  • Social media and trust : a systematic literature review
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business and Economics. - : Academic Star. - 2155-7950. ; 6:3, s. 517-524
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The role of trust has long been acknowledged among economists and political scientists. It is often argued that high levels of trust among people help promote democratization, economic activity, well-performing institutions and low levels of violence. Social media has been identified as a significant vehicle in fostering social connections however the depth and significance of these connections to the creation of trust has not been well developed. According to Robert Putnam trust derives from reciprocity that is learned only in cooperation with others. Putnam is skeptical of a positive relationship between trust and digitalized social media. According to Uslaner trust is a moral issue established by family relationships early in life and therefore use of social media has no impact on creating trust. This paper is a structured literature review. The aim is to investigate if trust can be created by connections on digitalized social media. Eight articles emphasized a positive relationship between social media and trust; two articles claimed no relationship between trust and social media. We did not find any studies claiming there is a negative relation between social media and trust.

  • Big Data use in performance measurement and management : a call for action
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business and Economics. - : Academic Star Publishing Company. - 2155-7950. ; 7:3, s. 402-417
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Big Data is starting to permeate the field of performance measurement and management. With data being referred to as the “new oil of the 21st century” and organizations more and more striving for utilizing this to their advantage, the notion of Big Data has become a hallmark for the modern decision maker. We argue that albeit promising for performance measurement and management, there are several aspects that need to be addressed within research. This paper builds on a literature review of extant research, and, a case study, and raises issues that if left unchecked could have negative impacts on the field of performance measurement and management. Despite the many positive aspects associated with Big Data, there is a need for a sound, critical perspective. The findings are discussed in relation to the three Vs regarded as the core definition of Big Data (volume, variety and velocity) and illustrated by a case study.

  • Global corporate governance - The maelstrom of increased complexity : is it possible to learn to ride the dragon?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business and Economics. - : Academic Star Publishing Company. - 2155-7950. ; 7:3, s. 425-437
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the light of recent corporate scandals company failure is usually explained based on agency theory, leading to the conclusion that corporate boards and regulators must use agency theory to control management better. The authors use institutional theory to problematize this advice. We identify the role of accounting as to give predictability, hence preventing company failure. But this predictability can be questioned; it implies stability. Albeit partly with circumstantial evidence, we question this stability with factors making the conditions for management decision-making volatile, as explained by antecedents, and leading to unmanageable entities. The implications of this volatility have consequences for corporate governance, and question the going-concern assumption, the basis of accounting.Hence, from the dominant explanations that corrupt management, or management with different interests than the principal, leads to company failure, we evolve another chain of cause and effect: volatility, with company failure as a result. It is argued that traditional accounting rituals are unsuitable for many companies. The paper indicates a need for de-institutionalization and reconsidering of accounting practices, and particularly the fundamental assumption of going concern.

  • Perspectives of Authenticity - Football Supporters’ Perceptions of New Arenas
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business and Economics. - 2155-7950. ; 7:4, s. 570-591
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • It has long been established that there is a strong relationship between football supporters and their football clubs based on family and local ties, with parallels being drawn between the supporters and the emerging concept of working consumers. This emergence of “working consumers” and its ramifications has brought the supporters’ role and its perception of authenticity under scrutiny. The purpose of this study is to describe authenticity in relation to the increasing commercialization of sport from a loyal working consumer perspective. The sample of commercialization was based on three football clubs in Stockholm that changed arenas in 2013. Data was collected using qualitative methods in supporter communities and by conducting interviews with supporters. When the data was thematically analysed it was found that the change of arena weakened the authenticity primarily in the physical link to the arena, which contains local ties, history, traditions and memories. Nevertheless, the impact of commercialization is regulated since authenticity is not entirely objective, but dependent on the beholder’s earlier experiences. The main contribution, summarized in six propositions is that supporters’ perceive authenticity when they are involved as working consumers in the club.

  • Career Crafting: Working during the Ages of 69-75 Years
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business and Economics. - 2155-7950. ; 7:8, s. 1334-1345
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to examine successful participation in working life in the ages of 69-75 years. A further aim was to elucidate socioeconomic and psychological processes surrounding successful participation. Focus groups were used to collect the data, and seven different focus groups met in four different towns in the western region of Sweden. Each group consisted of five to eight participants, and the groups met two to four times each to allow the participants to develop recollections and reflections on the topic. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. It was found that from middle age onwards the participants transformed their working lives and created their ideal professional situations. This process took place in a context of embracing social support and large psychological resources. These findings suggest structural facilitation of career crafting in work life and working conditions that can reinforce psychological resources such as positive affect and continuous learning throughout one’s working life.
