  • Thermodynamics of evolutionary games
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical review. E. - : American Physical Society. - 2470-0045 .- 2470-0053. ; 97:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How cooperation can evolve between players is an unsolved problem of biology. Here we use Hamiltonian dynamics of models of the Ising type to describe populations of cooperating and defecting players to show that the equilibrium fraction of cooperators is given by the expectation value of a thermal observable akin to a magnetization. We apply the formalism to the public goods game with three players and show that a phase transition between cooperation and defection occurs that is equivalent to a transition in one-dimensional Ising crystals with long-range interactions. We then investigate the effect of punishment on cooperation and find that punishment plays the role of a magnetic field that leads to an "alignment" between players, thus encouraging cooperation. We suggest that a thermal Hamiltonian picture of the evolution of cooperation can generate other insights about the dynamics of evolving groups by mining the rich literature of critical dynamics in low-dimensional spin systems. © 2018 American Physical Society.

  • Understanding droplet collisions through a model flow : Insights from a Burgers vortex
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical review. E. - : American Physical Society. - 2470-0045 .- 2470-0053. ; 99:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the role of intense vortical structures, similar to those in a turbulent flow, in enhancing collisions (and coalescences) which lead to the formation of large aggregates in particle-laden flows. By using a Burgers vortex model, we show, in particular, that vortex stretching significantly enhances sharp inhomogeneities in spatial particle densities, related to the rapid ejection of particles from intense vortices. Furthermore our work shows how such spatial clustering leads to an enhancement of collision rates and extreme statistics of collisional velocities. We also study the role of polydisperse suspensions in this enhancement. Our work uncovers an important principle, which, if valid for realistic turbulent flows, may be a factor in how small nuclei water droplets in warm clouds can aggregate to sizes large enough to trigger rain.

  • Hexatic smectic phase with algebraically decaying bond-orientational order
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical review. E. - : American Physical Society. - 2470-0045 .- 2470-0053. ; 97:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The hexatic phase predicted by the theories of two-dimensional melting is characterized by the power-law decay of the orientational correlations, whereas the in-layer bond orientational order in all the hexatic smectic phases observed so far was found to be long range. We report a hexatic smectic phase where the in-layer bond orientational correlations decay algebraically, in quantitative agreement with the hexatic ordering predicted by the theory for two dimensions. The phase was formed in a molecular dynamics simulation of a one-component system of particles interacting via a spherically symmetric potential. The present results thus demonstrate that the theoretically predicted two-dimensional hexatic order can exist in a three-dimensional system.

  • Active buckling of pressurized spherical shells : Monte Carlo simulation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical review. E. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 2470-0045 .- 2470-0053. ; 108:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the buckling of pressurized spherical shells by Monte Carlo simulations in which the detailed balance is explicitly broken—thereby driving the shell to be active, out of thermal equilibrium. Such a shell typically has either higher (active) or lower (sedate) fluctuations compared to one in thermal equilibrium depending on how the detailed balance is broken. We show that, for the same set of elastic parameters, a shell that is not buckled in thermal equilibrium can be buckled if turned active. Similarly a shell that is buckled in thermal equilibrium can unbuckle if sedated. Based on this result, we suggest that it is possible to experimentally design microscopic elastic shells whose buckling can be optically controlled.

  • Chaos and irreversibility of a flexible filament in periodically driven Stokes flow
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Physical review. E. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 2470-0045 .- 2470-0053. ; 106:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The flow of Newtonian fluid at low Reynolds number is, in general, regular and time-reversible due to absence of nonlinear effects. For example, if the fluid is sheared by its boundary motion that is subsequently reversed, then all the fluid elements return to their initial positions. Consequently, mixing in microchannels happens solely due to molecular diffusion and is very slow. Here, we show, numerically, that the introduction of a single, freely floating, flexible filament in a time-periodic linear shear flow can break reversibility and give rise to chaos due to elastic nonlinearities, if the bending rigidity of the filament is within a carefully chosen range. Within this range, not only the shape of the filament is spatiotemporally chaotic, but also the flow is an efficient mixer. Overall, we find five dynamical phases: the shape of a stiff filament is time-invariant-either straight or buckled; it undergoes a period-two bifurcation as the filament is made softer; becomes spatiotemporally chaotic for even softer filaments but, surprisingly, the chaos is suppressed if bending rigidity is decreased further.

