  • Enabling the diffusion of sustainable product innovations in BIM library platforms
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Innovation Management. - : University of Porto. - 2183-0606. ; 7:4, s. 106-130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Building Information Modelling (BIM) objects represent building products in design, simulation, and procurement processes. This paper explores how BIM objects could be created and exchanged to enable the diffusion of innovative products with enhanced sustainability performance. Two BIM library platforms were examined by taking a new approach that integrates the concepts of sustainable value, diffusion of innovations, information, software usability, and platform ecosystems. The findings show that the diffusion of sustainable products can be inhibited due to problems with the mechanisms for creating and exchanging BIM objects, quality of BIM objects, the usability of BIM library platforms, and participation on the platforms. This study deepens an understanding of the problems by focusing on ventilation products in Sweden. Identified shortcomings in the current practices of BIM platform owners and participants could be reduced by effective platform strategies, certification schemes for BIM objects, and BIM object creation processes integrated with product lifecycle management.

  • Mobile payments : A proposal for a context-oriented approach based on socio-technical system theory
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Innovation Management. - : Universidade do Porto - Faculdade de Engenharia. - 2183-0606. ; 6:3, s. 40-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A recent review of mobile payment research by Dahlberg et al. (2015) concludes that there is a need to synthesise this research area by studying contexts in which innovation is carried out and to integrate different aspects of research. This article aims to provide a proposal for how to achieve such integration and context orientation by building on previous studies and offering an additional review. Our systematic literature review of mobile payments research is focused on papers published during 2006–2016. The main objective is to examine how mobile payments research has been conducted from the methodological and theoretical perspectives. Our findings show that research on mobile payments is a multidisciplinary research. Three main themes in the research (in line with previous studies) are customer adoption, technological aspects, and business aspects. Moreover, research is mainly analytical based on a deductive approach. To meet the challenge formulated in the previous research, we propose and apply a socio-technical system framework to achieve synthesis and context-specific consideration in future research on mobile payments.

  • The Importance of Taking a Process Perspective on the Use and Application of an Innovation Management Self-Assessment Audit
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Innovation Management. - : Helena Blackbright. - 2183-0606. ; 7:4, s. 47-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Prior research on innovation management self-assessment audits (IMSA) has a strong focus on the assessment situation, primarily on what to assess. However, several additional tasks are necessary to make purposeful use of an IMSA. This study analyzes the undertaking of an IMSA from a process perspective to better understand IMSA’s utilization by looking at how people participate in the process and how the process is integrated in an organizational context. This study adopted an interactive research approach and collected data over a period of 27 months in 45 interviews, six workshops, and 10 meetings with 42 different participants from three companies. Results show a fragmented participation, and that the process was only partly integrated into the organizational context, making it arbitrarily dependent on individual actors. This demonstrates the need to understand challenges related to IMSA use to enable a process that is integrated in the structures intended to be improved.

  • Generating Customer Insights in Mid-sized B2B Companies: Integrative Review and Future Research Directions
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Innovation Management. - : Association Journal of Innovation Management (Associação Journal of Innovation Management) - NIPC 514006935. - 2183-0606 .- 2183-0606. ; 9:4, s. 1-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Mid-sized businesses (MSB) and particularly mid-sized B2B businesses (MSB2B) are often overlooked by scholars researching innovation management. However, MSBs are very important for the economy worldwide, and their growth depends on the developments of new products. The early identification and consideration of customers’ hidden needs are crucial for the successful development of new, differentiated products in MSBs. Techniques that can be used to generate customer insights are often referred to by the term voice of the customer (VOC). However, extant research on the value of VOC techniques is ambiguous, making it difficult for MSBs to decide which techniques may be most useful. This issue is compounded by MSBs having limited resources and limited knowledge about these techniques. Similarly, awareness of best practices for identifying customer needs is lacking, particularly as they relate to different types of innovation projects and different project stages. This integrative review clarifies these issues for MSB2Bs. Based on an analysis of the limited research on techniques for revealing hidden needs in MSB2Bs, practical, actionable recommendations are provided, including suggestions for which hidden needs techniques are most useful for MSB2Bs and best practices in this area. Future research directions are identified, and managerial implications for industrial product innovation in MSB2Bs are discussed. © Oruc M., Batirel A., Trabulus S., 2022. All rights reserved.

  • Towards a management system standard for innovation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Innovation Management. - : University of Porto. - 2183-0606. ; 9:1, s. XI-XIX
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this letter is to provide background and rationale for developing a management system standard to further the profession of innovation management. A systems approach is not new; however, the ISO 56002 Innovation management system - guidance standard is providing a common language and framework for building an innovation capability. The letter describes the innovation management principles and the system elements. We have heard that even having a standard for innovation management is an oxymoron. The publication of ISO 56002 in 2019 has triggered a broader conversation about the merits and drawbacks of a management system standard for innovation work. Some issues have been pointed out by Joe Tidd in his review and critical assessment of the standard (Tidd, 2021). As experts involved in drafting the standard, we can offer informed perspectives of this assessment by focusing on four topics related to context, innovation strategy, adaptable processes and tools, and process versus system approaches. These perspectives are ours alone and do not represent the views of the ISO Working Group. We invite the community to engage in this discussion to evolve our thinking about standardization for innovation management.

