  • On half-space problems for the discrete Boltzmann equation
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Il Nuovo Cimento C. - Bologna : Società Italiana di Fisica. - 2037-4909 .- 1826-9885. ; 33:1, s. 47-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study typical half-space problems of rarefied gas dynamics, including the problems of Milne and Kramer, for the discrete Boltzmann equation (a general discrete velocity model, DVM, with an arbitrary finite number of velocities). Then the discrete Boltzmann equation reduces to a system of ODEs. The data for the outgoing particles at the boundary are assigned, possibly linearly depending on the data for the incoming particles. A classification of well-posed half-space problems for the homogeneous, as well as the inhomogeneous, linearized discrete Boltzmann equation is made. In the non-linear case the solutions are assumed to tend to an assigned Maxwellian at infinity. The conditions on the data at the boundary needed for the existence of a unique (in a neighborhood of the assigned Maxwellian) solution of the problem are investigated. In the non-degenerate case (corresponding, in the continuous case, to the case when the Mach number at the Maxwellian at infinity is different of -1, 0 and 1) implicit conditions are found. Furthermore, under certain assumptions explicit conditions are found, both in the non-degenerate and degenerate cases. An application to axially symmetric models is also studied

  • Quantum gravity, higher derivatives and nonlocality
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: NUOVO CIMENTO C-COLLOQUIA AND COMMUNICATIONS IN PHYSICS. - : SOC ITALIANA FISICA. - 2037-4909 .- 1826-9885. ; 45:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the workshop Quantum Gravity, Higher Derivatives & Nonlocality (QGRAV-2021) was to assess our current understanding of the interplay between gravity and quantum mechanics, with particular attention to what is the main role of higher derivatives and nonlocality in the formulation of a consistent theory of quantum gravity, and whether they are really necessary to describe Nature at a fundamental level. The workshop had brought together various schools of thought, and besides talks numerous discussions were also held. In addition to focusing on formal aspects of several approaches, applications of higher derivatives arid non locality were also discussed in the context of cosmology and black-hole physics. In this preface article we present a concise explanation of the main problems underlying the quantization of gravity in the high-energy regime, briefly list several approaches that have been proposed so far, and also provide a gist of what was intensively discussed during the workshop.

  • Scenario modelling for the Divertor Tokamak Test facility
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: NUOVO CIMENTO C-COLLOQUIA AND COMMUNICATIONS IN PHYSICS. - : SOC ITALIANA FISICA. - 2037-4909. ; 45:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The scenario integrated modelling is a top priority work during the design of a new tokamak, as the Divertor Tokamak Test facility (DTT) under construction at the ENEA Research Center in Frascati. The first simulations of the main baseline scenarios contributed to the optimization of the DTT project, particularly with regard to the machine size and heating systems, besides serving as reference for diagnostics design. In this paper we report the first simulations of the full power baseline scenario in the final configuration of the machine and heating mix.

  • Collective wavefunction of Yrast states in 50Cr
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nuovo Cimento della Societa Italiana di Fisica C. - 2037-4909. ; 47:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the generator coordinate method the wavefunctions are defined with respect to reference states that can indicate different shapes and deformations, which are examples of collective generator coordinates. In this work, we study the collective wavefunctions of Yrast states up to the terminating state of 50Cr using a recently introduced framework to calculate projected states of spins up to I = 14 based on effective Hamiltonians and a 5 dimensional collective coordinate space.

  • In-service and pre-service teacher education in IBSE : The ESTABLISH approach
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nuovo Cimento C. - : Soc Italiana Fisica. - 2037-4909. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the main goals of the ESTABLISH 7fp project (available on line at http://www.establish-fp7.eu/) was the development and implementation of the professional development teacher education programmes (TEP) to support teachers in adopting inquiry-based strategies in their teaching. Within the project there was a model for in-service and pre-service teacher training in IBSE designed and implemented across 12 participating countries. The programme is based on 4 core elements and 4 additional elements that are built around the IBSE teaching units developed within the project. As accepted by ESTABLISH partners, all teacher training programmes include the minimum of the four elements, i.e. introduction to IBSE, industrial content knowledge, teacher as implementer and teacher as developer of IBSE teaching materials. There are also four additional elements designed in detail, i.e. ICT for IBSE, argumentation in the classroom, research and design projects for students, assessment of IBSE. These can be added to the programme optionally with regard to the level of teachers' IBSE skills and current situation in education and teachers' professional development within the country. This ESTABLISH model of TEP was followed in participating countries in order to change teachers' attitudes from traditional ways of teaching towards adopting inquiry strategies and their successful implementation in the classroom. Within the face-to-face workshops teachers experienced and developed their inquiry based teaching strategies using specifically developed materials. In addition, the e-platform has been developed to provide on-line support. This platform provides educators and teachers with all the necessary materials for the training and IBSE teaching units and other teaching materials for teachers' ongoing help. The teacher training programme was successfully implemented in Slovakia. There were two runs of teacher training workshops on IBSE already carried out. Moreover, the additional element ICT in IBSE was developed more deeply designing a separate teacher training course for it. The contribution discusses in more details the success and problems of implementation in the context of Slovak educational environment.

