  • Acoustic spectral hole-burning in a two-level system ensemble
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: npj Quantum Information. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2056-6387. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Microscopic two-level system (TLS) defects at dielectric surfaces and interfaces are among the dominant sources of loss in superconducting quantum circuits, and their properties have been extensively probed using superconducting resonators and qubits. We report on spectroscopy of TLSs coupling to the strain field in a surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonator. The narrow free spectral range of the resonator allows for two-tone spectroscopy where a strong pump is applied at one resonance, while a weak signal is used to probe a different mode. We map the spectral hole burnt by the pump tone as a function of frequency and extract parameters of the TLS ensemble. Our results suggest that detuned acoustic pumping can be used to enhance the coherence of superconducting devices by saturating TLSs.

  • Identification and tunable optical coherent control of transition-metal spins in silicon carbide
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: NPJ QUANTUM INFORMATION. - : SPRINGERNATURE. - 2056-6387. ; 4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Color centers in wide-bandgap semiconductors are attractive systems for quantum technologies since they can combine long-coherent electronic spin and bright optical properties. Several suitable centers have been identified, most famously the nitrogen-vacancy defect in diamond. However, integration in communication technology is hindered by the fact that their optical transitions lie outside telecom wavelength bands. Several transition-metal impurities in silicon carbide do emit at and near telecom wavelengths, but knowledge about their spin and optical properties is incomplete. We present all-optical identification and coherent control of molybdenum-impurity spins in silicon carbide with transitions at near-infrared wavelengths. Our results identify spin S= 1/2 for both the electronic ground and excited state, with highly anisotropic spin properties that we apply for implementing optical control of ground-state spin coherence. Our results show optical lifetimes of similar to 60 ns and inhomogeneous spin dephasing times of similar to 0.3 mu S, establishing relevance for quantum spin-photon interfacing.

  • Decoherence benchmarking of superconducting qubits
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: npj Quantum Information. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2056-6387. ; 5:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We benchmark the decoherence of superconducting transmon qubits to examine the temporal stability of energy relaxation, dephasing, and qubit transition frequency. By collecting statistics during measurements spanning multiple days, we find the mean parameters (T) over bar (1) = 49 mu s and (T) over bar (2)* = 95 mu s; however, both of these quantities fluctuate, explaining the need for frequent re-calibration in qubit setups. Our main finding is that fluctuations in qubit relaxation are local to the qubit and are caused by instabilities of near-resonant two-level-systems (TLS). Through statistical analysis, we determine sub-millihertz switching rates of these TLS and observe the coherent coupling between an individual TLS and a transmon qubit. Finally, we find evidence that the qubit's frequency stability produces a 0.8 ms limit on the pure dephasing which we also observe. These findings raise the need for performing qubit metrology to examine the reproducibility of qubit parameters, where these fluctuations could affect qubit gate fidelity.

  • Transmon qubit readout fidelity at the threshold for quantum error correction without a quantum-limited amplifier
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: npj Quantum Information. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2056-6387. ; 9:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-fidelity and rapid readout of a qubit state is key to quantum computing and communication, and it is a prerequisite for quantum error correction. We present a readout scheme for superconducting qubits that combines two microwave techniques: applying a shelving technique to the qubit that reduces the contribution of decay error during readout, and a two-tone excitation of the readout resonator to distinguish among qubit populations in higher energy levels. Using a machine-learning algorithm to post-process the two-tone measurement results further improves the qubit-state assignment fidelity. We perform single-shot frequency-multiplexed qubit readout, with a 140 ns readout time, and demonstrate 99.5% assignment fidelity for two-state readout and 96.9% for three-state readout–without using a quantum-limited amplifier.

  • Highly coherent spin states in carbon nanotubes coupled to cavity photons
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: npj Quantum Information. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2056-6387. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spins confined in quantum dots are considered as a promising platform for quantum information processing. While many advanced quantum operations have been demonstrated, experimental as well as theoretical efforts are now focusing on the development of scalable spin quantum bit architectures. One particularly promising method relies on the coupling of spin quantum bits to microwave cavity photons. This would enable the coupling of distant spins via the exchange of virtual photons for two qubit gate applications, which still remains to be demonstrated with spin qubits. Here, we use a circuit QED spin-photon interface to drive a single electronic spin in a carbon nanotube-based double quantum dot using cavity photons. The microwave spectroscopy allows us to identify an electrically controlled spin transition with a decoherence rate which can be tuned to be as low as 250 kHz. We show that this value is consistent with the expected hyperfine coupling in carbon nanotubes. These coherence properties, which can be attributed to the use of pristine carbon nanotubes stapled inside the cavity, should enable coherent spin-spin interaction via cavity photons and compare favorably to the ones recently demonstrated in Si-based circuit QED experiments. Our clean and controlled nano-assembly technique of carbon nanotubes in the cavity could be further improved by purified C-12 growth to get rid of the nuclear spins resulting in an even higher spin coherence.

