  • Lanthanum-doped Calcium Manganite (La0.1Ca0.9MnO3) Cathode for Advanced Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC)
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Materials Today-Proceedings. - : Elsevier BV. - 2214-7853. ; , s. 2698-2706
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present here a new perovskite oxide with low lanthanum content doped in calcium manganite, La0.1Ca0.9MnO3 (LCM) as a functional material for low temperature solid oxide fuel cell (LTSOFC) and electrolyte-layer free fuel cell (EFFC). The LCM introduces an intrinsic mixed-ion and electron conduction. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis shows high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity with an extremely low activation energy which enables an excellent cathode activity. Fuel cells using LCM as cathode with oxide ion conducting electrolyte samarium doped ceria (SDC) and NCAL as an anode, demonstrate a maximum power density of 650 mW cm(-2) at 550 degrees C, which is higher than most of the cathode materials reported for SOFC at this temperature. For EFFC, maximum power density of 750 mW cm(-2) is achieved using LCM as a semiconductor material with SDC ion conducting material. The present work highlights the development of new active air electrode especially for developing low temperature solid oxide fuel cells.

  • Gas-Condensed Phase Reactions - A Novel Route to Synthesize Alloys and Intermetallics Involving Refractory Metals
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Materials Today: Proceedings. - : Elsevier. - 2214-7853.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reduction and simultaneous reduction-carburization of oxide mixtures to get intermetallics and composite materials may open up shorter process routes towards the end-user needs. The use of natural gas or hydrogen would be environment-friendly. With these aims, the corresponding kinetics were studied by thermogravimetry, gas chromatography as well as laser-flash method. It was found that, under identical conditions, the Arrhenius activation energy for the reduction is proportional to the thermodynamic stability of the compound reduced. Intermetallics could be synthesized successfully and the product was found to have nanograins. Also, Metallic coating on copper surfaces was successfully developed.

  • Behavior of CFRP-strengthened RC beams with web openings in shear zones : Numerical simulation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Materials Today-Proceedings. - : Elsevier BV. - 2214-7853. ; , s. 3229-3239
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The passing of service ducts and pipes often necessitates web openings in reinforced concrete (RC) beams. The strength and stiffness of the beam are reduced due to such web opening(s). Existing experimental research has shown the possibility of utilizing externally bonded Carbon Fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) to compensate for the strength loss of beams. However, there have been few finite element (FE) methodologies for predicting and estimating the performance of such RC beams. This paper uses nine dif-ferent FE models to simulate a CFRP strengthened web opening using ABAQUS. This paper evaluates RC beam performance with web openings in the shear zone and proposed reinforcement of CFRP. Nine RC beams with openings, numerical tested under 2-loads. The models were constructed using the ABAQUS software by FE to simulate RC beams with a CFRP strengthened by two rectangular web openings. This paper studies the sequential effect of the different fundamental parameters on the strengthened RC beams' overall stiffness and shear strength response, achieving optimum utilization of the strengthened technique in load-bearing capacity and potential deflection. Results have shown no need to strengthen small web openings in the RC beams' shear zone. Beams with large openings in the shear zone need strengthening with CFRP; the beam's efficiency has been significantly improved using 2-layers of CFRP sheets around the web opening and a single-layer CFRP strip in the flexural zone bottom the chord.

  • Exploring optics of beetle cuticles with Mueller-matrix ellipsometry
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Materials Today: Proceedings. - : Elsevier. - 2214-7853.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spectroscopic Mueller-matrix ellipsometry at variable angles of incidence is applied to beetle cuticles using a small (50 -100 μm) spot size. It is demonstrated how ellipticity and degree of polarization of the reflected light can be derived from a Mueller matrix providing a detailed insight into reflection properties. Results from Cetonia aurata, Chrysina argenteola and Cotinis mutabilis are presented. The use of Mueller matrices in regression analysis to extract structural and optical parameters of cuticles is briefly described and applied to cuticle data from Cetonia aurata whereby the pitch of the twisted layered structure in the cuticle is determined as well as the refractive indices of the epicuticle and the exocuticle.

