  • How do Practitioners Perceive the Relevance of Requirements Engineering Research? An Ongoing Study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 IEEE 25TH INTERNATIONAL REQUIREMENTS ENGINEERING CONFERENCE (RE). - : IEEE. - 2332-6441. - 9781538631911 ; , s. 382-387
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relevance of Requirements Engineering (RE) research to practitioners is a prerequisite for problem-driven research in the area and key for a long-term dissemination of research results to everyday practice. To understand better how industry practitioners perceive the practical relevance of RE research, we have initiated the RE-Pract project, an international collaboration conducting an empirical study. This project opts for a replication of previous work done in two different domains and relies on survey research. To this end, we have designed a survey to be sent to several hundred industry practitioners at various companies around the world and ask them to rate their perceived practical relevance of the research described in a sample of 418 RE papers published between 2010 and 2015 at the RE, ICSE, FSE, ESEC/FSE, ESEM and REFSQ conferences. In this paper, we summarize our research protocol and present the current status of our study and the planned future steps.

  • Requirements Engineering Challenges in Large-Scale Agile System Development
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Requirements Engineering Conference. - : IEEE. - 9781538631911 ; , s. 352-361
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Agile methods have proven their value to accelerate delivery of high quality software products and services to customers. End-users have become used to regular updates that fix bugs and provide new features and for software products, short time-to-market has become an important business driver. In order to remain competitive, more and more companies imple- ment agile methods and their practices also for software-intense, large products, such as cars, telecommunication infrastructure, and embedded systems. Development of such system usually relies on plan-driven, stage-gate processes and is subject to safety and regulative concerns. Consequently, requirements engineering involves upfront and detailed analysis, which can be at odds with agile (software) development. In this paper, we present results from a multiple case study with two car manufacturers, a telecommunications company, and a technology company that are on the journey to introduce organization wide continuous integration and continuous delivery to customers. Based on 20 qualitative interviews, 5 focus groups, and 2 cross-company workshops, we discuss possible scopes of agile methods within system development, the consequences this has on the role of requirements, and the challenges that arise from the interplay of requirements engineering and agile methods in large-scale system development. These relate in particular to communicating and managing knowledge about a) customer value and b) the system under development. We argue that better alignment of a holistic requirements model with agile development practices promises rich gains in development speed, flexibility, and overall quality of software and systems.

  • SusAF Welcomes SusApp: Tool Support for the Sustainability Awareness Framework
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Requirements Engineering. - 2332-6441 .- 1090-705X. ; , s. 418-419
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As sustainability increasingly gains attention, it has also found its way into the area of software engineering, with a specific emphasis on requirements engineering. The Sustainability Awareness Framework (SusAF) proposed by Duboc et al. supports stakeholders in taking the long view at their software systems in terms of sustainability. In this paper, we propose SusApp, a web-based tool to simplify the application of the SusAF. In particular, it facilitates the documentation and visualization of effects on sustainability. To learn about the users' perception of SusApp, we conducted two small-scale user studies that investigated the tool's usability and usefulness. Overall, the studies showed that the tool was generally perceived positively by the participants. However, shortcomings in the usability became apparent, which have also impacted the perceived usefulness.

  • Prototyping Practices in Software Startups : Initial Case Study Results
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 29th IEEE International Requirements Engineering Conference Workshops, REW 2021. - 2332-6441 .- 1090-705X. - 9781665418980 ; 2021-September, s. 206-211
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Software startups use prototyping to develop and test business ideas and to validate market viability. While prototyping is emphasized in agile methods, there is little research on how startups can best utilise scarce resources to effectively use prototypes in their dynamic business context. We performed a case study of four startups and investigated how startups currently use prototyping to elicit, validate and communicate requirements through semi-structured interviews. Our initial results indicate that prototyping is a commonly applied practice that is implicitly required to obtain funding for early stage startups, that software engineering competence is required to produce interactive and fully functioning prototypes, and that it is a challenge to balance prototype scope against expected gains.