  • Are great innovations driven by utopian ideas?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Innovation Management. - : Universidade do Porto - Faculdade de Engenharia. - 2183-0606. ; 6:4, s. 98-116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Case studies of well documented, great innovations were performed with focus on their underlying, basic ideas. In retrospect, these ideas may seem obvious, but at the time of conception, they were considered utopian, here defined as imaginative, unexpected, counterintuitive, or unrealistic by most people, including experts. The build-up of the utopian ideas in each of the case studies is shortly described along with a critical analysis about their roles, importance, and risk exposure in the individual cases. The ideas were ranked according to defined criteria of importance, risk, and utopian potential, and this ranking was compared to the ranking of the overall impact of the analyzed innovations. The results suggest that the utopian idea potential correlates with the overall impact. The World Wide Web and the smartphones are prominent examples of great innovations driven by utopian ideas. The significance of these findings is discussed in view of current innovation models and in recognition of the heuristic character of the reported investigation.

  • The Appropriation of Blockchain for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Innovation Management. - : FEUP edições (Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto Edicoes). - 2183-0606. ; 7:1, s. 26-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article aims to provide a conceptual framework for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to evaluate the appropriation of blockchain technology for their business needs and challenges. This conceptual framework aims to respond to the problem of increasing speculations surrounding the blockchain that is considered to be an absolute and innovative solution to many business related problems. However, this argument might not be realistic for SMEs despite this assumption. The main argument of the article is that SMEs should be skeptical while evaluating the appropriation of this technology for their business needs and they should follow a tailored approach whilst adopting it. Otherwise, the likelihood is high that a short-term and unstructured knowledge management process to adopt blockchain will end up with a waste of resources. The present paper conceptualizes an appropriation framework within nine factors namely, reduction of costs, internalization, digital representation of assets, unalterable data recording, network size, transparent and synchronized ledger, scalability, fair trade, and financing. Given the field’s infancy state of development, the paper relies on a qualitative document analysis involving SME literature and extant literature and white papers of blockchain applications.

  • A study of how uncertainty emerges in the uncertainty-embedded innovation process
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation Management. - : Imperial College Press. - 1363-9196 .- 1757-5877 .- 2183-0606. ; 7:1, s. 46-79
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to understand about how uncertainty emerges in the innovation process. Since uncertainty is embedded in the innovation process, to understand how uncertainty emerges in the process one needs to understand how innovation process unfolds over time. Since an innovation process involves various resource recombination activities occurring in several phases, to understand how innovation process unfolds one needs understand “how do various resource recombination activities occur over time for the creation of novelty?” This knowledge would enable us to understand the conditions under which vital activities of resource recombination can/cannot be undertaken and coordinated as well as would allow us to understand the underlying decisions made by the innovators for their efficient undertaking and coordination. This paper investigates the innovation process in two companies through performing qualitative study. The innovation processes are analysed in the light of a conceptual model developed based on the Dubois’ (1994) End-product related activity structure model, Håkansson’s (1987) “ARA model” and Goldratt’s (1997) “Critical chain concept”. The findings suggest that uncertainty emerges in the innovation process in a cycle of interaction with resource void, activity void and actors’ limited cognition due to lack of knowledge, undue optimism, and rationally justified reason for disregarding information. Accordingly, a great deal of compromises is made while undertaking the activities.

  • Unlearning at the Individual Level : An Exploratory Case Study in a High Power Distance Country
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Innovation Management. - Porto : Kexue Chubanshe,Science Press. - 2183-0606. ; 6:3, s. 17-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a case study that addresses factors that influence unlearning at the individual level. These factors were studied in a public sector organization located in a country characterized by high power distance. The case organization went through a change process of a daily routine caused by the introduction of a new technology. Data were collected through semi structured face-to-face interviews with shop floor agents in the state of Santa Catarina/Brazil. The results highlight the strong influence of the support of formal leaders on the unlearning process of individuals, suggesting that managers operating in a high power distance environment have to make bigger efforts compared to their counterparts in small power distance settings to promote unlearning processes of employees. The study advances the limited body of knowledge regarding unlearning in general and unlearning at the individual level in particular. It also stresses the influence of the national cultural dimension on the unlearning process of individuals.

  • Business Transfer Paradox in Entrepreneurship Education : A research agenda for increasing the number of successors
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Innovation Management. - Porto : Associação Journal of Innovation Management. - 2183-0606. ; 11:2, s. 1-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most of the entrepreneurship education (EE) efforts have been directed to business creation as the preferredoption for entrepreneurial activity. Considering the ever-increasing number of businesses to be transferredand thus the need for people who are willing and interested in seeing a business transfer as a careeroption, this one-sided view is unsatisfactory. Inspired by the "attention-interest-desire-action"" model frommarketing, this paper brings together the existing literature and the authors'own research and teachingexperience to propose research directions that can lay the theoretical foundation to incorporate businesstransfers more clearly in EE. This underlines that value creation through entrepreneurship can take differentforms and adds a missing but relevant part to EE and its development
