  • Identity and the Elusive self : Western and Eastern Approaches to Being No One
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sport Psychology in Action. - Philadelphia, PA : Routledge. - 2152-0704 .- 2152-0712. ; 4:11, s. 243-253
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ideas about self and identity being illusions have been around for a long time in both Eastern and Western philosophies and psychologies. In this article, I trace the concept of there being no independent self (separate from conscious experience) from its ancient roots in the philosophies of Heraclitus and the Buddha through the Age of Enlightenment (David Hume) to modern times (William James, the Dalai Lama). In sport and exercise psychology, substantial interest has grown in mindfulness practices with little attention paid to its original goal in Buddhism of the realization of no-self. The question is, however, what might be the usefulness of these concepts about the illusory nature of the self and identity in the world of sport and exercise psychology service? © 2020 The Author(s). • Toward the Career-Long Psychological Support Services : Insights from Swedish Handball
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sport Psychology in Action. - Philadelphia, PA : Routledge. - 2152-0704 .- 2152-0712. ; 12:4, s. 245-258
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The authors of this paper share how they developed and validated an applied framework termed the career-long psychological support services in Swedish handball (CPS-H). The CPS-H is grounded in career research within Swedish handball and examples of efficient career assistance practice complemented by applied experiences of the first author. The authors used a heuristic approach to sketch the CPS-H initial version, which later was validated in three focus groups with end-users (handball players, coaches, and sport psychology practitioners) and transformed into the validated CPS-H. Promoting a combination of the proactive, educational, whole career, whole environment, and whole person approaches, the framework is structured as having interrelated parts addressing questions: where (changes in the contexts), when (ages, career stages), what (athletes’ needs and potential working issues), who (support providers), why (philosophy shared by the stakeholders), and how (forms of services) of psychological support. The authors further reflect on the CPS-H and its implementation and provide general and stage-specific recommendations for support providers. Although the CPS-H is contextualized in a specific sport and culture, some lessons can be applicable across countries and sport boarders. © 2020 The Author(s). • Cognitive behavioral intervention in sport psychology : A case illustration of the exposure method with an elite athlete
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sport Psychology in Action. - : Routledge. - 2152-0704 .- 2152-0712. ; 8:3, s. 152-162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One common method in Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) to treat anxiety problems is exposure, but there are few articles examining its applicability to sport. The aim of this article is to give a background of the use of exposure in sport and present a case of how exposure can be used with athletes. The athlete was a 17-year-old female cross-country skier with high levels of performance anxiety. In the case description, common procedures in CBT such as behavioral analysis, psychoeducation, and exposure are presented, as well as how anxiety can be managed. After the intervention the athlete perceived lower levels of anxiety as well as improved behavioral repertoire (e.g., less avoidant behaviors and more functional sport-specific behaviors). This case may be used to help practitioners consider the use of exposure in competitive sports.

  • Is there an upside of vulnerability in sport? : A mindfulness approach applied in the pursuit of psychological strength
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sport Psychology in Action. - : Taylor & Francis. - 2152-0704 .- 2152-0712. ; 10:4, s. 220-226
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article proposes a strength-based approach to vulnerability. Moreover, a mindfulness-based self-reflection intervention designed to enhance well-being and sustainability in high-performance coaches is described. The intervention organically uncovered the potential value and upside of vulnerability. Furthermore, in this article we highlight some of the recent criticisms and progress within the area of psychological strengths, before encouraging the reader to consider the value of self-awareness for exploring a more comprehensive understanding of vulnerability beyond its traditional association with weakness. We conclude with a suggested definition of the upside of vulnerability and invite practitioners and researchers alike to consider this within their work.

  • Starting a Conversation about Vulnerability in Elite Sport
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sport Psychology in Action. - : Routledge. - 2152-0704 .- 2152-0712. ; 15:1, s. 19-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Psychological strengths are idealized in elite sport and contribute to the presence of stigma surrounding mental health issues and a high threshold for help-seeking behavior. Recently, scholars have argued that the concept of vulnerability has the potential to challenge the dominance of the performance narrative in sport. In this article, we provide practitioners with innovative poem and word cloud resources based on insights from high-performance coaches to enable conversations about vulnerability in sport. We hope practitioners will use these resources to stimulate reflection and dialogue about vulnerability, which may lower thresholds for help-seeking and foster sustainability in sport organizations.

  • What counts as ”Evidence” in Evidence-Based practice? Searching for some fire behind all the smoke
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sport Psychology in Action. - Philadelphia, PA : Routledge. - 2152-0704 .- 2152-0712. ; 7:1, s. 11-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Some sorts of “evidence” in evidence-based practice seem to carry more weight (e.g., randomized controlled trials; RCTs) than others (e.g., case studies) in applied sport and exercise psychology research. In this article we explore some of the shibboleths of evidence-based treatment, and how some “gold standards,” such as RCTs (as they are often used or misused) may, when sub-optimally executed, provide only tenuous, incomplete, and confounded evidence for what we choose to do in practice. We inquire into the relevance and meaningfulness of practitioner-evacuated research and investigations that use flawed statistical reasoning, and we also ask a central question in evaluating evidence: just because some sorts of positive changes can be measured and counted in various treatment outcome research, do they really “count?” © 2016 Association for Applied Sport Psychology

  • Practitioners’ reflections of working with the Mindfulness-Acceptance-Commitment (MAC) approach in team sport settings
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sport Psychology in Action. - Philadelphia, PA : Taylor & Francis. - 2152-0704 .- 2152-0712. ; 11:2, s. 92-102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article was to describe the implementation of a team-based MAC intervention, and discuss important aspects to consider when implementing the MAC protocol in elite team sports. The MAC program contains seven modules in which core concepts such as mindfulness, acceptance, and values-driven behavior are being taught and practiced. We experienced conceptual as well as practical challenges in the application of the MAC protocol. A general recommendation in implementing MAC concepts and exercises for teams is to make the content of the program sport-specific.

  • A Mindfulness- and Acceptance-Based Intervention for Injured Athletes
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sport Psychology in Action. - : Routledge. - 2152-0704 .- 2152-0712.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to describe a mindfulness- and acceptance-based intervention as it can be applied to athletes recovering from an acute injury. The intervention consists of two parts: (a) a web-based program where athletes are asked to engage in regular formal mindfulness practices, and (b) four sessions with a practitioner. The content of the intervention is described thoroughly, and I provide recommendations for practitioners who want to intervene with this group of athletes. A central point is to adapt the content of the intervention specifically to the rehabilitation context.

  • Judging and regulating force in sports : the psychophysical scale as a tool for putting shots
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sport Psychology in Action. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2152-0704 .- 2152-0712. ; 6, s. 154-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In many sports it is highly important to attain skills to judge and regulate the perceived force needed for the execution of motor actions. In the present paper it is emphasized that, while more research on these issues is sorely needed, there are psychophysical methods available to handle force. The putting shot in golf is used as an example, and it is shown how one of the psychophysical scales, the Borg CR100 scale®, functions in laboratory as well as field conditions. Detailed recommendations to players, instructors, and sport psychology practitioners are given for how to use the Borg scale in practice and in games, and it is concluded that such a scale is likely to be useful in many other sports as well.
