  • Pitfalls and possibilities with international partnerships: : An interview with Gun-Britt Wärvik, the Swedish coordinator of an international partnership program
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Praxis in Higher Education. - 2003-3605. ; 5:1, s. 28-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper is based on an interview with one of the principal leaders of an international partnership program between Ethiopia and Sweden, 2018–2022. The purpose of this interview was to deepen the understanding of these kinds of partnerships and to learn more about the possibilities and pitfalls of working in a joint program between national and cultural contexts. We interviewed Professor Gun-Britt Wärvik, the Swedish coordinator of the doctoral program between Addis Ababa University (AAU) and the University of Gothenburg (GU). The interview results suggest that doctoral supervisory challenges were present as students often used concepts produced in cultural contexts foreign to their assigned supervisors. Additionally, the administrative burden was particularly challenging for the Ethiopian counterpart that coordinated the program. Overall, the program created many positive work opportunities for students, provided possibilities for the staff of both universities to exercise supervision and examination of doctoral students, and enriched international experiences for all involved.

  • Insights into teachers’ views on sharing ways of knowing and ways of teaching between and beyond existing disciplines
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Praxis in Higher Education. - : University of Boras, Faculty of Librarianship, Information, Education and IT. - 2003-3605. ; 2:2, s. 11-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since academic teachers belong to different disciplines and thus discourses, they have different ways of knowing and teaching. Recent societal challenges call for thinking beyond boundaries and re-visiting academic practices. The purpose of this study is to investigate how academic teachers view sharing of knowledge and teaching. The study is based on survey data from eight faculties and interviews of teachers from each of these faculties at the University of Gothenburg. The results show that professional development courses in higher education teaching and learning, as well as open practices, and collaboration between academic disciplines and society are practices, which Galison (1997) termed trading zones. These trading zones are sources of learning to theorize and to facilitate exchange among peers with the potential to develop knowledge, identity and moral commitments necessary to address societal challenges. Further, the results suggest that universities need to scaffold these sharing practices. The findings inform how academic teachers’ practices can be transformed into sharing between and beyond academic disciplines.

  • "Making" an academic supervisor
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Praxis in Higher Education. - Borås : Högskolan i Borås. - 2003-3605. ; 5:2, s. 12-26
  • Forskningsöversikt (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper is based on my reflections on a series of lectures given by me over a period of three years in a course called Supervising doctoral students. The lectures are, to a large extent, based on my own research on higher education policy, academic career, and gender, and highlight various topics concerning gender, power, and supervision. Through Hacking’s (2007) ideas on how research not only contributes to, describes, and analyses different aspects of the world, but also plays a role in how we make up institutions and people, I elaborate on what studies on gender, academic work, and supervision tell us and how we use the stories we tell as researchers. Researchers like me within the field of higher education research know a lot about gender divisions in academic career, but we seldom discuss how we are participating in normalising specific patterns. Can we present these results without also emphasising “gender difference” or gender divisions? The paper discusses how I handle this risk, but also raises issues about what it means to lecture on gender in higher education and includes reflections about my own position and competence as a lecturer.

  • Leadership praxis and the logic of capital: Accumulated labour and the exploitation of teaching in teaching intensive fields by academic leaders as agents of academic capitalism
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Praxis in Higher Education. - : University of Boras, Faculty of Librarianship, Information, Education and IT. - 2003-3605. ; 3:1, s. 49-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Marx identified exploitation as involving asymmetric relationships between individuals or groups who hold different relative positions within the nexus of cultural, political, economic and social power and advantage. Based on a synthesis of critical ethnographic research, the present article provides an analysis of exploitation in an unexpected domain, that of Swedish higher education. Its focus is on one specific part of the higher education field, that of local trust-based leadership and its management of the Swedish government block grant for research, at three higher education institutions. Using mainly auto-and meta-ethnographic methods, and looking specifically at data and analyses related to the enactment of recent higher education governance and finance acts, the article uncovers a structure of decision-making that undergirds an exploitation of accumulated labor from teaching intensive fields, through a form of academic capitalism that is adding to the un-evening of the academic field. There are seriously negative effects on teaching intensive fields like teacher education. These fields now struggle to maintain adequate scientific research connections and career opportunities for research-qualified staff whilst seeded fields have difficulty finding qualified staff toteach undergraduate courses and programs. The patterns of extraction and redistribution have clear links to the social-class and gender hierarchies of higher education and society in material history and may be an illustration of class and gender injustice.

  • Curriculum development and quality assurance of higher education in Sweden : The external stakeholder perspective
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Praxis in Higher Education. - 2003-3605. ; 2:1, s. 28-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article provides an external stakeholder perspective on the influence of higher education in Sweden, exploring their views on curriculum development and quality work at the programme level. Semi-structured interviews with a selected number of representatives of external stakeholders involved in various educational areas were conducted at seven higher education institutions. The participants argued that changes in their business sectors, and subsequent changes in the knowledge and skills in the labour needed, should encourage higher education institutions to adjust and develop their programmes. They did not anticipate or demand immediate changes in response to their comments, nor did they see themselves as a part of any quality assurance scheme. Uncertainties about the internal decision-making process and organisation in higher education institutions apparently do not facilitate external stakeholders’ understanding of their role in the larger scheme. However, all informants had comments on quality in higher education, perceiving it predominantly as something connected to the world of work. The practical implication of this study is that curriculum development at higher education institutions would benefit from communicating the internal decision-making processes to external stakeholders and agreeing on the expectations with them, in collaboration.

  • Conditions for a meaningful writing retreat : time, space, community and transition
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Praxis in Higher Education. - : University of Borås. - 2003-3605. ; 4:1, s. 56-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates a five-day residential retreat for seven women from one academic institution and examines writing retreats through the analysis of texts written by the participants. The aims of this paper are 1) to develop more knowledge about the experiences of what constitutes good conditions for writing in a writing retreat context, and 2) to identify elements of a meaningful writing retreat. The experiences and reflections of the participants are examined and concludes to four conditions that shaped the meaningfulness of the retreat: transition, space, time, and community.

  • Academic citizenship through the bundle of academic roles
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Praxis in Higher Education. - : University of Borås, Sweden. - 2003-3605. ; 6:2, s. 42-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As academic developers and higher education researchers, we, the authors, have pondered why engaging in public discourse is often found to be difficult by academics and how we can conceptualise and help prepare for the role of academic citizen in general and in more discipline-specific terms. Rather than approaching citizenship as an extraordinary task or role for the academic, we find that it may be best understood and approached as integral to being a researcher and teacher. We use perspectives on the knowledge society and the concept of co-production of science and society to suggest some conceptual inroads for understanding what shape the task of academic citizenship might take.
