  • Poisoning Casualties: Alcohol, Pharmaceuticals or “Legal Highs”? : Poisoning Cases at Emergency Rooms in The Swedish County Värmland in 2007-2013
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Community Medicine & Health Education. - : Omics publishing group. - 2161-0711. ; 5:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The growing number of novel psychoactive substances (NPS), also labelled as “legal highs”, constitutes a challenge to public health. It is uncertain whether this trend is related to the increase in number of poising cases reported by emergency rooms. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of NPS in acute cases of poisoning in the Swedish county Värmland. The numbers of NPS casualties were correlated with poisoning by other substances. Both, the gender and age distribution of the reported cases were recorded.Method: Records classified as poisoning casualties at the emergency rooms in Värmland during 2007- 2013 were collected and analyzed. Results: NPS and illicit drugs constituted only a small part (1.67% and 7.84% respectively) of the total poisoning casualties. The results also revealed that alcohol and pharmaceuticals were present in the majority of cases (91.2%), and were to a larger extent involved in polydrug abuse and suicide attempts. Furthermore, the results uncovered an alarming poisoning problem among women who had taken pharmaceuticals and for suicidal young people. Conclusions: It is unclear whether the comparatively low prevalence of NPS and illicit drug related poisoning casualties reflect the real prevalence of injury cases or a possible under-reporting.

  • The Impact of the Migration on Psychosocial Well-Being: A Study of Kurdish Refugees in Resettlement Country
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: J Community Med Health Educ. - : OMICS Publishing Group. - 2161-0711. ; 4:2, s. 1-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract The aim of the present study was twofold: 1) to investigate how pre-migration, migration and post-migration factors have an impact on the mental well-being of Kurdish refugees settled in Sweden, and 2) to examine the relation between pre-migration experiences and post-migration well-being. Objective:To study Kurdish immigrants’ mental well-being in the resettlement country with respect to migration process. Method: Data was collected through group interviews with Kurdish refugees (n=17), eight women and nine men, aged 38-59 years. A qualitative content analysis method was used to analyse the interview texts. Results: Kurdish refugees reported a number of difficulties and dramatic experiences related to the migration process. Discrimination, fear and anxiety, uncertainty about future and powerlessness were some of the common factors reported by the participants. The process of the migration and post-migration period were characterized by loss of social capital, language barrier, cultural diversity, alienation, social and professional regression, as well as discrimination. Immigrants, who had succeeded to obtain an occupation that was equal with, or at a higher level than their previous job in the home country, were satisfied with their lives and had better self-esteem and psychosocial well-being. Conclusion: The psychosocial well-being of Kurdish refugees in the resettlement country was associated with factors in pre-migration, migration including post-migration phases. Social and professional status in the resettlement country that matched the immigrants’ original status seemed to accompany higher psychosocial well-being. Social and professional regression was related to lower self-esteem and well-being.

  • Readiness of diabetics to use the internet and mobile services : The case of a large city in a middle-income country
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Community Medicine & Health Education. - : Omics Publishing Group. - 2161-0711. ; 5, s. 1-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To determine the potential of providing health-related services on the Internet or via mobile phones to diabetic patients in a large city in Iran, a middle-income country. Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is increasing worldwide, especially in developing countries, as a consequence of urbanisation, which is associated with risk factors for diabetes such as physical inactivity and high sugar and fat diets. The use of the Internet and mobile services is increasing worldwide. Independent use of the Internet and mobile technologies by patients could be a key step towards self-care management of DM. Methods: A two-part validated questionnaire was completed by patients who attended one of two diabetic clinics for a routine check-up. The first part consisted of 16 demographic-related items. The second part contained 26 items about the specific use of the Internet and mobile services to access information. Results: In total, 407 questionnaires were completed. The results showed that 108 (26.5%) of the respondents had routine access to the Internet, of which 95.4% had routine access to mobile services and 77.8% were positive about using an official Iranian website for medical information. However, 55% of the respondents preferred to obtain health-related information from television, radio, and educational films. Conclusions: The data suggest that the diabetic patients who used the Internet in this study were willing to receive educational material via the Internet. However, many still preferred traditional sources of health-related information. The findings indicated that our future effort in self-care management should focus on early technology adopters to increase the penetration rate of technology in the field of health care.

  • Geographical, health systems’ and sociocultural patterns of tb/hiv co-infected patients’ health seeking behavior in a conflict affected setting : the case of Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Community Medicine and Health Education. - : OMICS Publishing Group. - 2161-0711. ; 4:1, s. 1-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is one of the high burden TB countries. The country has been affected by a political conflict for more than 15 years now. HIV prevalence has been increasing in the country too. Detection and care of TB/HIV co-infected cases is a major problem in the country. Aim: This study aimed at describing patterns of health seeking behaviors among patients with TB/HIV regarding their choice of health facilities for integrated TB/HIV care in the Goma and surrounding health districts. Methods: The methods used included a cross-sectional descriptive survey with TB/HIV co-infected patients and qualitative interviews of health workers. Results: The study found that geographical residence did not play a major role in choice of facility for care by patients infected with TB and HIV. Many patients shun facilities which are close and seek care relatively far away. Instead of geographical proximity, availability of drugs and welcoming attitudes determined the choice of integrated care facilities. Also, fear for discrimination and stigmatization in the community result into patients in this area concealing their infection; rather, they claim being victim of empoisoning. Conclusion: Sustained decentralization of integrated TB/HIV services through better programs’ coordination and community involvement to address misconceptions about TB and HIV and stigmatization are essential to promote uptake of TB/HIV services and retain patients in treatment.

  • Student and Parental Perceptions of School-Based Body Mass Index Screening and Notification
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Community Medicine & Health Education. - 2161-0711. ; S2:009
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To address the childhood obesity epidemic, school-based body mass index (BMI) screening and surveillance is proposed or mandated in 30 states. We examined parent and student perceptions of school-based measuring and reporting in an ethnically diverse school district in Madras, Oregon, USA. Four broad themes emerged from focus groups held separately with parents and students. Students generally expressed a neutral opinion of BMI measurement. Parents felt that they held primary responsibility for their child’s weight. Parents and students perceived BMI notification as important; however, BMI reporting did not widely serve as an impetus for physician involvement or self-reported behavior change. Perceived barriers to behavior change included the lack of a supportive environment, poor access to healthcare, cultural issues, lack of concern over childhood overweight or a minimizing of health risks associated with overweight and poor understanding of the BMI graph and accompanied reporting of health information. Notification letters had limited effectiveness in this community.
