  • Becoming a Netflix nation: Extroversion, exportability, and visibility through a case study of Maestro in Blue
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: NECSUS. - 2213-0217. ; :1, s. 242-265
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Christopher Papakaliatis, a prominent figure in Greek television, propelled Greece into the global streaming arena with his series Maestro in Blue. Supported by the National Centre of Audiovisual Media and Communication (EKOME) and initially aired on MEGA TV, the show made history on 19 December 2022 as the first Greek drama to debut on Netflix. This study explores the significance of such turning points for small television nations, analysing textual choices, production strategies, and broader significance for the visibility of Greek television on the global stage. As such, the study contributes to understanding the evolving landscape of transnational television and its implications for small television cultures and industries.

  • Ingår i: NECSUS. European Journal of Media Studies (EJMS). - 2213-0217. ; Spring 2023
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ports make visible neglected details in the history of film distribution. The international shipment of film connected for more than half a century the main nodes in the network of film distribution. This article is mapping questions on port-related logistical challenges, based on the personal and corporate collections of Swedish film distributor Oscar Rosenberg (1874-1943) and his film agency from around 1916 to 1930, and the changing conditions for four Swedish ports the years around 1920.

  • Come together? : Curating communal viewing experiences for hybrid and online film festivals
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: NECSUS. - Amsterdam : Amsterdam University Press. - 2213-0217. ; :Autumn 2020_#Method
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Are online festival editions completely unable to reproduce the community feel that analog festivals can create? This article sets out to challenge the simple binary of the analog versus the digital. Online viewing tends to be framed as an individual, solitary activity in contrast to the collective experience of watching a film offline in the cinema. Questioning the binary opposition often constructed between online and offline viewing, this article presents two best practice examples illustrating how a sense of community can be achieved while streaming films online. These two examples of communal viewing experiences in online formats, which I have been following during lockdown, are Carol Morley’s Friday Film Club and the event ‘Come Together’, arranged by the Swedish Archive for Queer Moving Images. Despite not being part of the film festival circuit, these cases provide best practice examples for film festival programming.

  • Screen decorum : Silent Hollywood and neoclassical concepts of acting
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: NECSUS. - 2213-0217. ; 11:1, s. 285-301
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Very few concepts in cinema studies have drawn as intense and long-lasting debates as David Bordwell, Janet Staiger, and Kristin Thompson’s formulation of the Classical Hollywood Cinema.[1] These debates have prominently revolved around historiographical questions of style and spectatorship and, more specifically, around the approaches to narrative and editing techniques.[2] In this article, I revisit the debates about the notion of classical cinema in order to call attention to its implications on studies of the history of film acting – a subject that has thus far remained in the margins of these debates. My focus here is on ideas about film acting that emerged in Hollywood cinema of the silent era, a period that saw the formulation of the principal traits of the so-called classical style.
