  • Investigation of Inertia Response and Rate of Change of Frequency in Low Rotational Inertial Scenario of Synchronous Dominated System
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Electronics. - : MDPI AG. - 2079-9292. ; 10:18, s. 2288-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The shift to a sustainable energy future is becoming more reliant on large-scale deployment of renewable and distributed energy resources raising concerns about frequency stability. Rate of Change of Frequency (RoCoF) is necessary as a system inertia metric in order for network operators to perform control steps to preserve system operation. This paper presents in a straightforward and illustrative way several relevant aspects of the inertia response and RoCoF calculation that could help to understand and explain the implementation and results of inertial response controllers on power converter-based technologies. Qualitative explanations based on illustrative numerical experiments are used to cover the effects on the system frequency response of reduced rotational inertia in synchronous dominated power systems. One main contribution of this paper is making evident the importance of the governor action to avoid the synchronous machine taking active power from the system during the recovering period of kinetic energy in an under frequency event.

  • Multi-Layer Latency Aware Workload Assignment of E-Transport IoT Applications in Mobile Sensors Cloudlet Cloud Networks
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Electronics. - Switzerland : MDPI. - 2079-9292. ; 10:14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • These days, with the emerging developments in wireless communication technologies, such as 6G and 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, the usage of E-Transport applications has been increasing progressively. These applications are E-Bus, E-Taxi, self-autonomous car, E-Train and E-Ambulance, and latency-sensitive workloads executed in the distributed cloud network. Nonetheless, many delays present in cloudlet-based cloud networks, such as communication delay, round-trip delay and migration during the workload in the cloudlet-based cloud network. However, the distributed execution of workloads at different computing nodes during the assignment is a challenging task. This paper proposes a novel Multi-layer Latency (e.g., communication delay, round-trip delay and migration delay) Aware Workload Assignment Strategy (MLAWAS) to allocate the workload of E-Transport applications into optimal computing nodes. MLAWAS consists of different components, such as the Q-Learning aware assignment and the Iterative method, which distribute workload in a dynamic environment where runtime changes of overloading and overheating remain controlled. The migration of workload and VM migration are also part of MLAWAS. The goal is to minimize the average response time of applications. Simulation results demonstrate that MLAWAS earns the minimum average response time as compared with the two other existing strategies

  • A Novel Adaptive Battery-Aware Algorithm for Data Transmission in IoT-Based Healthcare Applications
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Electronics. - : MDPI AG. - 2079-9292. ; 10:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The internet of things (IoT) comprises various sensor nodes for monitoring physiological signals, for instance, electrocardiogram (ECG), electroencephalogram (EEG), blood pressure, and temperature, etc., with various emerging technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and cellular networks. The IoT for medical healthcare applications forms the internet of medical things (IoMT), which comprises multiple resource-restricted wearable devices for health monitoring due to heterogeneous technological trends. The main challenge for IoMT is the energy drain and battery charge consumption in the tiny sensor devices. The non-linear behavior of the battery uses less charge; additionally, an idle time is introduced for optimizing the charge and battery lifetime, and hence the efficient recovery mechanism. The contribution of this paper is three-fold. First, a novel adaptive battery-aware algorithm (ABA) is proposed, which utilizes the charges up to its maximum limit and recovers those charges that remain unused. The proposed ABA adopts this recovery effect for enhancing energy efficiency, battery lifetime and throughput. Secondly, we propose a novel framework for IoMT based pervasive healthcare. Thirdly, we test and implement the proposed ABA and framework in a hardware platform for energy efficiency and longer battery lifetime in the IoMT. Furthermore, the transition of states is modeled by the deterministic mealy finite state machine. The Convex optimization tool in MATLAB is adopted and the proposed ABA is compared with other conventional methods such as battery recovery lifetime enhancement (BRLE). Finally, the proposed ABA enhances the energy efficiency, battery lifetime, and reliability for intelligent pervasive healthcare