  • The Mini-EUSO telescope on board the International Space Station : Launch and first observations
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: NUOVO CIMENTO C-COLLOQUIA AND COMMUNICATIONS IN PHYSICS. - : SOC ITALIANA FISICA. - 2037-4909. ; 44:2-3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mini-EUSO is a telescope that observes the Earth from the International Space Station by recording ultraviolet emissions (290-430 nm) of cosmic, atmospheric and terrestrial origin with a field of view of 44. and on different time scales, from a few microseconds upwards. The scientific objectives are manifold and span several fields of research: Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays, atmospheric phenomena such as ELVEs, meteors and meteoroids, maps of the Earth night-time ultraviolet emissions and others. In this paper we will describe the instrument, the launching phase and we will discuss some of its first observations.

  • Geometry and physics of pseudodifferential operators on manifolds
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Il Nuovo Cimento C: colloquia and communications in physics. - 2037-4909. ; 38:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A review is made of the basic tools used in mathematics to define acalculus for pseudodifferential operators on Riemannian manifolds endowed with aconnection: existence theorem for the function that generalizes the phase; analogueof Taylor’s theorem; torsion and curvature terms in the symbolic calculus; the twokinds of derivative acting on smooth sections of the cotangent bundle of the Riemannianmanifold; the concept of symbol as an equivalence class. Physical motivationsand applications are then outlined, with emphasis on Green functions of quantumfield theory and Parker’s evaluation of Hawking radiation.

  • Geant4 simulation of the ABALONE photosensor
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Il Nuovo Cimento. - 2037-4909 .- 1826-9885. ; 45:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ABALONE is a new type of photosensor produced by PhotonLab, Inc. with cost effective mass production, robustness and high performance. This modern technology provides sensitivity to visible and UV light, exceptional radio-purity and excellent detection performance in terms of intrinsic gain, afterpulsing rate, timing resolution and single-photon sensitivity. The ABALONE is based on the acceleration of photoelectrons in vacuum. These are generated in a traditional photocathode and guided towards a window of scintillating material. The resulting scintillation light can be read from the outside via a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM). The device has been proposed as a possible candidate for the DARWIN experiment. We performed the complete simulation of the detector, mapped the electrostatic field within the vacuum of the sensor and studied its possible optimization.

  • Decay studies in the A∼225 Po-Fr region from the DESPEC campaign at GSI in 2021
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Il Nuovo Cimento. - : Società Italiana di Fisica. - 2037-4909. ; 45:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The HISPEC-DESPEC collaboration aims at investigating the structure of exotic nuclei formed in fragmentation reactions with decay spectroscopy measurements, as part of the FAIR Phase-0 campaign at GSI. This paper reports on first results of an experiment performed in spring 2021, with a focus on beta-decaystudies in the Po-Fr nuclei in the 220 < A <230 island of octupole deformation exploiting the DESPEC setup. Ion-beta correlations and fast-timing techniques are being employed, giving an insight into this difficult-to-reach region.

  • DESPEC Phase-0 campaign at GSI
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: NUOVO CIMENTO C-COLLOQUIA AND COMMUNICATIONS IN PHYSICS. - : SOC ITALIANA FISICA. - 2037-4909. ; 44:2-3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports preliminary results of the DESPEC campaign at GSI, focused on the study of neutron-deficient nuclei approaching Sn-100. The results presented show the isomeric decays of excited states with I-pi = 14(+) and 8(+) in Pd-96 and Pd-94, respectively. The detailed characterisation of the DESPEC set-up and analysis methodologies, proven in this experimental run, are crucial for the future campaigns.
