  • How East Germany Fabricated the Myth of HIV Being Man-Made
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care. - : SAGE Publications. - 2325-9574 .- 2325-9582. ; 16:6, s. 519-522
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the fact that the origin of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) being a contamination and a mutation originating from primates is well-documented alternative narratives are often being heard ofespecially in sub-Saharan Africa. One such narrative is about HIV being man-made in a military laboratory in the United States. In this article, it is shown how this narrative was fabricated by the intelligence services in East Germany (German Democratic Republic – GDR) as part of the ideological warfare during the Cold War. The purpose of this article is to put an end to a long-lasting conspiracy theory, which is still alive and may create diversion from serious research on the topic.

  • Assessment of Health-Related Quality of Life among People Living with HIV in Xinjiang, West China
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care. - : SAGE Publications. - 2325-9574 .- 2325-9582. ; 16:6, s. 588-594
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In total, 679 HIV-positive patients from 4 clinics in Urumqi city were given structured questionnaires by the doctors or nurses treating them. Health-related quality of life (HRQL) was assessed using the Chinese Patient-Reported Outcome Quality of Life-HIV questionnaire versions in Mandarin and Uyghur. This tool has been used in other parts of China and several countries. Compared to France, Australia, United States, Brazil, Thailand, Cambodia, Senegal, and Central-Southern China (CS China), the HRQL was significantly lower among HIV-positive patients in Xinjiang, with regard to the dimension of treatment impact and general health score. The health concern was similar to Brazil and Cambodia but lower than other countries and CS China. Our findings showed high stigmatization: 86% of the patients were afraid to tell others they were HIV positive and 69% often felt or always felt depressed. Only 1% of the patients were on antidepressant treatment. © 2017, © The Author(s) 2017.

  • The Battle Over Control; A Discourse Analysis of HIV/AIDS Caregiving in South Africa, Past and Present
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care (JIAPAC). - : SAGE Publications. - 2325-9574 .- 2325-9582. ; 15:3, s. 232-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this discourse analytic article, I discuss the shifting challenges of HIV/AIDS caregiving, as highlighted in previous research, as well as the similarities between past and present challenges as illustrated by the discourses of HIV/AIDS caregivers at a nonprofit organization in South Africa. Using data from interviews with staff members and volunteers, I illustrate how both past and contemporary challenges in HIV/AIDS caregiving relate to an inability to exercise control. Participants’ discourses revealed a contrast whereby, on one hand, they conveyed a sense of being in control over HIV, while, contradictorily, their accounts contained instances of lack or loss of control. I discuss the implications of barriers to control in HIV/AIDS caregiving and the role of communication and interaction research. I conclude by endorsing ongoing, regular assessments of the needs of those undertaking such work in order to identify their evolving needs in light of evolving challenges.

  • Frequent Coinfection with Hepatitis among HIV-Positive Patients in Urumqi, China.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care (Chicago, Ill. : 2002). - : SAGE Publications. - 1545-1097. ; 12:1, s. 58-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To analyze the epidemiology and outcome for patients with HIV coinfected with hepatitis in comparison with monoinfected patients. METHODS: At the First Affiliated Hospital at Xinjiang Medical University in Urumqi, China, 395 patients were diagnosed with HIV between 2001 and 2010. The main routes of transmission were sexual (30%) and intravenous drug use (33%). The patient records were studied retrospectively. RESULTS: A total of 135 patients had markers of viral hepatitis (34.2%). Abnormal liver function was seen among 48.9% of these patients. Hepatitis B surface antigen was positive in 24 patients (6.1%), with 15 (3.8%) being hepatitis B virus (HBV)-DNA positive, none on tenofovir treatment, because it is still not provided free in Xinjiang. Hepatitis C antibodies were found in 98 patients (24.8%), 46 (11.6%) were hepatitis C virus (HCV)-RNA positive. Only 1 patient had been treated with interferon and ribavirin. Both HBV and HCV were found in 13 (3.3%) of the patients. Conclusions: Nearly half of the HIV patients in Urumqi had markers of hepatitis. Only antiretroviral treatment is provided free, and most of the patients cannot afford the hepatitis treatment they need, which has to be addressed in the treatment programs.