  • Applicability of the Klein-Gordon equation for pair production in vacuum and plasma
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical review. E. - : American Physical Society. - 2470-0045 .- 2470-0053. ; 108:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, a phase-space description of electron-positron pair-creation will be applied, based on a Wigner transformation of the Klein-Gordon equation. The resulting theory is similar in many respects to the equations from the Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner formalism. However, in the former case, all physics related to particle spin is neglected. In the present paper we compare the pair-production rate in vacuum and plasmas, with and without spin effects, in order to evaluate the accuracy and applicability of the spinless approximation. It is found that for modest frequencies of the electromagnetic field, the pair production rate of the Klein-Gordon theory is a good approximation to the Dirac theory, provided the matter density is small enough for Pauli blocking to be neglected, and a factor of two related to the difference in the vacuum energy density is compensated for.

  • Plasma dynamics and vacuum pair creation using the Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner formalism
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical review. E. - : American Physical Society. - 2470-0045 .- 2470-0053. ; 104:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We derive a system of coupled partial differential equations for the equal-time Wigner function in an arbitrary strong electromagnetic field using the Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner formalism. In the electrostatic limit, we present a system of four coupled partial differential equations, which are completed by Ampères law. This electrostatic system is further studied for two different cases. In the first case, we consider linearized wave propagation in a plasma accounting for the nonzero vacuum expectation values. We then derive the dispersion relation and compare it with well-known limiting cases. In the second case, we consider Schwinger pair production using the local density approximation to allow for analytical treatment. The dependence of the pair production rate on the perpendicular momentum is investigated and it turns out that the spread of the produced pairs along with perpendicular momentum depends on the strength of the applied electric field.

  • Radiation reaction effects in relativistic plasmas : the electrostatic limit
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical review. E. - : American Physical Society. - 2470-0045 .- 2470-0053. ; 107:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the evolution of electrostatic plasma waves, using the relativistic Vlasov equation extended by the Landau-Lifshitz radiation reaction, accounting for the back-reaction due to the emission of single particle Larmor radiation. In particular, the Langmuir wave damping is calculated as a function of wave number, initial temperature, and initial electric field amplitude. Moreover, the background distribution function loses energy in the process, and we calculate the cooling rate as a function of initial temperature and initial wave amplitude. Finally, we investigate how the relative magnitude of wave damping and background cooling varies with the initial parameters. In particular, it is found that the relative contribution to the energy loss associated with background cooling decreases slowly with the initial wave amplitude.

  • Validation of symmetry-induced high moment velocity and temperature scaling laws in a turbulent channel flow
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Physical review. E. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 2470-0045 .- 2470-0053. ; 109:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The symmetry -based turbulence theory has been used to derive new scaling laws for the streamwise velocity and temperature moments of arbitrary order. For this, it has been applied to an incompressible turbulent channel flow driven by a pressure gradient with a passive scalar equation coupled in. To derive the scaling laws, symmetries of the classical Navier-Stokes and the thermal energy equations have been used together with statistical symmetries, i.e., the statistical scaling and translation symmetries of the multipoint moment equations. Specifically, the multipoint moments are built on the instantaneous velocity and temperature fields other than in the classical approach, where moments are based on the fluctuations of these fields. With this instantaneous approach, a linear system of multipoint correlation equations has been obtained, which greatly simplifies the symmetry analysis. The scaling laws have been derived in the limit of zero viscosity and heat conduction, i.e., Ret -> infinity and Pr > 1, and they apply in the center of the channel, i.e., they represent a generalization of the deficit law, thus extending the work of Oberlack et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 024502 (2022)]. The scaling laws are all power laws, with the exponent of the high moments all depending exclusively on those of the first and second moments. To validate the new scaling laws, the data from a large number of direct numerical simulations (DNS) for different Reynolds and Prandtl numbers have been used. The results show a very high accuracy of the scaling laws to represent the DNS data. The statistical scaling symmetry of the multipoint moment equations, which characterizes intermittency, has been the key to the new results since it generates a constant in the exponent of the final scaling law. Most important, since this constant is independent of the order of the moments, it clearly indicates anomalous scaling.

  • The urban economy as a scale-free network.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. - 2470-0045 .- 2470-0053. ; 68, s. 036124-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present empirical evidence that land values are scale free and introduce a network model that reproduces the observations. The network approach to urban modeling is based on the assumption that the market dynamics that generates land values can be represented as a growing scale-free network. Our results suggest that the network properties of trade between specialized activities cause land values, and likely also other observables such as population, to be power-law distributed. In addition to being an attractive avenue for further analytical inquiry, the network representation is also applicable to empirical data and is thereby attractive for predictive modeling.
