  • A Systematic Review on Technologies for Data-DrivenProduction Logistics: Their Role from a Holistic and ValueCreation Perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Logistics. - : MDPI AG. - 2305-6290 .- 2305-6290. ; 5:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A data-driven approach in production logistics is adopted as a response to challengessuch as low visibility and system rigidity. One important step for such a transition is to identifythe enabling technologies from a value-creating perspective. The existing corpus of literature hasdiscussed the benefits and applications of smart technologies in overall manufacturing or logistics. However, there is limited discussion specifically on a production logistics level, from a systematicperspective. This paper addresses two issues in this respect by conducting a systematic literaturereview and analyzing 142 articles. First, it covers the gap in literature concerning mapping theapplication of these smart technologies to specific production logistic activities. Ten groups oftechnologies were identified and production logistics activities divided into three major categories.A quantitative share assessment of the technologies in production logistics activities was carriedout. Second, the ultimate goal of implementing these technologies is to create business value. This isaddressed in this research by presenting the “production logistics data lifecycle” and the importanceof having a balanced holistic perspective in technology development. The result of this paper isbeneficial to build a ground to transit towards a data-driven state by knowing the applications anduse cases described in the literature for the identified technologies.

  • Evaluating Logistics Performances of Agricultural Prunings for Energy Production: A Logistics Audit Analysis Approach
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Logistics. - : MDPI AG. - 2305-6290. ; 2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The utilization of agricultural prunings as renewable energy sources requires effective and efficient logistics systems. The objective of this paper was to map out logistics activities along the agricultural pruning-to-energy (PtE) value chains. It describes the logistics performances based on the existing and potential pruning biomass supply chains focusing on prunings from fruit tree, vineyards, olive groove, and up-rooted tree branches. A logistics audit analysis approach has been used for detailed assessment of logistics performances. The analysis was based mainly on primary data gathered using a structured data survey format targeting the existing and potential PtE initiatives in Spain, Germany, Denmark, France, and Poland. The analysis considered the major stages of the chain, such as pruning, harvesting, processing (e.g., baling and chipping), storage, transport, and the linkage between the different stages. The paper identified the constraints along the logistics chain and recommended appropriate interventions to promote the marketing of agricultural pruning focusing on the supply of quality bales and chips for renewable energy production, and to increase the sustainability of renewable energy generation from PtE initiatives. The study has indicated that there are economic, social, and environmental benefits of PtE initiatives, as well as opportunities to increase the implementation and sustainability of the system.

  • Introducing an Intelligent Goods Service Framework
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Logistics. - : MDPI. - 2305-6290. ; 5:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the increasing diffusion of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, the transportation of goods sector is in a position to adopt novel intelligent services that cut across the otherwise highly fragmented and heterogeneous market, which today consists of a myriad of actors. Legacy systems that rely upon direct integration between all actors involved in the transportation ecosystem face considerable challenges for information sharing. Meanwhile, IoT based services, which are designed as devices that follow goods and communicate directly to cloud-based backend systems, may provide services that previously were not available. For the purposes of this paper, we present a theoretical framework for classification of such intelligent goods systems based on a literature study. The framework, labelled as the Intelligent Goods Service (IGS) framework, aims at increasing the understanding of the actors, agents, and services involved in an intelligent goods system, and to facilitate system comparisons and the development of new innovative solutions. As an illustration of how the IGS framework can be used and contribute to research in this area, we provide an example from a direct industry-academia collaboration.

  • Rolling cargo management using a deep reinforcement learning approach
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Logistics. - : MDPI. - 2305-6290. ; 5:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Loading and unloading rolling cargo in roll-on/roll-off are important and very recurrent operations in maritime logistics. In this paper, we apply state-of-the-art deep reinforcement learning algorithms to automate these operations in a complex and real environment. The objective is to teach an autonomous tug master to manage rolling cargo and perform loading and unloading operations while avoiding collisions with static and dynamic obstacles along the way. The artificial intelligence agent, representing the tug master, is trained and evaluated in a challenging environment based on the Unity3D learning framework, called the ML-Agents, and using proximal policy optimization. The agent is equipped with sensors for obstacle detection and is provided with real-time feedback from the environment thanks to its own reward function, allowing it to dynamically adapt its policies and navigation strategy. The performance evaluation shows that by choosing appropriate hyperparameters, the agents can successfully learn all required operations including lane-following, obstacle avoidance, and rolling cargo placement. This study also demonstrates the potential of intelligent autonomous systems to improve the performance and service quality of maritime transport.

