  • Aesthetics and ephemerality : observing and preserving the luxury brand
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: California Management Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 0008-1256 .- 2162-8564. ; 52:1, s. 45-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While luxury brands are one of the most profitable and fastest growing segments of the brand pantheon, they are the least understood. There is no established definition as to what a luxury brand is; no clear understanding of the value dimensionality of luxury brands; and no rigorous conceptualization of the different types of luxury brands. They are generally treated as homogenous. Little wonder the management of these brands is shrouded in mystery. This article explores the value dimensionality of luxury brands, differentiates among luxury brands, and proposes a typology to help firms understand the managerial implications and challenges of each type. All luxury brands are not the same-they can mean different things to different people or even different things to the same people, which makes target marketing of luxury brands both difficult and important. This also means that they react differently to each other both in times of economic prosperity and in downturns. This article also explores strategies for migrating mass-market brands into luxury brand markets.

  • CGIP : MANAGING CONSUMER-GENERATED INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: California Management Review. - : UNIV CALIF. - 0008-1256 .- 2162-8564. ; 57:4, s. 43-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two related trends characterize the recent past: value propositions are migrating from the physical to the informational, and value creation is shifting from firms to consumers. These two trends meet in the phenomenon of "consumer-generated intellectual property" (CGIP). This article addresses the question: "How should firms manage the intellectual property that their customers create?" It explores how CGIP presents important dilemmas for managers and argues that consumers' "intellectual property" should not be leveraged at the expense of their "emotional property." It integrates these perspectives into a diagnostic framework and discusses eight strategies for firms to manage CGIP.

  • Digital Platform Grafting: Strategies for Entering Established Ecosystems
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: California Management Review. - 2162-8564 .- 0008-1256. ; 66:3, s. 27-46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital platforms are often characterized as enablers of new ecosystems. However, platforms are sometimes introduced into pre-existing ecosystems, where a platform’s ability to harmonize with the ecosystem is critical for its success. This article draws on the case of digital healthcare platforms and introduces the concept of platform grafting, which denotes the process of integrating a new platform into a pre-existing ecosystem, leading to a coevolutionary process of adapting both the platform and the surrounding ecosystem. Dynamic capabilities are critical for successfully integrating the platform into the ecosystem, and this article provides a capabilities framework for understanding platform grafting.

  • Strategies for Digitalization in Manufacturing Firms
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: California Management Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 2162-8564 .- 0008-1256. ; 62:4, s. 17-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the digitalization efforts of 26 leading manufacturing firms, the difficulties encountered, and how they can be handled. It shows that many firms are far from ready to benefit from digitalization and are mainly focused on achieving greater efficiency through digitalization rather than pursuing a growth agenda. This imbalance is because of the difficulties related to identifying profitable configurations of competencies, assets, and data generated from digital technologies, orchestrating them, and exploiting them in an agile organization. Practical implications of digitalization are highlighted, specifically in terms of strategies for supporting the current business and embracing long-term digital transformation.

  • Getting AI Implementation Right: Insights from a Global Survey
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: California Management Review. - : University of California Press. - 2162-8564 .- 0008-1256. ; 66:1, s. 5-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While the promise of artificial intelligence (AI) is pervasive, many companies struggle with AI implementation challenges. This article presents results from a survey of 2,525 decision-makers with AI experience in China, Germany, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States—as well as interviews with 16 AI implementation experts—in order to understand the challenges companies face when implementing AI. The study covers technological, organizational, and cultural factors and identifies key challenges and solutions for AI implementation. This article develops a diagnostic framework to help executives navigate AI challenges as companies gain momentum, manage organization-wide complexities, and curate a network of partners, algorithms, and data sources to create value through AI.

  • From Preliminary Ideas to Corroborated Product Definitions : Managing the Front End of New Product Development
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: California Management Review. - Berkeley, Calif. : University of California Press. - 0008-1256 .- 2162-8564. ; 54:4, s. 20-43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Front-end activities largely influence the outcomes of new product development processes, because it is here that firms create new ideas, give them direction, and set them in motion. We show that the front end can be understood as comprising three core activities: idea/concept development, idea/concept alignment, and idea/concept legitimization, which allow firms to create corroborated product definitions. The paper provides important implications for managers interested in front-end management, and devote specific attention to the differences between incremental and radical front end development and to the front end in the light of increasingly open innovation processes.

  • Rise of the startup city : The changing geography of the venture capital financed innovation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: California Management Review. - : Sage Publications. - 0008-1256 .- 2162-8564. ; 59:1, s. 14-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The prevailing geographic model for high-technology industrial organization has been the “nerdistan,” a sprawling, car-oriented suburb organized around office parks. This seems to contradict a basic insight of urban theory, which associates dense urban centers with higher levels of innovation, entrepreneurship, and creativity. This article examines the geography of recent venture capital finance startups across U.S. metros and within a subset of them by neighborhood. It concludes that the model is changing. The suburban model might have been a historical aberration, and innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship are realigning in the same urban centers that traditionally fostered them.

  • Circular business model transformation : A roadmap for incumbent firms
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: California Management Review. - : Sage Publications. - 0008-1256 .- 2162-8564. ; 61:2, s. 5-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To achieve positive economic, environmental, and social benefits, many incumbent manufacturing firms attempt to apply circular economy principles to their business practices. However, these firms often struggle to change their existing linear business models to circular models because the steps required for successful transformation are still poorly understood. Based on a multiple case study of eight business model transformation journeys, this article proposes a roadmap for circular business model transformation. It provides a step-by-step process to enable circular transition, allowing companies to meet environmental, social, and financial objectives and proactively address sustainability.

  • Managing the intellectual property disassembly problem
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: California Management Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 2162-8564 .- 0008-1256. ; 55:4, s. 184-210
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article deals with the intellectual property (IP) disassembly problem, which is an increasingly important problem in various contexts. The IP disassembly (IPD) problem is defined as the problem of finding a contractual arrangement for allocation of IP rights and licenses that allows for separating and disintegrating a business unit, company, project entity, or IP unit in order to enable a transaction, organizational transfer, or dissolution of it. Based on a comparative case study of corporate transactions of Saab Automobile and Volvo Car Corporation this article conceptualizes and characterizes the problem and then develops an IPD framework for managing it.
