  • School Nurses' Attitudes toward Family Involvement in School Healthcare
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Health Behavior and Policy Review. - : Paris Scholar Publishing. - 2326-4403. ; 7:1, s. 51-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: We evaluated school nurses' attitudes towards family involvement in school healthcare when children exhibit signs of mental health problems. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, the Families' Importance in Nursing Care-Nurses' Attitudes (FINC-NA) instrument was used to measure school nurses' (N = 133) attitudes towards family involvement. Data were analyzed with the Mann-Whitney U-test.Results: School nurses (95%) encountered students with mental health problems every day or every week. Overall, school nurses were positive towards family involvement in school healthcare. Primary school nurses were more positive compared to secondary school nurses, seeing the family as a resource and a conversation partner. School nurses who felt that they had insufficient tools to work with children with mental health problems saw the family as a burden compared to school nurses who reported they have sufficient tools. Conclusion: School nurses' attitudes toward involving families as a resource are promising. However, when nurses perceive themselves as lacking sufficient tools to respond to children's mental health problems, they are more likely to experience the family as a burden than a resource. Cooperation between school nurses and families may be crucial. Therefore, we suggest a Family Health Conversations model to improve nurse-family collaboration

  • An evaluation of daily relaxation training and psychosomatic symptoms in young children
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Health Behavior and Policy Review. - : Paris Scholar Publishing. - 2326-4403. ; 3:3, s. 198-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: We evaluated the efficacy of daily relaxation training on psychosomatic symptoms during one school year among 8-year-old children. Methods: Cortisol in saliva, abdominal circumference including body mass index (BMI), heart rate, rate pressure product (RPP), and stress in children (SIC) were measured. Teachers in the intervention classes were interviewed. The intervention consisted of a daily relaxation therapy (RT). Results: The intervention group showed reduced heart rate. Individuals of the intervention group showed an improvement regarding headaches and the ability to fall asleep. The qualitative results showed that the RT had a calming effect on both the children and the teachers. Conclusions: RT among children may be of use to cope with stress as interpreted by some improved parameters in the intervention group.

  • Trajectories and predictors of steps in a worksite intervention : ASUKI-step
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Health Behavior & Policy Review. - : Paris Scholar Publishing Ltd.. - 2326-4403. ; 2:1, s. 46-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: We evaluated the trajectory of steps over time, success in walking 10,000 steps/day for 100 days, and socio-demographic predictors of success in a pedometer-based intervention (ASUKI-Step).Methods: A single-group, pre-post quasi-experimental design was used. Participants were university employees in Arizona (N = 712) and Sweden (N = 1390). Linear growth models and logistic regression were used to assess the trajectories of change in steps and the predictors of meeting the step standard, respectively. Results: Linear and curvilinear changes in steps occurred over time with individual variation in the trajectories of change (p < .01). Half of the participants (52.9%) accumulated 10,000 steps for 100 days. No changes were observed for accelerometer-derived minutes of activity. Conclusions: Individually tailoring pedometer-based interventions may enhance success.

  • Effects of a School Tobacco Policy on Student Smoking and Snus Use
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Health behavior and policy review. - : Paris Scholar Publishing. - 2326-4403. ; 7:4, s. 358-365
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: A school tobacco policy (STP) commonly is used to reduce smoking among adolescents, but the effectiveness of such programs is unclear. We evaluated the impact of an STP on tobacco use in 4 schools. Methods: The study included 4 intervention and 4 control schools, located in the inner city of Stockholm, Sweden. Schools self-selected for assignment to either an intervention program or a comparison group. In total, the study was comprised of 2671 students in grades 9 and 11, ages 15 to 18, and 1998 students (75%) responded to the questionnaire. We used a repeated cross-sectional design with assessment of tobacco use prevalence before implementation of the STP in 2016 and after 2 years under the program, in 2018.Results: Two years after the STP, the intervention school in grade 9 showed a lower prevalence (13.5% vs 1.6%) in the proportion of students who reported smoking (χ2 = 4.54; p < .05) whereas the proportion reporting snus use was practically unchanged. We found no statistically significant impact of the STP for grade 11.Conclusions: The results are promising with regard to smoking, when the STP is implemented in early adolescence.

  • Active School Transportation is an Investment in School Health
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Health Behavior and Policy Review. - : Paris Scholar Publishing. - 2326-4403. ; 5:2, s. 88-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: In this study, we aimed to explore the experiences of schoolchildren and teachers participating in an empowerment- and gamification-inspired program to promote children's active school transportation. Methods: Data were collected using focus groups with 32 schoolchildren and 2 teachers. Content analysis revealed 2 themes and 5 subthemes. Results: Integrating learning into the program increased student engagement and enhanced learning outcomes. The program also created additional value beyond physical activity, such as togetherness, readiness to learn, and changed parental attitudes. Conclusions: Combining learning with physical activity through gamification is a promising method for promoting active school transportation. The time and energy spent increasing active school transportation enrich learning activities and health and are therefore well invested

  • Patterns of Poor Health among Junior and Senior High School Students in Sweden
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Health Behavior and Policy Review. - Oak Ridge, NC (USA) : Paris Scholar Publishing Ltd. - 2326-4403. ; 4:3, s. 294-305
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: We examined how students’ self-perceived poor health is associated with social background, family, and school situation. Methods: Questionnaires distributed to 13,006 students in Sweden were examined using logistic regression analyses. The investigation focused on students reporting both poor self-rated health and subjective health complaints, referred to asself-perceived poor health. Results: Besides age and sex, we found associations between self-perceived poor health and family structure, relationship with parents, and school-related factors such as truancy, grades, and perceived school climate. Conclusions: Self-perceived poor health is related to both family and school related factors. Therefore, preventive health interventions need to include both school and family. Special attention should be given to truant students.
