  • The Ustašas and Fascism  : “Abolitionism,” Revolution, and Ideology (1929–42)
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics and Society. - : Columbia University Press. - 2364-5334. ; 6:1, s. 281-309
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The analysis departs from a discussion about whether one should consider the Croatian Ustašas as fascist, or whether they in fact are best described as radical nationalist group, as was recently argued by Oleksandr Zaitsev in a comparison with the OUN. By combining Mathiesen’s theory of “the unfinished” with the key elements of “generic fascism”, the authors present a new model for the holistic analysis of fascist ideology over time. Following the in-depth theoretical discussion of the phenomenon of fascistisation, they use the Ustašas as an empirical case to elucidate how “abolitionist” movements and organisations keep part of their ideology “unfinished” in public until the acquisition of state power. During an initial “abolitionist” phase, fascists will focus their communication on those ideological elements of importance for the “dogmatic negation” of “the old system”. The ideological elements relevant for the “positive construction” will instead be merely “suggested” until the assumption of power.  We can find the reason behind such strategies in the statist and monistic tenets of fascist ideology, which views the acquisition of political power as an essential prerequisite for the achievement of profound political and societal change. By connecting the process of fascsistisation to the role of agency and state power, the new model also provides a basis for a more refined analysis of the emergence and development of fascist entities.

  • A Fragile Movement : Afghan War Veterans and the Soviet Collapse in Tajikistan, 1979-92
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics and Society. - Stuttgart : Ibidem-Verlag. - 2364-5334. ; 1:2, s. 57-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Afghan War veterans in Tajikistan showed remarkably little cohesion during the political contention that swept the republic between 1990 and 1992. Instead they fragmented along much the same political and sub-ethnic lines as the population as a whole. Successful state cooptation in earlier years had left a legacy of organizational dependence among the afgantsy, who continued to look towards the state for organizational support and political legitimation. When state backing dried up in the early 1990s, the afgantsy were unable to hold ranks but were drawn into the struggles unfolding in the republic. Drawing on interviews with Afghan War veterans and other primary sources, the article traces the development of state-veteran relations in Tajikistan between 1979 and 1992 and argues that state actors were indispensable in providing organizational strength, discursive cohesion, and political legitimacy to a group shaped by socio-cultural diversity.

  • Behind the “Failed Revolution” : Becoming Patriots, or the Work of Shame in Belarusian Protests
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics and Society. - 2364-5334. ; 3:1, s. 21-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article looks at the politics of shame in relation to the suppressed protests of December 2010 that challenged the re-election of Aliaksandr Lukashenka as president of Belarus (1994–present). My empirical data consist of independent media publications, blog posts, and interviews that speak of “shame” as an emotional response to the protest, its aftermath, and its general context. The article investigates what lines of social differentiation are animated in the circulation of shame discourse, how ashamed subjects are constructed and positioned in this process, and what shame does in relation to protest and its community. Theoretically it engages with discussions on the ambivalence of shame in constructing national narratives and in social movement struggles. The findings suggest that shame, employed as a marker of a patriot of a “non-existent Belarusian nation” and “failed democracy,” creates multiple divisions along the lines of class, civic engagement, and political views. This in turn curtails social mobilization, and ultimately contributes to making social change unimaginable in the present.

  • Managing Memory in Post-Soviet Ukraine : From "Scientific Marxism-Leninism" to the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, 1991-2019
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics and Society. - 2364-5334. ; 7:2, s. 85-134
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The post-Soviet Ukrainian polity has invested considerableresources into forming and managing what it refers to as “nationalmemory” (natsional’na pam’iat’). The Soviet forms and roots of thismemory production are easily discernible, though the ideologicalcontent has changed. Two presidents stood out as particularly activein the field of memory management: Viktor Yushchenko (2005–2010)and Petro Poroshenko (2014–2019). The results of these policies aremixed. Ukrainians have largely internalized the official, legislatedhistory of themselves as genocide victims. Approval of the OUN, UPA,and Stepan Bandera has increased. At the same time significantpolarization remains within Ukraine when it comes to attitudestowards the country’s past. Meanwhile, the instrumentalization ofthe past has complicated Ukraine’s relations with its partners in theWest.

  • Yushchenko's Fascist : The Bandera Cult in Ukraine and Canada
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics and Society. - 2364-5334. ; 3:2, s. 129-178
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Viktor Yushchenko’s 2010 designation of Stepan Bandera, the war‐time leader of the most radical and violent branch of the Ukrainian far right, as a national hero constituted, in many ways, the climax of the third post‐Soviet Ukrainian president’s instrumentalization of history. Yushchenko’s political use of history triggered sharply polarized, and often emotional discussions of Bandera’s role in history, not only in Ukraine, but also in Canada, the United States, Poland, and Israel. This article analyzes the “Bandera debate” against the backdrop of the significant advances in the historiography of war‐time Ukrainian nationalism since the openings of archives in recent decades.
