  • Measurement of long-range multiparticle azimuthal correlations with the subevent cumulant method in pp and p plus Pb collisions with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 97:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A detailed study of multiparticle azimuthal correlations is presented using pp data at root s = 5.02 and 13 TeV, and p+Pb data at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The azimuthal correlations are probed using four-particle cumulants c(n){4} and flow coefficients v(n){4} = (-c(n){4})(1/4) for n = 2 and 3, with the goal of extracting long-range multiparticle azimuthal correlation signals and suppressing the short-range correlations. The values of c(n){4} are obtained as a function of the average number of charged particles per event, < N-ch >, using the recently proposed two-subevent and three-subevent cumulant methods, and compared with results obtained with the standard cumulant method. The standard method is found to be strongly biased by short-range correlations, which originate mostly from jetswith a positive contribution to c(n){4}. The threesubevent method, on the other hand, is found to be least sensitive to short-range correlations. The three-subevent method gives a negative c(2){4}, and therefore a well-defined v(2){4}, nearly independent of < N-ch >, which implies that the long-range multiparticle azimuthal correlations persist to events with low multiplicity. Furthermore, v(2){4} is found to be smaller than the v(2){2} measured using the two-particle correlation method, as expected for long-range collective behavior. Finally, the measured values of v(2){4} and v(2){2} are used to estimate the number of sources relevant for the initial eccentricity in the collision geometry. The results based on the subevent cumulant technique provide direct evidence, in small collision systems, for a long-range collectivity involving many particles distributed across a broad rapidity interval.

  • Measurements of long-range azimuthal anisotropies and associated Fourier coefficients for pp collisions at root s=5.02 and 13 TeV and p plus Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-s=5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 96:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ATLAS measurements of two-particle correlations are presented for root s = 5.02 and 13 TeV pp collisions and for root(NN)-N-s = 5.02 TeV p + Pb collisions at the LHC. The correlation functions are measured as a function of relative azimuthal angle Delta phi, and pseudorapidity separation Delta eta, using charged particles detected within the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.5. Azimuthal modulation in the long-range component of the correlation function, with | Delta eta| > 2, is studied using a template fitting procedure to remove a back-to-back contribution to the correlation function that primarily arises from hard-scattering processes. In addition to the elliptic, cos(2 Delta phi), modulation observed in a previous measurement, the pp correlation functions exhibit significant cos(3 Delta phi) and cos(4 Lambda phi) modulation. The Fourier coefficients v(n),(n) associated with the cos (n Lambda phi) modulation of the correlation functions for n = 2-4 are measured as a function of charged-particle multiplicity and charged-particle transverse momentum. The Fourier coefficients are observed to be compatible with cos(n phi) modulation of per-event singleparticle azimuthal angle distributions. The single-particle Fourier coefficients vn are measured as a function of charged-particle multiplicity, and charged-particle transverse momentum for n = 2-4. The integrated luminosities used in this analysis are, 64 nb(-1) for the root s = 13 TeV pp data, 170 nb(-1) for the root s = 5.02 TeV pp data, and 28 nb(-1) for the root(NN)-N-s = 5.02 TeV p + Pb data.

  • Study of the unbound nucleus 11N by elastic resonance scattering
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813 .- 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 54:4, s. 1511-1514
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Resonances in the unbound nucleus 11N have been studied, using the resonance scattering reaction 10C+p. The data give evidence for three states above the 10C+p threshold with energies 1.30, 2.04, and 3.72 MeV. These states can be interpreted, in a potential-model analysis, as the ground state and the first two excited states with spin-parity 1 / 2+, 1 / 2-, and 5 / 2+ arising from the shell-model orbitals 1s1 / 2, 0p1 / 2, and 0d5 / 2. A narrow state superposed on a broad structure found at higher energy could be interpreted as the mirror state of the 3 / 2- in 11Be shifted down in energy. This shift would suggest a large radius of the potential.

