  • 5G on Board: How Many Antennas Do We Need on Connected Cars?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps), 4-8 Dec. 2016. - New York : IEEE. - 2166-0069. - 9781509024827
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mobile networks will support increasing numbers of connected vehicles. Successive generations of mobile networks have reduced the cost of data rate, in terms of spectrum usage and power consumption at the base station, by increasingly exploiting the concept of channel state information at the transmitter. Unfortunately, beyond a limiting velocity (which depends on the carrier frequency), networks are no longer cost efficient, since such information is not usable. Recently, channel prediction techniques requiring several antennas on the car roof have been introduced to solve this problem. In this paper, for the first time, we determine the most cost efficient configurations, in terms of numbers of antennas on the car roof and carrier frequency, in various scenarios (highway and dense urban). Our studies show that with a simple prediction technique based on predictor antennas, the network can use twice less spectrum and around 20 dB less power, for cars with 3 antennas on their tops than for cars with the same number of antennas and not using prediction.

  • Massive Multiple Input Massive Multiple Output for 5G Wireless Backhauling
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IEEE Globecom Workshops. - 2166-0069. - 9781538639207 ; 2018-January, s. 1-6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we propose a new technique for the future fifth generation (5G) cellular network wireless backhauling. We show that hundreds of data streams can be spatially multiplexed through a short range and line of sight "massive multiple input massive multiple output" (MMIMMO) propagation channel thanks to a new low complexity spatial multiplexing scheme, called "block discrete Fourier transform based spatial multiplexing with maximum ratio transmission" (B-DFT-SM-MRT). Its performance in real and existing environments is assessed using ray-tracing tools and advanced antenna models. 1.6 kbits/s/Hz of spectral efficiency is attained, corresponding to 80% of Singular Value Decomposition performance, with a transmitter and a receiver that are 200 and 10,000 times less complex, respectively.

  • Frame Structure Design for Future Millimetre Wave Mobile Radio Access
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps), 4-8 Dec. 2016. - 2166-0069.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 5th generation cellular systems will extend the operation to above 6 GHz to meet extreme data rate requirements. This sets new requirements for the air interface design. In this paper, we propose several frame structure solutions from the mmMAGIC project [1], which address the challenges of using higher carrier frequencies. These solutions include subframe structures for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and filter-bank multicarrier modulation (FBMC), demodulation reference signal (DMRS) design, backhauling, synchronization signal design and beam measurement reference signal design. Further research is being conducted to refine the overall frame structure solution.

  • Evaluation of Waveforms for Mobile Radio Communications Above 6 GHz
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps), 4-8 Dec. 2016. - 2166-0069.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper provides a high level comparison of several multi-carrier and single-carrier waveforms based on the evaluations performed in mmMAGIC project. The waveforms are assessed for the performance indicators that are relevant to mobile radio communication above 6 GHz, specially the millimeter wave frequencies. The evaluations are performed in mmMAGIC waveform simulators under common assumptions on carrier frequencies, waveform parameters, channel and impairment models. The evaluation results reveal that OFDM is suitable for above 6 GHz communication. For above ↑30 GHz communication, OFDM with PAPR reduction and DFTS-OFDM are both promising options. Moreover, some potential enhancements to OFDM (use of window/pulse shape, subband filters, unique word, zero tailing), parametrization of FBMC, and constrained envelop continuous phase modulation for above 6 GHz communication have been discussed.

  • Impact of Major RF Impairments on mm-Wave Communications Using OFDM Waveforms
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps), 4-8 Dec. 2016. - 2166-0069.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we study the joint impact of three major RF im-pairments, namely, oscillator phase noise, power amplifier non-linearity and I/Q imbalance on the performance of a mm-wave communication link based on OFDM modulation. General im-pairment models are first derived for describing the joint effects in each TX, each RX as well as a mm-wave communication link. Based on the obtained signal models and initial air interface de-sign from the mmMAGIC project, we numerically evaluate the impact of RF impairments on channel estimation in terms of channel-to-noise ratio (CNR) and also channel fluctuation due to common phase error (CPE) caused by phase noise within the channel coherence time. Then the impact on the link performance in terms of maximum sum rate is evaluated using extensive com-puter simulations. The simulation results show that the used air interface design is generally robust to the presence of RF impair-ments. With regard to the use of high order modulation alphabet and implementation of low-power and low-cost RF transceivers in mm-wave communication, special attention needs to be paid on phase noise where the inter-carrier-interference (ICI) can become a major limiting factor.