  • Electrochromism of nitrogen-doped tungsten oxide thin films
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Materials Today. - : Elsevier BV. - 2214-7853. ; 33:6, s. 2434-2439
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tungsten-oxide-based thin films were prepared by reactive DC magnetron sputtering in the presence ofoxygen and nitrogen. Nitrogen contents up to 12 at.% were documented by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis. Optical and electrochemical measurements showed that films with up to 4 at.% of nitrogen were as transparent as undoped tungsten oxide films and displayed enhanced electrochromic properties manifested in an increase in the coloration efficiency by as much as 20%.

  • Electronic and magnetic behaviors of (V, Mn), (V, Fe) and (V, Cu) codoped tin carbide : Ab initio and Monte Carlo calculations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Materials Today. - : Elsevier. - 2214-7853. ; , s. 448-453
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present study, we performed ab initio calculations for tin carbide codoped with (V,Mn), (V,Cu) and (V,Fe). The electronic and magnetic properties of tin carbide are calculated by means of density functional theory (DFT). The half metallic ferromagnetic behaviour of dual impurities VMnSnC, VFeSnC and VCuSnC is treated by using the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker coherent potential approximation (KKR-CPA). Our results evince that, the stability of ferromagnetism state was induced by the charge state of magnetic impurities, which room temperature ferromagnetic DMS based spintonic is realized. The exchange interactions are obtained from first principles calculations using an Ising model. Our calculation is supported by Monte Carlo simulation based on the heat bath algorithm. We have examined the effects of magnetic parameters for magnetization, internal energy and magnetic susceptibility.

  • The use of MgO-paste as a biodegradeable bone cement
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Materials Today. - : Elsevier. - 2214-7853. ; 3:2, s. 556-561
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of MgO-paste as bone cement was tested on titanium cylinders implanted into rat tibia. The evaluation of bone healingwas made with the retention force (pull-out) test, light microscopy and ESEM/ EDX. Preimplantation of the MgO-paste into drillperforations of rat tibia increased the retention of the titanium implant 6-fold. The error was expressed as the 95% confidenceinterval of means (n=10 bones in each group). The observed difference between 3.46+/-0.71 N/mm2 for Ti-cylinders implantedwith MgO-paste and 0.56+/-0.26 N/mm2 for Ti-cylinders implanted directly into the bone, is statistically significant (p<0.01).The increase of retention force, caused by MgO is parallel to an increased thickness of the compact bone surrounding the implantand closer contact between bone and implant.Histological examination of the implant-related bone showed that the MgO-induced bone growth is mediated by the formation ofa bone-inducing matrix. The matrix contains organic substance, most likely proteins.

  • A High Performance Ag Alloyed Nano-scale n-type Bi2Te3 Based Thermoelectric Material
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Materials Today: Proceedings. - : Elsevier BV. - 2214-7853. ; 2:2, s. 610-619
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A silver alloyed n-type bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) thermoelectric (TE) bulk material with nano crystalline structure was studied and characterized in this paper. The Bi2Te3 nanopowders used in this study were first fabricated via a patented explosion based process. Then, the various concentrations of Ag nanoparticles (0-20 wt. %) were added into the Bi2Te3 nanopowders in order to increase the electrical conductivity. Combining the benefits of high electrical conductivity (1.51x10(5) S.m(-1)) and low thermal conductivity (0.441 W.m(-1).K-1), the dimensionless figure of merit (ZT value) of 1.48 for this n-type Bi2Te3 TE material is achieved at 300 K temperature.

  • Biodegradable Nanofilms on Microcapsules for Controlled Release of Drugs to Infected Chronic Wounds
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Materials Today. - : Elsevier BV. - 2214-7853. ; 2:1, s. 118-125
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Systemic antibiotic and topical antimicrobial overexposure strongly contributes to the development of bacterial resistance. We have assembled nanofilms as a lid for drugs, which respond to the Staphylococcus aureusprotease V8, while remaining intact when exposed to a human wound protease. Hollow microcapsules, loaded with a model drug and with the nanofilm as shell were assembled by template assisted assembly. With a poly-L-glutamic acid-based film, the Glu-X specific V8 caused the film to degrade, leading to release of the model drug, while the human wound protease did not affect the microcapsules. This is an example of triggered release of an active with the wound infection being the trigger.
