  • When Being Nice or Being Smart Could Bring You Down : Compensatory Dynamics in Strategic Self-presentation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Review of Social Psychology (IRSP). - : Ubiquity Press, Ltd.. - 2397-8570 .- 0992-986X. ; 31:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research shows that the two fundamental dimensions of social perception, warmth and competence, are often negatively related in our perceptions of others, the so-called compensation effect. The current experiments investigate people’s use of such compensation when self-presenting strategically to reach a desired goal. In Experiment 1, participants applying for a qualified job emphasized their competence while downplaying their warmth. In Experiments 2 and 3, participants role-playing as crime witnesses similarly attenuated their warmth relative to their competence. In contrast, in Experiment 3, participants in the role of suspects of a severe crime chose to downplay their competence. Results suggest that self-presenters are sensitive to warmth-competence dynamics in social perception as a means to promote the optimal self-image given their specific goals.

  • Worldviews and Values as Bases for Political Orientations
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Review of Social Psychology (IRSP). - : Ubiquity Press, Ltd.. - 2397-8570. ; 36:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study used structural equation modelling to test how political orientations (self-reported placement on socially liberal-conservative and economically left-right continuums) could be predicted from basic worldviews (a generally humanistic vs. normativistic orientation) and basic personal values (concepts pertaining to desirable end states or behaviors) in conjunction with core political values (normative principles about functioning of society) in a population sample from Sweden. In general, political orientation was much more strongly predicted by social-focus values (conservation and self-transcendence), and only weakly predicted by personal-focus values (self-enhancement and openness to change). The results also showed that basic personal values in conjunction with core political values mediated the relationship between basic worldviews and political orientation.

  • Talking About Temperature and Social Thermoregulation in the Languages of the World
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Review of Social Psychology (IRSP). - : Ubiquity Press, Ltd.. - 2397-8570 .- 2119-4130. ; 34:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The last decade saw rapid growth of the body of work devoted to relations between social thermoregulation and various other domains, with a particular focus on the connection between prosociality and physical warmth. This paper reports on a first systematic cross-linguistic study of the exponents of conceptual metaphor affection is warmth (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980; Grady, 1997), which provides the motivation for the large share of research in this area. Assumed to be universal, it enables researchers, mostly speakers of major European languages, to treat words like warm and cold as self-evident and easily translatable between languages - both in their concrete uses (to feel warm/cold) and as applied to interpersonal relationships (a cold/warm person, warm feelings, etc.). Based on a sample of 94 languages from all around the world and using methodology borrowed from typological linguistics and mixed-effects regression modelling, we show that the relevant expressions show a remarkably skewed distribution and seem to be absent or extremely marginal in the majority of language families and linguistic macro-areas. The study demonstrates once again the dramatic influence of the Anglocentric, Standard Average European, and WEIRD perspectives on many of the central concepts and conclusions in linguistics, psychology, and cognitive research and discusses how changing this perspective can impact research in social psychology in general and in social thermoregulation in particular.

  • How does a caller's anger, fear and sadness affect operators' decisions in emergency calls?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Review of Social Psychology (IRSP). - Frankrike : Ubiquity Press. - 2397-8570. ; 31:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We studied how emergency operators’ interpretation of callers’ anger, fear, and sadness influenced emergency assessments in 146 authentic emergency calls. All emergency calls need to be decided on quickly and operators discriminated emotional expressions, by separating fear from other emotions across help need levels. Using path analysis and structural equation modeling, caller’s fear, as opposed to expressions of anger and sadness, showed both direct and indirect effects on the intention to provide help. Based on the findings, emergency operators are argued to actively incorporate callers’ expressions into emergency decisions, rather than peripherally processing emotional expression. Such findings allow for a discussion on the interpersonal effects of emotional expressions and, more practically, how fast help will be able to arrive to the location of the emergency.