  • A Hybrid Approach Based on SOCP and the Discrete Version of the SCA for Optimal Placement and Sizing DGs in AC Distribution Networks
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Electronics. - : Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute. - 2079-9292. ; 10:1, s. 26-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper deals with the problem of the optimal placement and sizing of distributed generators (DGs) in alternating current (AC) distribution networks by proposing a hybrid master–slave optimization procedure. In the master stage, the discrete version of the sine–cosine algorithm (SCA) determines the optimal location of the DGs, i.e., the nodes where these must be located, by using an integer codification. In the slave stage, the problem of the optimal sizing of the DGs is solved through the implementation of the second-order cone programming (SOCP) equivalent model to obtain solutions for the resulting optimal power flow problem. As the main advantage, the proposed approach allows converting the original mixed-integer nonlinear programming formulation into a mixed-integer SOCP equivalent. That is, each combination of nodes provided by the master level SCA algorithm to locate distributed generators brings an optimal solution in terms of its sizing; since SOCP is a convex optimization model that ensures the global optimum finding. Numerical validations of the proposed hybrid SCA-SOCP to optimal placement and sizing of DGs in AC distribution networks show its capacity to find global optimal solutions. Some classical distribution networks (33 and 69 nodes) were tested, and some comparisons were made using reported results from literature. In addition, simulation cases with unity and variable power factor are made, including the possibility of locating photovoltaic sources considering daily load and generation curves. All the simulations were carried out in the MATLAB software using the CVX optimization tool.

  • On the symbol error probability of stbc-noma with timing offsets and imperfect successive interference cancellation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Electronics. - : MDPI AG. - 2079-9292. ; 10:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Due to the ability to handle a large number of users, low latency, and high data rates, NON-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is considered a promising access technology for next-generation communication systems. However, as the number of users increases, each user experiences a greater number of successive interference cancellations (SIC), causing the system’s performance to decline. With the increase in the number of users, the fraction of power allocated to each user becomes smaller. Cooperative communication in downlink NOMA is considered as a potential approach to enhance the reliability, capacity, and performance over wireless channels. Space-time block code (STBC)-aided cooperative NOMA (CNOMA) offers an opportunity to improve the weak users’ signal-to-interference-plus-noise (SINR) through strong user cooperation. In this paper, we study the symbol error probability (SEP) performance of the STBC-NOMA and derive the asymptotic expression for SEP when the network is impaired with imperfect SIC (ipSIC) and timing offsets. The simulation results show that the performance of STBC-NOMA was degraded significantly with an increase in the imperfection of SIC and timing errors and that traditional orthogonal access schemes, such as orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) and time division multiple access (TDMA), should be used after a threshold SIC level. © 2021 by the authors. • Battery powered inductive welding system for electrofusion joints in optical fiber microducts
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Electronics. - : MDPI AG. - 2079-9292. ; 10:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical fiber microducts are joined together by mechanical joints. These mechanical joints are bulky, require more space per joint, and are prone to air pressure leakage and water seepage during service. A battery powered electrofusion welding system with a resistive-type joint has been recently developed to replace mechanical joints. These resistive-type electrofusion joints require physical connectors for power input. Due to a different installation environment, the power input connectors of resistive optical fiber microduct joints may corrode over time. This corrosion of connectors will eventually cause water seepage or air pressure leakage in the long run. Moreover, due to connector corrosion, resistive-type optical fiber microduct joints cannot be re-heated in future if the need arises. In this study, an inductively coupled electrofusion-type joint was proposed and investigated. This inductive-type electrofusion joint is not prone to long-term corrosion risk, due to the absence of power connectors. Inductive-type electrofusion joints can be re-heated again for resealing or removal in the long run, as no metal part is exposed to the environment. The battery powered inductive welding system can be easily powered with a 38 volts 160 watt-hour battery. The inductive-type electrofusion joint was welded within one second, and passed a 300-newton pull strength test and a 10-bar air pressure leakage test. It was demonstrated that the power input requirement for inductive electrofusion joints is 64% higher than that of resistive electrofusion joints. However, these inductive joints are relatively easy to manufacture, inexpensive, have no air leakage, and no water seepage risk in highly corrosive environments.

