  • A methodology of loving kindness : how interpersonal neurobiology, compassion, and transference can inform researcher–participant encounters and storytelling
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health. - Abingdon, Oxon : Routledge. - 2159-676X .- 2159-6778. ; 8:1, s. 1-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article concerns some central aspects of methodology in qualitative research: the participants’ and investigators’ storytelling, and the main instruments in many interview-based qualitative studies, the researchers themselves. We discuss several ethical and interpersonal aspects of qualitative research encounters between investigators and their interviewee participants. Interviewing research participants is a fundamentally exploitative process, and we make suggestions for how we can temper that exploitation by giving something of value back to our participants and to make sure the well-being of the participant is not compromised by our actions. Many research topics in qualitative studies concern experiences of stress, distress and trauma, and interviewees re-telling their stories may become retraumatised. Such retraumatisation constitutes abuse on the part of the researcher. To counter potential abuse and exploitation, we discuss how researchers, as the central instruments in interview-based investigations, can use knowledge of interpersonal neurobiology, psychodynamic theory and mindful practice to enable them to hold their participants (and their participants’ stories) in loving care and maybe even help in healing processes. © 2015 Taylor & Francis

  • An elite athlete’s storying of injuries and non-qualification for an Olympic Games : A socio-narratological case study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health. - : Routledge. - 2159-676X .- 2159-6778. ; 11:5, s. 687-703
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we present and examine the case of one elite athlete – 28-year old Mark (pseudonym), who during a 10-month lead-up to the 2016 Rio OG qualification deadline, aimed to achieve his NGB/NOC’s qualification standards, but sustained several injuries and was forced to give up his qualification attempt. Adopting a socio-narratological framework, we aim to understand how Mark storied the qualification period; how socio-cultural, organisational, and biographical contexts complicated his qualification and how he handled these complications; and how he made sense of not qualifying. Based on data produced through a longitudinal prospective study that included a background questionnaire, three semi-structured interviews, a weekly web survey, a training observation, and a compilation of competition results, our socio-narratological interpretations evidence that Mark aligned his athletic life to the ‘sport performance investment narrative’, but that this narrative provided limited resources to story poor competitive results and injuries. Instead, as Mark faced unexpected disruptions, he adopted a number of restitution strategies (e.g. alternative training/competition plans; positive thinking; rehabilitation) to re-align to the performance narrative. In so doing, Mark compromised injury recovery to worsen his performance and further injure his body, which eventually stopped his qualification process. After a directionless period and personal suffering, Mark again intended to follow the performance investment narrative. We propose that coaches, support staff and sport organisations recognise the pressurised nature of a qualification phase and provide support strategies to moderate instability and possible non-qualification.

  • Sink or swim : career narratives of two African American athletes from underserved communities in the United States
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health. - Abingdon : Routledge. - 2159-676X .- 2159-6778. ; 13:6, s. 904-919
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this study was to explore the career narratives of professional athletes from underserved communities in the United States. Two African American athletes (named Marcus and Imari for the study), who both met the criteria of playing at least one year in a professional league and spending their formative years in an underserved community, participated in this study. Life story interviews lasting about two hours were explored through the principles of narrative analysis, focusing on both content and structure. Each participant constructed a sink or swim narrative typology termed risk, descent, and gain that focused more on the environmental context in an underserved community than their athletic development, which opposes the performance narrative often depicted by professional athletes. Although the contextualised nature of risk manifested differently for Marcus and Imari, their life courses both reflected low points precipitated by risky decisions or circumstances followed by gainful moments ultimately culminating in professional contracts. The analysis also uncovered the realities and challenges associated with having the intersecting identity of being a poor, Black aspiring athlete in a racially charged atmosphere. Finally, the athletes’ perceptions of how their challenging formative development influenced their professional career pathway as well as the ramifications of sink or swim narratives in popular American culture are considered. © 2020, © 2020 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

  • Narrative research in sport and exercise science in the early 21 st century : a state-of-the-art critical review
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health. - Abingdon : Routledge. - 2159-676X .- 2159-6778.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aims of this review were to: 1) offer a comprehensive analysis ofnarrative research in sport and exercise sciences since the beginning ofthe 21st century, 2) enhance conceptual clarity and methodologicalrigour, and 3) identify new avenues of potential narrative exploration. Following an extensive search across two databases (i.e. Sportdiscus andPsychinfo) and a targeted manual search, 77 research papers were used toprovide an overview of narrative research, highlighting data collectionand analysis methods, participants, findings, significant contributions, aswell as the narrative themes and types. Our analytic process, drawing fromthe traditions of narrative analysis, showcased how narrative research hasbeen conducted and its revelations in sport and exercise sciences. Theanalysis uncovered that 51 articles had aims in three primary areas: 1)meaning and identity construction, 2) disability and/or impairment, and 3)athletic career pathways and/or in-career transitions. Additionally, 51articles identified narrative types, with the performance (N = 26), relational(N = 12), and restitution (N = 8) types appearing most frequently. Whilethis review reveals commonalities linking narrative research in sport andexercise sciences, many gaps and future challenges were also identified.Primarily, we recommend that narrative researchers: 1) be more consistentin their language to prevent confusion and misunderstandings, 2) differ-entiate between narratives and stories more clearly, 3) analyse the contentand/or structure of stories, 4) expand research on exercise, health, andphysical activity, 5) include participants from diverse cultural and non-Western contexts, 6) explore narrative characters, and 7) investigate theperformance narrative type in applied settings.

