  • Exploring self-loyalty in the context of social acceleration : Theorising loyalties as emotions and resistance
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Political Power. - London : Taylor & Francis Group. - 2158-379X .- 2158-3803. ; 10:2, s. 133-148
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is a theoretical exploration of a layer of loyalty called self-loyalty. We define self-loyalty as an emotion that is channelled through social forms. To show the usage and relevance of the concept we present social acceleration as a contextualisation. Two self-loyalty strategies in relation to acceleration are discussed: a voluntary form based on resistance and an involuntary form based on acceptance and 'playing the game'.

  • The ABC of resistance: towards a new analytical framework
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Political Power. - 2158-379X .- 2158-3803. ; 16:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two significant developments – (1) the rapidly changing world order, and (2) significant gaps in current social science scholarship – call for a further exploration of resistance theories. In this paper, we identify some of the gaps and inconsistencies within the current bulk of research, and seek to contribute to the understanding of resistance, its applications and complexity. In short, this paper discusses three interacting and supporting forms of resistance, including various overlaps and interlinkages between them, which together constitute what we would like to call the ABC of resistance; that is, avoidance resistance, breaking resistance, and constructive resistance.

  • Power and future people’s freedom : intergenerational domination, climate change, and constitutionalism
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Political Power. - 2158-379X .- 2158-3803. ; 9:2, s. 289-307
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Intergenerational domination is the idea that future people’s freedom is violated insofar as they are vulnerable to the capacity of the people living before them to interfere. This paper explores the extent to which intergenerational domination applies to two familiar phenomena: climate change and constitutionalism. The first part of the paper argues that the emission of greenhouse gases does not amount to intergenerational domination. Being hurt by climate change does not equal subjection to the capacity of previous generations to interfere. The second part argues that intergenerational domination is under certain conditions applicable to the relationship exemplified by political constitutionalism. Hence, this study shows that constitutional provisions introduced in order to protect future generations from climate change is more likely to contribute to rather than to protect them from intergenerational domination.

  • Memorialisation and its denial: slow resistance through derealisation in Kiruna, Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Political Power. - 2158-379X .- 2158-3803. ; 16:2, s. 158-176
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper demonstrates the role that Judith Butler’s concept of derealisation has to play in the analysis of slow and structural violence within extractivism. I deploy derealisation to examine the denial of public mourning and memorialisation of the evacuated and ruined former city centre of Kiruna, Sweden, by the mining company LKAB. Kiruna is home to the largest underground iron-ore mine in the world. The ore-body extends over two kilometres directly below Kiruna. As a result of ongoing mining practices threatening the stability of the city, Kiruna is currently in the process of a 20-year resettlement. By contrasting the roles of enforced silence and silence as a means of creating a collective, often counter-hegemonic narrative, I highlight the bifurcated roles silence plays in Kiruna, speaking to the simultaneity of structural violence and the emergence of resistance as slow. Resistance here is argued to be emergent in the desire for my informants to collectively memorialise the ruination of the Deformation Zone, the former city centre now owned by LKAB. The fieldwork for this research was conducted ethnographically in Kiruna between September 2020 and August 2021, using semi- and un-structured interviews and an abductive approach.

  • Black hole indigeneity: the explosion and implosion of radical difference as resistance and power in Andean Bolivia
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Political Power. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2158-379X .- 2158-3803. ; 13:2, s. 179-200
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the coming to power of Evo Morales and el Movimiento al Socialismo, an indigenized language of resistance became the language of power. In this paper I explore how epistemological and ontological 'radical difference' was co-opted and used to legitimize Bolivian state power. I argue that when institutionalized and instrumentalized within the state apparatus, indigeneity - as an emancipatory device of radical difference - implodes on itself and its radical potential is lost in the black hole that is coloniality. This paper provides an analytical and historical horizon against which recent political events in Bolivia can be understood.

  • Telic power and its applications
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Political Power. - 2158-379X .- 2158-3803. ; 16:1, s. 47-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • I introduce a newly identified form of power: telic power. While deontic power is a key concept in social ontology, it is too narrow to capture a central dimension of the social world. I introduce and define the previously overlooked concept of telic power, offering two justifications for this new concept. First, it captures a distinct and central dimension of the social world that has previously been neglected due to the one-sided use of examples and a consequent emphasis on deontic power. Second, it is theoretically useful because telic power can both conflict with and reinforce our deontic powers.