  • Beyond the neutron drip line: The unbound oxygen isotopes O-25 and O-26
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993 .- 0556-2813. ; 88:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The very neutron-rich oxygen isotopes O-25 and O-26 are investigated experimentally and theoretically. The unbound states are populated in an experiment performed at the R3B-LAND setup at GSI via proton-knockout reactions from F-26 and F-27 at relativistic energies around 442 and 414 MeV/nucleon, respectively. From the kinematically complete measurement of the decay into O-24 plus one or two neutrons, the O-25 ground-state energy and width are determined, and upper limits for the O-26 ground-state energy and lifetime are extracted. In addition, the results provide indications for an excited state in O-26 at around 4 MeV. The experimental findings are compared to theoretical shell-model calculations based on chiral two- and three-nucleon (3N) forces, including for the first time residual 3N forces, which are shown to be amplified as valence neutrons are added.

  • Low-energy Coulomb excitation of Sr 96,98 beams
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813. ; 94:5, s. 054326-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The structure of neutron-rich Sr96,98 nuclei was investigated by low-energy safe Coulomb excitation of radioactive beams at the REX-ISOLDE facility, CERN, with the MINIBALL spectrometer. A rich set of transitional and diagonal E2 matrix elements, including those for non-yrast structures, has been extracted from the differential Coulomb-excitation cross sections. The results support the scenario of a shape transition at N=60, giving rise to the coexistence of a highly deformed prolate and a spherical configuration in Sr98, and are compared to predictions from several theoretical calculations. The experimental data suggest a significant contribution of the triaxal degree of freedom in the ground state of both isotopes. In addition, experimental information on low-lying states in Rb98 has been obtained.

  • Isobaric analog resonances of Mg-31 and the border of the island of inversion
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813 .- 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 90:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The evolution of the nuclear shell structure in the region of the neutron-rich shell-breaking nucleus Mg-32 has been the subject of considerable interest. We present here the first determination of the overlap of the ground and two first excited states in Mg-31 with a neutron coupled to the ground state in Mg-30 based on studies of its isobaric analog resonances in Al-31. The excitation function for proton resonant elastic scattering on Mg-30 was measured close to 0 degrees in the laboratory frame by bombarding a thick polyethylene target with a Mg-30 beam at an energy of 2.92 MeV/nucleon at the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. Three resonances were successfully resolved, and angular momenta and total and proton resonance widths were determined by using R-matrix analysis. The deduced spectroscopic factor for the ground state in Mg-31 is consistent with the shell-model calculation, whereas those for the first and second excited states could not be reproduced. These results show that a drastic change in structure occurs between Mg-30 and Mg-31 and that the onset of structural change in this region therefore occurs between these two isotopes.

  • Exploring the anomaly in the interaction cross section and matter radius of 23O
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993 .- 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 84:6, s. art. no. 061304(R)-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New measurements of the interaction cross sections of 22,23O at 900A MeV performed at the GSI, Darmstadt are reported that address the unsolved puzzle of the large cross section previously observed for 23O. The matter radii for these oxygen isotopes extracted through a Glauber model analysis are in good agreement with the new predictions of the ab initio coupled-cluster theory reported here. They are consistent with a 22O+neutron description of 23O as well.

  • Matter radii of 32-35Mg
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993 .- 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 83:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interaction cross sections of Mg32-35 at 900A MeV have been measurmed using the fragment separator at GSI. The deviation from the r(0)A(1/3) trend is slightly larger for Mg-35, signaling the possible formation of a longer tail in the neutron distribution for Mg-35. The radii extracted from a Glauber model analysis with Fermi densities are consistent with models predicting the development of neutron skins.

  • One-neutron removal reactions on Al isotopes around the N=20 shell closure
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X .- 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 85:4, s. 044312-1-044312-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The one-neutron removal cross sections of neutron-rich Al isotopes and longitudinal momentum distributions of the residues have been measured for A=33 to 36 at relativistic energies (≈900 MeV/u). The inclusive data have been interpreted within the eikonal approximation. The evolution of the single-particle occupancy in the ground state of 33,34,35Al has been studied and compared with shell model predictions. The inferred 2s1/2 neutron occupancy in the 33Al ground-state wave function is 20% to 40% lower than the predicted one. The inclusive data do not exclude the presence of intruder states. Some intruder l=1 occupancy is found in 34Al, similarly to 33Mg. The single-particle 1f7/2 occupancy shows a gradual increase at N=22. Correspondingly, a decrease of the 1d3/2 strength has been observed.
