, at a global level, Bolivia rivals Rwanda at both the national and local representation levels. This is particularly true at the local level where several women from all social conditions and ethnicity groups have become the majority of municipal councillors, even though women mayors are still a rarity. However, parity in figures does not mean parity in reality. Many of these women councillors face hard realities impregnated with discrimination and harassment of all sorts. Moreover, some mechanisms—like the rotation principle designed to increase participation and democracy—have been turned against many of these women councillors. Based on a field work using interviews and participant observation as well as findings of previous relevant works, this article discusses these problems and offers an analysis as to the causes of such a situation where parity in figures is not reflected in shared power and equal respect in the daily realities at the local level.

  • Cooperative Entrepreneurialism and Entrepreneurial Discourses : Everyday Neoliberal Logic in a State-sponsored Cooperative in Provincial Argentina
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Iberoamericana - Nordic Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. - : Stockholm University Press. - 0046-8444 .- 2002-4509. ; 52:1, s. 1-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relationship between Latin American ‘Pink Tide’ governments and neoliberal market policies has been a topic of research across academic fields. Yet more empirical, ethnographically grounded research is needed on how neoliberalism shifts from being a reigning economic doctrine to a naturalized, common-sense logic, and how that logic operates among the masses within a socio-political environment intent on resisting neoliberalism. This article contributes to filling that gap. It explores the concept of neoliberalism as an everyday logic that manifests itself through an entrepreneurial discourse in a small state-sponsored cooperative in Santiago del Estero, North-western Argentina. Specifically, it analyses a) the relationship between a cooperative created by a state-regulated employment programme and the logic of neoliberalism; b) how understandings of entrepreneurialism serve as conveyers of the logic; and c) how the entrepreneurial discourse becomes normalized in the cooperative members’ narratives and self-representations and reflects in the making of their entrepreneurial selves. The article argues that neoliberalism-as-logic has become a guiding principle of and the engine behind popularly shared imaginaries and discourses of entrepreneurialism. That logic harbours a pursuit of freedom and self-governance, which makes ‘being entrepreneurial’ such a seductive way to understand and represent oneself.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Iberoamericana – Nordic Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. - : Stockholm University Press. - 2002-4509. ; 51:1, s. 26-28
  • Recension (refereegranskat)abstract

  • The Intersecting Identity Politics of the Ecuadorian Evangelical Indians
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Ibero-Americana, Nordic Journal of Latin American Studies. - Stockholm : Stockholm University Press. - 0046-8444 .- 2002-4509. ; 42:1-2, s. 135-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study analyses the Ecuadorian Evangelical Indigenous movement with a particular focus on the tensions between ethnicity and religion in political mobilization processes in the Chimborazo province. Chimborazo has been a traditional stronghold both of the Catholic Church and later of Evangelical churches, which makes the province exceptional and has triggered the formation of different political movements. The focus is placed on the social movement Ecuadorian Federation of Evangelical Indians (FEINE) and its political-electoral movement Amauta Jatari, as well as their complex relationships to the broader Indigenous movement. As for the theoretical-methodological approach, the article leans on ideas on Intersectionality – originally emerging from women´s studies – on relationships between socio-cultural identities and categories, which will be integrated into a sociological-political scientific analytical framework. This approach is valuable for problematizing, as well as better comprehending the complex mixture of identities that influence collective and individual behavior in society. Is there a certain hierarchic order between ethnic and religious identification among ethnically defined peoples with specific religious beliefs? Is this imaginable hierarchy persistent, or does it change according to differing social and political contexts?

  • Jacques Roumain and Gouverneurs de la rosée
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Iberoamericana : Nordic Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. - : Stockholm University Press. - 0046-8444 .- 2002-4509. ; 39:1-2, s. 173-180
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The year 2007 was the centennial of the birth of Jacques Roumain, the greatest Haitian author of all times. During his short life (he died in 1944) he cultivated a number of literary genres, publishing poems, novels and essays. All these have been collected for the first time in an impressive volume edited by Léon-François Hoffman: Jacques Roumain, OEuvres completes, (Roumain, 2003). Here we find Bois-d’ébène (1945), as well as other poetry, the two volumes of short stories, La proie et l’ombre (1931) and Les fantoches (1931), both dealing with the Haitian upper class, and his two great peasant novels, La montagne ensorcelée (1931) and Gouverneurs de la rosée (1944), his absolute masterpiece, published only after his untimely death at the age of 37, as well as his essay on the sacrifice of a voodoo drum, Le sacrifice du tambour-assôtô(r) (1943).