  • LTspice electro-thermal model of joule heating in high density polyethylene optical fiber microducts
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Electronics. - : MDPI AG. - 2079-9292. ; 8:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At present, optical fiber microducts are joined together by mechanical type joints. Mechanical joints are bulky, require more space in multiple duct installations, and have poor water sealing capability. Optical fiber microducts are made of high-density polyethylene which is considered best for welding by remelting. Mechanical joints can be replaced with welded joints if the outer surface layer of the optical fiber microduct is remelted within one second and without thermal damage to the inner surface of the optical fiber duct. To fulfill these requirements, an electro-thermal model of Joule heat generation using a copper coil and heat propagation inside different layers of optical fiber microducts was developed and validated. The electro-thermal model is based on electro-thermal analogy that uses the electrical equivalent to thermal parameters. Depending upon the geometric shape and material properties of the high-density polyethylene, low-density polyethylene, and copper coil, the thermal resistance and thermal capacitance values were calculated and connected to the Cauer RC-ladder configuration. The power input to Joule heating coil and thermal convection resistance to surrounding air were also calculated and modelled. The calculated thermal model was then simulated in LTspice, and real measurements with 50 µm K-type thermocouples were conducted to check the validity of the model. Due to the non-linear transient thermal behavior of polyethylene and variations in the convection resistance values, the calculated thermal model was then optimized for best curve fitting. Optimizations were conducted for convection resistance and the power input model only. The calculated thermal parameters of the polyethylene layers were kept intact to preserve the thermal model to physical structure relationship. Simulation of the optimized electro-thermal model and actual measurements showed to be in good agreement.

  • Research Challenges and Opportunities in Drone Forensics Models
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Electronics. - Switzerland : MDPI. - 2079-9292. ; 10:13
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The emergence of unmanned aerial vehicles (also referred to as drones) has transformed the digital landscape of surveillance and supply chain logistics, especially in terrains where such was previously deemed unattainable. Moreover, the adoption of drones has further led to the proliferation of diverse drone types and drone-related criminality, which has introduced a myriad of security and forensics-related concerns. As a step towards understanding the state-of-the-art research into these challenges and potential approaches to mitigation, this study provides a detailed review of existing digital forensic models using the Design Science Research method. The outcome of this study generated in-depth knowledge of the research challenges and opportunities through which an effective investigation can be carried out on drone-related incidents. Furthermore, a potential generic investigation model has been proposed. The findings presented in this study are essentially relevant to forensic researchers and practitioners towards a guided methodology for drone-related event investigation. Ultimately, it is important to mention that this study presents a background for the development of international standardization for drone forensics.

  • Kronecker-Based Fusion Rule for Cooperative Spectrum Sensing with Multi-Antenna Receivers
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Electronics. - : MDPI AG. - 2079-9292. ; 3:4, s. 675-688
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper considers a novel fusion rule for spectrum sensing scheme for a cognitive radio network with multi-antenna receivers. The proposed scheme exploits the fact that when any primary signal is present, measurements are spatially correlated due to presence of inter-antenna and inter-receiver spatial correlation. In order to exploit this spatial structure, the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) operates with the determinant of the sample covariance matrix. Therefore, it depends on the sample size N and the dimensionality of the received data (i.e., the number of receivers K and antennas L). However, when the dimensionality fK; Lg is on the order, or larger than the sample size N, the GLRT degenerates due to the ill-conditioning of the sample covariance matrix. In order to circumvent this issue, we propose two techniques that exploit the inner spatial structure of the received observations by using single pair and multi-pairs Kronecker products. The performance of the proposed detectors is evaluated by means of numerical simulations, showing important advantages with respect to the traditional (i.e., unstructured) GLRT approach.
