  • Organizational changes, trust and information sharing : an empirical study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Aslib Journal of Information Management. - : Emerald. - 2050-3806 .- 2050-3814. ; 71:5, s. 677-692
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeWhile there is relatively plenty of evidence for the positive impact of communication on the perceptions of organizational change, how organizational changes affect information sharing is relatively unknown. The purpose of this paper is to investigate if a favorable perception of ongoing organizational changes has a positive impact on information sharing and whether trust mediates this relationship.Design/methodology/approachA questionnaire (n=317) was administered to the employees of a large Finnish multinational organization. Partial least square structural equation modeling was used to test the hypotheses based on earlier research findings.FindingsThe results show that a positive perception of recent organizational changes improves information sharing both directly and indirectly, mediated by trust. Consequently, when changes are perceived negatively, employees recoil from information sharing which is known to have negative implications for organizations.Research limitations/implicationsData were collected in a single organization. The nature of the specific changes in the studied organization and its particularities undoubtedly had an effect on respondents’ perceptions.Originality/valueThis paper contributes to organizational information management research by elaborating on the relationship between organizational changes and interpersonal information sharing between employees. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first quantitative study confirming the impact of the perception of organizational changes on employee information-sharing behavior.

  • Thousands of examining eyes : credibility, authority and validity in biodiversity citizen science data production
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Aslib Journal of Information Management. - 2050-3806 .- 2050-3814. ; 75:1, s. 149-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe purpose of this study is to contribute with knowledge about how valid research data in biodiversity citizen science are produced through information practices and how notions of credibility and authority emerge from these practices.Design/methodology/approachData were collected through an empirical, interview-based study of the information practices of 15 participants active in the vicinity of the Swedish biodiversity citizen science information system Artportalen. Interview transcripts were analysed abductively and qualitatively through a coding scheme by working back and forth between theory and data. Values of credibility, authority and validity of research data were unfolded through a practice-oriented perspective to library and information studies by utilising the theoretical lens of boundary objects.FindingsNotions of credibility, authority and validity emerge through participant activities of transforming species observations to data, supplementing reports with objects of trust, augmenting identification through authority outreach and assessing credibility via peer monitoring. Credibility, authority and validity of research data are shown to be co-constructed in a distributed fashion by the participants and the information system.Originality/valueThe article extends knowledge about information practices in emerging, heterogeneous scholarly settings by focussing on the complex co-construction of credibility, authority and validity in relation to data production.

  • Argumentative practices and patterns in debating climate change on Twitter
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Aslib Journal of Information Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 2050-3806 .- 2050-3814. ; 75:1, s. 131-148
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate practices of argumentation on Twitter discussions about climate change.Design/methodology/approach: Conversational threads were collected from the Twitter API. Fundamental concepts from argumentation theory and linking practices were operationalised through a coding schema for content analysis. Tweets were analysed in the context of the discussions and coded according to their argumentative approach, interaction type and argumentation stage. Linked and embedded sources were analysed in order to find how they were used in arguments, the plausibility and soundness of the message, the consistency and trustworthiness of the linked source and its adequacy with the target audience.Findings: Among the interactions between arguers, this study found five typical practices and several patterns involving the dynamics of the conversations, the strategy of the argumentation and the linking practices. Although the rhetorical approach was prominent, the agreement was rarely achieved. The arguers used a variety of sources to justify or support their positions, often embedding non-textual content. These linking practices, together with the strategy adopted and the topics discussed, suggest the involvement of a multiple audience engaged in discussing ad lib scientific artefacts, topics and outputs.Originality/value: While Twitter has been the focus for many research papers, the conversational threads have been given little attention so far. With the Twitter API making conversations more accessible for research, this paper does not only give insight into multiple audience group argumentation dynamics but also provides a method to study the conversations from an argumentation theory perspective.

  • Bridging polarised Twitter discussions : the interactions of the users in the middle
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Aslib Journal of Information Management. - 2050-3806 .- 2050-3814. ; 73:2, s. 129-143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to analyse the interactions of bridging users in Twitter discussionsabout vaccination.Design/methodology/approach – Conversational threads were collected through filtering the Twitterstream using keywords and the most active participants in the conversations. Following data collection andanonymisation of tweets and user profiles, a retweet network was created to find users bridging the mainclusters. Four conversations were selected, ranging from 456 to 1,983 tweets long, and then analysed throughcontent analysis.Findings – Although different opinions met in the discussions, a consensus was rarely built. Many subthreadsinvolved insults and criticism, and participants seemed not interested in shifting their positions. However, examples of reasoned discussions were also found.Originality/value – The study analyses conversations on Twitter, which is rarely studied. The focus on theinteractions of bridging users adds to the uniqueness of the paper.