  • Exploring the role of digital tools in running : The meaning-making of user-generated data in a social networking site
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health. - : Routledge. - 2159-676X .- 2159-6778. ; 9:1, s. 18-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study is to examine how runners make meaning of digital tools in the dialogues published on a social networking site (SNS) created by and for runners who choose to run alone. The study explores the digital data generated by the runners using global positioning systems, such as how many kilometres have been covered, the average pace, the geographical location, the total climb, health information related to pulse rate and the number of calories burned. Some runners share this kind of data when publishing postings on the SNS. The empirical data consists of published postings of visual graphs and photographs with comments in threads retrieved from the online archives. A transactional approach and practical epistemology analysis are employed to focus on and analyse the meaning-making processes that are located in the social practices that the runners create when participating online. The participants make meaning of digital tools (such as sport watches and associated apps) by: (1) sharing details about their running performances, (2) signalling their presence in the social network of lone runners and (3) planning running events. Digital information is primarily used to reinforce the runners’ identity formation. The meaning-making of digital tools thus becomes a way of highlighting an individual’s social affinity to a runners’ collective. Surprisingly, lone runners do not use the performance-related feedback and health information offered by the digital tools to enhance their running progress when participating in the SNS.

  • Sustainable elite sport : Swedish athletes' voices of sustainability in athletics
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health. - Abingdon : Routledge. - 2159-676X .- 2159-6778. ; 13:5, s. 727-742
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Elite sport is a precarious context and as athletes are pushing their physical and mental boundaries to enhance performance, consequences can be devastating. In contrast to arguments that elite sport cannot be sustainable, some scholars have argued that with certain considerations and precautions, elite sport can have fewer unsustainable consequences. However, the current literature has missed to capture athletes' voices regarding sustainability in elite sport. Therefore, this article aims to give voice to athletes and their needs and concerns regarding sustainable elite sport and through this, to extend the existing elite sport sustainability conceptualisation with knowledge from the athlete perspective. Focus-group interviews were conducted with 15 high performance athletes. The findings suggest that athletes need athlete-centred coaching, focus on holistic perspectives, and co-creation of their overall development. However, athletes also seem to adapt and accept commodity structures, as their focus on results overrules most aspects regarding long-term health and well-being.

  • Health resources, ageing and physical activity : a study of physically active women aged 69–75 years
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health. - : Routledge. - 2159-676X .- 2159-6778. ; 10:2, s. 206-222
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most studies on issues relating to ageing, physical activity and health are based on an understanding of what causes illness, rather than what promotes health. The health benefits of physical activity relate to questions about how to avoid physical inactivity and overcoming barriers to participating in physical activity, rather than why older people continue to be physically active. The aim of this study was to explore health resources in relation to physical activity, especially resistance training, that physically active women between the ages of 69–75 years characterise as important for the maintenance of health. In order to investigate these health resources, the study drew on salutogenic theory and the concept of sense of coherence. The analysed data came from interviews with 14 physically active Swedish women aged 69–75 years who had previously taken part in a resistance training intervention, but who also had continued to engage in physical activity and resistance training when the intervention ended. We identified seven health resources, social relations and care, positive energy, self-worth, capability in and about physical activity, the habit of exercising, identity as an exercising person and womanhood related to physical activity, in this case resistance training, that physically active women aged between 69 and 75 years characterised as important for maintaining their health. In conclusion, physical activity carried out in a stable group of peers provided a meaningful, comprehensible and manageable way for these older women to engage in the on-going process of maintaining health.

  • The junior to senior transition : a narrative analysis of the pathways of two Swedish athletes
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health. - Abingdon : Taylor & Francis Group. - 2159-676X .- 2159-6778. ; 11:3, s. 284-298
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are as many careers with various pathways as there are athletes, and the interest in the junior-to-senior transition (JST) stems from its particular importance for athletes’ lives when aiming for the senior elite levels of their sports. This study is a follow-up of the quantitative longitudinal study that investigated the JST process in Swedish sport club athletes. The aim of this study was to explore two athletes’ (pseudonyms Erik, the swimmer, and Jessika, the tennis player) JST transition pathways, emphasising psychosocial factors that were perceived as facilitating and debilitating the transition process. Narrative-type interviews were conducted, and the stories were analysed using the holistic-form structural analysis. The analysis provided a central storyline (performance narrative) that is similar for both athletes, and two side storylines: Erik’s effort and relationship narrative and Jessika’s injury and reorientation narrative. They shared psychosocial factors that were perceived as facilitating the transition process, including family, coaches and sport club environment. For Erik, the debilitating factors were the negative changes in the group and a poor relationship with the new coach. The debilitating factors that influenced Jessika’s JST were the decrease/loss of financial support and the challenge of facing younger opponents against whom she felt she shouldn’t lose when making a comeback after an injury. After the JST, both Erik and Jessika changed their tracks in life, terminated their athletic careers and focused on pursuing higher education qualifications. © 2018, © 2018 The Author(s). • Development of a clinical sport projective assessment method : the Athlete Apperception Technique (AAT)
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health. - Abingdon : Routledge. - 2159-676X .- 2159-6778. ; 9:1, s. 33-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Within the field of applied sport psychology, there is an increasing appreciation for diversity of training models, research methodologies, and therapeutic approaches. For example, psychodynamic formulations and interpretations have begun to appear more frequently in the sport psychology literature. In keeping with emerging psychodynamic viewpoints, we believe the time is right to introduce a qualitative sport-specific projective instrument: the Athlete Apperception Technique (AAT). The AAT represents a new technique based on psychodynamic theory and established projective test construction principles. It was designed primarily as a clinical tool for practitioners and not as an instrument for quantitative research into personality. It does, however, have potential research applications, especially in clinical sport case study research and narrative analysis investigations. The AAT produces an idiographic understanding of athletes’ characteristics, anxieties, and motivations (both conscious and unconscious). We briefly review the literature on the development of projective techniques, explain the rationale underlying the development of the AAT, and present three sequential studies to explain the AAT image selection procedures that led to the final product. © 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
