  • Virtual worlds, machinima and cooperation over borders
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Sens Public: International Web Journal. - : L’Association Sens Public. - 2104-3272.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cooperation over borders between individuals and groups is possible using online three-dimensional virtual worlds. This cooperation occurs in the production of art, research, teaching and learning, and performance as well as in building social, professional and personal contexts. The borders that are crossed can be geopolitical, generational, spatial and embodied. In order to maintain coherence for people to meet, talk, build, write, perform and exchange in virtual worlds, a sense and understanding of place is required. Such human activities as meeting are reliant on a shared space and place. This chapter integrates the idea of sharing places in examples of how virtual worlds can provide common spaces and places from a series of projects involving art, documentation, teaching and communication. By using examples of one artist’s project and several machinima – videos made using screen-capture software on computers, to film places and avatar actors in virtual worlds – I argue these virtual worlds can enable cooperation over a variety of borders through sharing.

  • Authenticity and Verfremdung : Öyvind Fahlström’s performance Kisses Sweeter than Wine (1966)
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sens public. - Montreal : University of Montreal. - 2104-3272. ; :2020/03/23, s. 1-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Performance art has been regarded as solidly rooted in the “Hierund Jetzt”, asserted by Walter Benjamin as the only remaining conditionfor the Aura. However, as Philip Auslander observes, every performancetoday is always already mediatized in one way or another, and still we might experience liveness and then also authenticity. Mediatizationis, therefore, a (necessary) condition for authenticity. Inmy discussion on the Swedish artist Öyvind Fahlström’s (1928–76) performanceKisses Sweeter than Wine 1966, I nonetheless argue that noteven the use of Verfremdungseffekts in avant-garde performance disruptsthe construction of authenticity, even though this effect is usedto attack the (presupposed) media-transparency believed to be necessaryfor an “authentic” experience. In his use of new technology anddifferent broadcasting media, Fahlström was a forerunner for mediaart. The intermedial intricacy can be fully understood and discussedonly in our own information age. His and other similar experiments inthe 1960s are important links in the genealogy of today’s networked, global and multiscreen world, since they constitute early confluencesof cybernetics, art and media. This is best seen in his performance, which was part of 9 Evenings. Theatre and Engineering arranged, in1966, by Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.) at the 69th RegimentArmory in New York. Fahlström mixes performance on stagewith a plethora of mediated and mediatized events, which results ina show that is characterized by strong Verfremdungseffekts, yet stillgives rise to an experience of authenticity.

  • Identity Conflicts among Oriental Christians in Sweden
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Sens Public: Revue Internationale. - 2104-3272.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This article deals with the Assyrian, Chaldean and Syrian Orthodox immigrants to Sweden. They form a large group coming mostly from Turkey, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq. From the start they have had complicated relations with the Swedish government and needed to navigate the country’s ever changing immigration and integration policies. The demands of living in diaspora has also aided in splitting the group into two rival sections. One calls itself “Assyrians” and is basically modernist and secular in orientation. The other calls itself “Syrian” and is basically traditionalist and religious in orientation. This bifurcation has had many consequences for the ability of the group to make an impact on the surrounding Swedish society.

  • National Identity, Inclusion and Exclusion : An Empirical Investigation
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Sens Public, Revue Internationale - International Web Journal. - Paris : Association Sens-Public. - 2104-3272.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Results from a research project conducted among 1000 secondary school students inSweden are used for discussing superordinate national identity as a means for immigrantsintegration into democratic politics and the challenges this may present for social scienceeducation. The theoretical point of departure is taken within social identity theory, with emphasison its findings concerning relationships between superordinate and subgroup identities. It issuggested that a superordinate national identity perceived as inclusive, by immigrants and thenative population, would be conducive to integration into democratic nation-states. Such statesare seen as the dominant organizational form for democratic politics in the foreseeable future. It isargued that command of the dominant language of society is most important of the inclusivecriteria. Other such criteria are respect of the state's political institutions and feelings of belongingto the country where you live. The argument is supported by data, showing a majority ofsecondary school students of self-identified 'Swedish' or non-'Swedish' backgrounds in favourof inclusive criteria for a 'Swedish' national identity

  • Leçons de l’élection présidentielle camerounaise de 2018 : Le changement dans la continuité
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Sens Public. - 2104-3272. ; :2 juillet
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The article proposes to elaborate an anthropology of the Cameroonian State in order to understand the political stakes of the last presidential election of 2018 and the failure of the multiparty system introduced at the beginning of the 1990s. From a postcolonial perspective, it seems that Cameroon reorganized itself around a unitary Francophone State to consolidate the current power of the elite. The article describes the mechanisms of this reification by relying on the constitutional texts and the institutions protecting the status quo. It also discusses the geopolitical challenges of the terrorist group Boko Haram and the crisis of the English-speaking part. These threats tend to strengthen the unitary and security State to the detriment of a political debate on the future of Cameroon.

  • Diversity and similarity beyond ethnicity : migrants’ material practices
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Sens Public : Revue Internationale – International Web Journal. - 2104-3272. ; :101004
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Ethnicity paradigm in migration research - looking at migrants as ‘members’ of ethnic communities and ‘bearers’ of ethnic identities – hinders the understanding of diversity and similarity beyond ethnicity. This article promotes ethnographic research that treats the importance of ethnicity as an empirical question, while focusing on migrants’ material practices. It proposes a shift of interest from material representations of social relations to the very materiality of objects in transnational contexts of migration, and to what people actually do in order to maintain vital connections that constitute transnational social fields. Those connections are often dependent on objects that migrants bring along, send, receive, and use.

  • Entretien avec Michel Crozier, penseur transatlantique
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Sens Public. - Lyon. - 2104-3272. ; , s. 7-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