  • Quantum inverse iteration algorithm for programmable quantum simulators
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: npj Quantum Information. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2056-6387. ; 6:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose a quantum inverse iteration algorithm, which can be used to estimate ground state properties of a programmable quantum device. The method relies on the inverse power iteration technique, where the sequential application of the Hamiltonian inverse to an initial state prepares the approximate ground state. To apply the inverse Hamiltonian operation, we write it as a sum of unitary evolution operators using the Fourier approximation approach. This allows to reformulate the protocol as separate measurements for the overlap of initial and propagated wavefunction. The algorithm thus crucially depends on the ability to run Hamiltonian dynamics with an available quantum device, and can be used for analog quantum simulators. We benchmark the performance using paradigmatic examples of quantum chemistry, corresponding to molecular hydrogen and beryllium hydride. Finally, we show its use for studying the ground state properties of relevant material science models, which can be simulated with existing devices, considering an example of the Bose-Hubbard atomic simulator.

  • Characterizing decoherence rates of a superconducting qubit by direct microwave scattering
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: npj Quantum Information. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2056-6387. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We experimentally investigate a superconducting qubit coupled to the end of an open transmission line, in a regime where the qubit decay rates to the transmission line and to its own environment are comparable. We perform measurements of coherent and incoherent scattering, on- and off-resonant fluorescence, and time-resolved dynamics to determine the decay and decoherence rates of the qubit. In particular, these measurements let us discriminate between non-radiative decay and pure dephasing. We combine and contrast results across all methods and find consistent values for the extracted rates. The results show that the pure dephasing rate is one order of magnitude smaller than the non-radiative decay rate for our qubit. Our results indicate a pathway to benchmark decoherence rates of superconducting qubits in a resonator-free setting.

  • Quantum efficiency, purity and stability of a tunable, narrowband microwave single-photon source
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: npj Quantum Information. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2056-6387. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate an on-demand source of microwave single photons with 71–99% intrinsic quantum efficiency. The source is narrowband (300 kHz) and tuneable over a 600 MHz range around 5.2 GHz. Such a device is an important element in numerous quantum technologies and applications. The device consists of a superconducting transmon qubit coupled to the open end of a transmission line. A π-pulse excites the qubit, which subsequently rapidly emits a single photon into the transmission line. A cancellation pulse then suppresses the reflected π-pulse by 33.5 dB, resulting in 0.005 photons leaking into the photon emission channel. We verify strong antibunching of the emitted photon field and determine its Wigner function. Non-radiative decay and 1/f flux noise both affect the quantum efficiency. We also study the device stability over time and identify uncorrelated discrete jumps of the pure dephasing rate at different qubit frequencies on a time scale of hours, which we attribute to independent two-level system defects in the device dielectrics, dispersively coupled to the qubit. Our single-photon source with only one input port is more compact and scalable compared to standard implementations.

  • Resolving Fock states near the Kerr-free point of a superconducting resonator
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: npj Quantum Information. - 2056-6387. ; 9:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have designed a tunable nonlinear resonator terminated by a SNAIL (Superconducting Nonlinear Asymmetric Inductive eLement). Such a device possesses a Kerr-free point in which the external magnetic flux allows to suppress the Kerr interaction. We have excited photons near this Kerr-free point and characterized the device using a transmon qubit. The excitation spectrum of the qubit allows to observe photon-number-dependent frequency shifts about nine times larger than the qubit linewidth. Our study demonstrates a compact integrated platform for continuous-variable quantum processing that combines large couplings, considerable relaxation times and excellent control over the photon mode structure in the microwave domain.

  • Spectrally reconfigurable quantum emitters enabled by optimized fast modulation
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: NPJ QUANTUM INFORMATION. - : NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP. - 2056-6387. ; 6:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ability to shape photon emission facilitates strong photon-mediated interactions between disparate physical systems, thereby enabling applications in quantum information processing, simulation and communication. Spectral control in solid state platforms such as color centers, rare earth ions, and quantum dots is particularly attractive for realizing such applications on-chip. Here we propose the use of frequency-modulated optical transitions for spectral engineering of single photon emission. Using a scattering-matrix formalism, we find that a two-level system, when modulated faster than its optical lifetime, can be treated as a single-photon source with a widely reconfigurable photon spectrum that is amenable to standard numerical optimization techniques. To enable the experimental demonstration of this spectral control scheme, we investigate the Stark tuning properties of the silicon vacancy in silicon carbide, a color center with promise for optical quantum information processing technologies. We find that the silicon vacancy possesses excellent spectral stability and tuning characteristics, allowing us to probe its fast modulation regime, observe the theoretically-predicted two-photon correlations, and demonstrate spectral engineering. Our results suggest that frequency modulation is a powerful technique for the generation of new light states with unprecedented control over the spectral and temporal properties of single photons.