  • Paving the Path towards Efficient Construction Logistics by Revealing the Current Practice and Issues
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Logistics. - : MDPI. - 2305-6290. ; 5:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multiple deliveries and long turnaround times on construction sites harm the environmentand disturb on-site productivity and safety. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the transportpatterns of construction material deliveries, including turnaround times. In order to investigatethe number of transports and turnaround times, transport data for 13 Swedish construction sites, which were collected with the help of booking systems, were used. By comparing data from the cases, several patterns were observed: (i) very few projects receive deliveries at weekends, (ii) almost allprojects receive 50% of their daily deliveries before 09:00, (iii) long goods, standard euro pallets andlightweight goods (less than 500 kg) are the most common deliveries, (iv) trucks and delivery vansare the most common vehicles used and (v) goods to be handled by crane and lightweight goodsgenerate the longest turnaround time/delivery. This is one of the rare studies revealing currentpractice and issues associated with material deliveries, which is a necessary first step to increaseefficiency of construction logistics. This study shows that it is possible to influence these issues,as some projects performed better than others regarding turnaround times and transport.

  • Digital Twin Integrated Reinforced Learning in Supply Chain and Logistics
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Logistics. - : MDPI AG. - 2305-6290. ; 5:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: As the Internet of Things (IoT) has become more prevalent in recent years, digital twins have attracted a lot of attention. A digital twin is a virtual representation that replicates a physical object or process over a period of time. These tools directly assist in reducing the manufacturing and supply chain lead time to produce a lean, flexible, and smart production and supply chain setting. Recently, reinforced machine learning has been introduced in production and logistics systems to build prescriptive decision support platforms to create a combination of lean, smart, and agile production setup. Therefore, there is a need to cumulatively arrange and systematize the past research done in this area to get a better understanding of the current trend and future research directions from the perspective of Industry 4.0. Methods: Strict keyword selection, search strategy, and exclusion criteria were applied in the Scopus database (2010 to 2021) to systematize the literature. Results: The findings are snowballed as a systematic review and later the final data set has been conducted to understand the intensity and relevance of research work done in different subsections related to the context of the research agenda proposed. Conclusion: A framework for data-driven digital twin generation and reinforced learning has been proposed at the end of the paper along with a research paradigm.

  • Scope for Sustainable Development of Small Holder Farmers in the Palm Oil Supply Chain—A Systematic Literature Review and Thematic Scientific Mapping
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Logistics. - : MDPI AG. - 2305-6290. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The expansion of oil palm agriculture across the nations, especially in countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia, is growing at exacerbated levels. However, there is still a lack of awareness of the environmental, social, and economic challenges among the sector, ranging from the combination of ecological, economic, and ecosystem sustainability to the livelihoods of plantation workers and small holder communities. Small holders struggle to attain the primary standards on market governance, debt-free livelihood enhancements, certification norms, proper land rights and usage, outsourcing quality seeds, harvesting technologies, labor usage, etc. Method: There is a need to systematize the existing literature toward one that addresses the most fundamental and urgent questions that govern the palm oil small holder sustainability in the palm oil supply chain. The objective of this article is two-fold. One approach was to undertake an integrated systematic review and thematic scientific mapping of the last 10 years of research effort (2009–2020) on the specified research agenda, using data from the Web of Science (WoS) core collection database. Another objective was to gain insights and research direction. Results: The defined gaps and insights from the study helped to form the basis for developing a conceptual framework for achieving the sustainability and livelihood of small holders in the palm oil sector. Conclusions: There is a stringent need to focus on the sustainability factors of small holders in the palm oil upstream logistics to address and improve the overall efficiency of the supply chain.