  • Piggybacking on an Autonomous Hauler : Business Models Enabling a System-of-Systems Approach to Mapping an Underground Mine
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 IEEE 25TH INTERNATIONAL REQUIREMENTS ENGINEERING CONFERENCE (RE). - : IEEE Press. - 9781538631911 ; , s. 372-381
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With ever-increasing productivity targets in mining operations, there is a growing interest in mining automation. In future mines, remote-controlled and autonomous haulers will operate underground guided by LiDAR sensors. We envision reusing LiDAR measurements to maintain accurate mine maps that would contribute to both safety and productivity. Extrapolating from a pilot project on reliable wireless communication in Boliden's Kankberg mine, we propose establishing a system-of-systems (SoS) with LIDAR-equipped haulers and existing mapping solutions as constituent systems. SoS requirements engineering inevitably adds a political layer, as independent actors are stakeholders both on the system and SoS levels. We present four SoS scenarios representing different business models, discussing how development and operations could be distributed among Boliden and external stakeholders, e.g., the vehicle suppliers, the hauling company, and the developers of the mapping software. Based on eight key variation points, we compare the four scenarios from both technical and business perspectives. Finally, we validate our findings in a seminar with participants from the relevant stakeholders. We conclude that to determine which scenario is the most promising for Boliden, trade-offs regarding control, costs, risks, and innovation must be carefully evaluated.

  • Delivering Customer Value in the Age of Autonomous, Continuously Evolving Systems
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 IEEE 24th International Requirements Engineering Conference. - : IEEE. - 2332-6441. ; , s. 1-1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The last century has seen unprecedented improvements in the quality of the human condition and technology is at the heart of this progress. Now we are experiencing an even bigger leap as we move towards a new level of digitization and automation. The fuel of this emerging Internet of Things reality is software and the key challenge is to continuously deliver value to customers. To deliver on this, organizations need to adopt a novel approach, evidence-based development, where data-driven decisions by R&D teams are complemented by automated experimentation by families of deployed systems. The keynote first introduces the aforementioned developments, then discusses the key areas of speed, data and ecosystems and finally presents the implications for organizations that seek to continuously deliver value to their customers.

  • Welcome to the First International Workshop on Requirements Engineering for Explainable Systems (RE4ES)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Requirements Engineering. - 2332-6441 .- 1090-705X. ; 2021-September, s. 157-158
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Welcome to the First International Workshop on Requirements Engineering for Explainable Systems (RE4ES), where we aim to advance requirements engineering (RE) for explainable systems, foster interdisciplinary exchange, and build a community. On the one hand, we believe that the methods and techniques of the RE community can add much value to explainability research. On the other hand, we have to ensure that we develop techniques fitted to the needs of other communities. This first workshop explores synergies between the RE community and other communities already researching explainability. To this end, we have based our agenda on a mix of paper presentations from authors of different domains, one keynote from industry and one from research, as well as interactive activities to stimulate lively discussions.

  • New Frontiers for Requirements Engineering
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 IEEE 25th International Requirements Engineering Conference, RE 2017. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781538631911 ; , s. 184-193
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Requirements Engineering (RE) has grown from its humble beginnings to embrace a wide variety of techniques, drawn from many disciplines, and the diversity of tasks currently performed under the label of RE has grown beyond that encom-passed by software development. We briefly review how RE has evolved and observe that RE is now a collection of best practices for pragmatic, outcome-focused critical thinking-A pplicable to any domain. We discuss an alternative perspective on, and de-scription of, the discipline of RE and advocate for the evolution of RE toward a discipline that supports the application of RE prac-tice to any domain. We call upon RE practitioners to proactively engage in alternative domains and call upon researchers that adopt practices from other domains to actively engage with their inspiring domains. For both, we ask that they report upon their experience so that we can continue to expand RE frontiers. © 2017 IEEE.

  • Do we really know what we are building? Raising awareness of potential sustainability effects of software systems in requirements engineering
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Requirements Engineering. - : IEEE COMPUTER SOC. - 2332-6441 .- 1090-705X. ; 2019-September, s. 6-16
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Integrating novel software systems in our society, economy, and environment can have far-reaching effects. As a result, software systems should be designed in such a way as to maintain or improve the sustainability of the socio-technical system of their destination. However, a paradigm shift is required to raise awareness of software professionals on the potential sustainability effects of software systems. While Requirements Engineering is considered the key to driving this change, requirements engineers lack the knowledge, experience and methodological support for doing so. This paper presents a question-based framework for raising awareness of the potential effects of software systems on sustainability, as the first step towards enabling the required paradigm shift. A feasibility study of the framework was carried out with two groups of computer science students. The results of the study indicate that the framework helps enable discussions about potential effects that software systems could have on sustainability.