  • The structuring of information through search
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Aslib Journal of Information Management. - 2050-3806 .- 2050-3814. ; 68:4, s. 390-406
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: This study explores informational structures producing and organizing the construction of waste sorting in Sweden. It shows how the issue is constructed by it being searched for in Google and how this contributes to the specific informational texture of waste sorting in Sweden. It is guided by the following questions: Who are the main actors and which are the central topics featuring in Google results on popular, suggested searches for waste sorting in Sweden? What do the link relations between these tell us about the issue space that is formed around waste sorting in Sweden? How is the construction of the notions of waste sorting and waste shaped in the information available through Google’s features for related and other relevant searches? Design/methodology/approach: Waste sorting is discussed as a practice structured along moral rules and as a classification exercise. The study brings together two types of material, results from searches carried out in Google and lists of Google query suggestions for relevant search terms. These are analysed with a mixed method approach, uniting quantitative network analysis and qualitative content analysis of query suggestions. A sociomaterial approach theoretically grounds the analysis. Finding: Waste sorting in Sweden emerges as an issue that is characterised by dense networks of rules and regulation, focused in public authorities and government agencies, which in turn address consumers, waste management businesses and other authorities. Search engine use and waste sorting in Sweden are shown to be joined together in various mundane everyday life practices and practices of governance that become visible through the search engine in form of search results and suggested searches. The search engine is shown to work as a fluid classification system, which is also created and shaped by its use.Originality/value: The study offers a novel methodological approach to studying the informational structures of an issue and of its shaping through it being searched for. The sociomaterially grounded analysis of Google as a fluid classification system is original.

  • Recognition and reward in the academy : Valuing publication oeuvres in biomedicine, economics and history
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Aslib Journal of Information Management. - 2050-3806 .- 2050-3814. ; 69:5, s. 607-623
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The publication oeuvre of a researcher carries great value when academic careers are assessed, and being recognised as a successful candidate is usually equated with being a productive author. Yet, howpublications are valued in the context of evaluating careers is so far an understudied topic. The paper aims to discuss these issues.Design/methodology/approach – Through a content analysis of assessment reports in three disciplines – biomedicine, economics and history – this paper analyses how externalities are used to evaluate publication oeuvres. Externalities are defined as features such as reviews and bibliometric indicators, which can be assessed without evaluating the epistemological claims made in the actual text.Findings – All three fields emphasise similar aspects when assessing: authorship, publication prestige, temporality of research, reputation within the field and boundary keeping. Yet, how these facets of quality are evaluated, and the means through which they are assessed differs between disciplines. Moreover, research fields orient themselves according to different temporal horizons, i.e. history looks to the past and economics to the future when research is evaluated.Research limitations/implications – The complexities involved in the process of evaluating candidates are also reflected in the findings, and while the comparative approach taken effectively highlights domain specific differences it may also hide counter-narratives, and subtle intradisciplinary discussion on quality.Originality/value – This study offers a novel perspective on how publications are valued when assessing academic careers. Especially striking is how research across different fields is evaluated through different time horizons. This finding is significant in the debate on more overarching and formal systems of evaluation.

  • Worried, anxious and uplifted : emotions of Chinese parents of children with autism spectrum disorder when expressing information needs
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Aslib Journal of Information Management. - 2050-3806 .- 2050-3814.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – To reveal the emotions and information needs expressed by Chinese parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in an online forum, and their relationship.Design/methodology/approach – The 10,062 data were from “Yi Lin”, China’s largest online forum for ASD. Open coding identified parents’ emotions and information needs, and a chi-squared test explored the correlation.Findings – First, parents’ emotions were categorized into four themes: emotions about coping with their child’s care, emotions about the parents’ own behavior, emotions about social support with other parents and emotions about anticipating the future. Parents’ overall emotions were negative (72.47%), while the tendency of emotions varied among the four themes. Second, five information needs topics were expressed: intervention and training of ASD, parenting experiences, schooling issues, social interaction and support and future development. Different information needs topics contained different themes of emotions. Third, the tendency of emotions and expression of information needs were significantly correlated. Negative emotions had a statistically significant correlation in expression of information needs.Originality/value – This study reveals the relationship between the emotions and information needs expressed by parents of children with ASD. The ASD forum could develop emotional support modules and functions for parents and facilitate emotional communication between parents.
