  • Co-creating Innovative UGC Services with the Media Industry
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - Piscataway : IEEE Press. - 9781467359337 - 9781509056460 - 9780769548920 - 9781467359337 ; , s. 3057-3066
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we identify challenges of involving different stakeholders in distributed co-creative open innovation processes and discuss how these challenges can be handled. In the LoCoMedia project, researchers, newspaper representatives and readers/users have co-created innovative user generated content (UGC) services. With a Living Lab approach with the user in focus in a real life setting, we have experimented with different ways of involving different stakeholders in nine experimental UGC projects. The study concludes that careful recruitment, face to face meetings as a compliment to online activities, heterogeneous participant groups, feedback and careful selection of a flexible online platform is important aspects for involving different stakeholders in co-creating innovative processes. © 2012 IEEE.

  • Reputation and Online Communication : Visualizing Reputational Power to Promote Collaborative Discussions
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 46th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - : IEEE. - 9781467359337 - 9780769548920 ; , s. 748-758
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In technological development in the area of e-democracy in-group equality is taken for granted. However, inequality in online communication is just as common as in other social contexts. To research the effects of starting from the presupposition of inequality we have developed a groupware for discussions. Based on democratic meeting techniques and social media it takes the form of a strategic game. The score within the game reflect user activity and the reactions to the activity in a dynamic way. The calculation and weighing mechanisms are open to inspection and change by the users. Hierarchical roles reflecting game levels may be attached to rights of what a specific user may change. The prototype presented in this paper will be further evaluated in the next phase of the design research process.

  • Steps for a complete wind integration study
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - 9780769548920 ; , s. 2261-2270
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There have been many wind integration studies in recent years, and these efforts are expected to continue. Because power systems and data availability vary significantly, the results and methodologies used in these studies vary. This paper presents findings from international collaboration under IEAWIND Task 25 working towards Recommended Practices for Wind Integration studies. An overview of a complete wind integration study is presented as a flow chart. The setup of a study and main assumptions are important because they have a crucial impact on the results. The main steps in the simulations are presented with methodologies, which include the increase in reserve requirements, estimating impacts on other generation and balancing, capacity value of wind power and increase in transmission due to wind power.

  • Lightweight low-level query-centric user interface modeling
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - 9780769548920 ; , s. 440-449
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Query languages are usually small, powerful and easy to learn, and that motivated us to investigate their role in modeling user interfaces. We explore annotation of template user interface with queries, especially embedded queries, to achieve partial generation of user interface with the ability to generate user interface with interaction styles such as form fillin and direct manipulation. Our model-driven development approach targets especially highly interactive data intensive applications. While our query-oriented user interface modeling principles have already been applied in an agile development environment, the role of this paper is to present a generalization of query-oriented modeling towards more interaction styles. Our modeling approach is annotation-based, thereby lightweight, and although it operates at a lower level than most current UI modeling approaches, its shows promising potential.

  • Interpreting information security policy outcomes : a frames of reference perspective
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 46th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). - : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781467359337 - 9780769548920 ; , s. 4541-4550
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A major concern for IS managers is that information security policies seldom produce expected outcomes. Previously, scholars have studied motivations underlying non-conformance to policies and proposed approaches for motivating employees. However, the socio-cognitive aspects that shape employees' perceptions of the policies and implications for policy outcomes have received modest attention. This study draws on socio-cognitive concept of frames and on literature on information security policies to suggest a theoretical and analytical concept of Information Security Policy Frames of Reference (ISPFOR). The concept provides a sensitizing device to interpret how the frames influence organizational groups' perceptions of policies and the implications of the perceptions on policy outcomes. Three frame categories were uncovered through an interpretive case study at large multinational internet service provider. Findings suggest frames shape perceptions of policies and provide an explanation for unanticipated policy outcomes. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

  • The theory of Crowd Capital
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 46th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - Los Alamitos, Calif : IEEE Communications Society. - 9780769548920 ; , s. 3505-3514
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We are seeing more and more organizations undertaking activities to engage dispersed populations through IS. Using the knowledge-based view of the organization, this work conceptualizes a theory of Crowd Capital to explain this phenomenon. Crowd Capital is a heterogeneous knowledge resource generated by an organization, through its use of Crowd Capability, which is defined by the structure, content, and process by which an organization engages with the dispersed knowledge of individuals -the Crowd. Our work draws upon a diverse literature and builds upon numerous examples of practitioner implementations to support our theorizing. We present a model of Crowd Capital generation in organizations and discuss the implications of Crowd Capital on organizational boundary and on IS research

  • Social Aspects Influencing Relationships in Digital Innovation Networks – The Smart Lock Case
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 46th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - Los Alamitos, Calif. : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781467359337 - 9780769548920 ; , s. 4566-4575
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital innovation processes are becoming more and more networked, where stakeholders are growing dependent of each other’s competences, resources and knowledge. In networks working with digital innovation, actors need to identify, mobilize and integrate diverse and heterogeneous knowledge resources to be able to innovate successfully. Social aspects seem to be important at the boundaries of communities where heterogeneous actors connect, negotiate and adjust to each other’s perspectives. The aim with this paper is to explain what role relationships play in digital innovation networks as well as to describe how social aspects influence these relationships. A case study approach was selected to study events involving multiple stakeholders in a development project aimed at introducing technology that aid elderly, home care personnel and next of kin by improving the management of home care visits. We describe how social aspects such as trust, interest, and commitment between actors influence the relationships. © 2012 IEEE.

  • Platform Complexity : Lessons from the Music Industry
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 46th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Science. - Los Alamitos, CA : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781467359337 - 9780769548920 ; , s. 4625-4634
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Platforms provide anchor-points for coordinating varied activities within an ecosystem. Understanding platform complexity and its effects is therefore a vital concern for academia and industry. The complexity defines the range of possible activities on the platform and the related aspects of control. This paper argues that abstract models of platforms used in current research remove some of the most important features underlying the inherent complexity of digital platforms. This insight is illustrated with a small study of platforms and their evolving complexity in the music industry. The exploration highlights salient phenomena that a more comprehensive theory of digital platforms should encompass. We posit that advancing theoretical perspective that better embrace the complexity of digital platforms is needed to fully capture the strategic and technological implications of emerging digital platforms.

  • Why SPI Initiative Failed: Contextual Factors and Changing Software Development Environment
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 46th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781467359337 - 9780769548920 ; , s. 4606-4615
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For today’s software business and its productivity, software process improvement (SPI) plays a significant role. Organizations that produce software face challenges with the productivity and effectiveness of their operation. The literature lists numerous methods to make the operation better. Critical success factors are defined in order to make the successful improvement procedures more certain. However, these methodologies need to be adjusted to match the organizational context. All organizations and their environments aredifferent, and thus the solution that is the most suitable for individual needs must be modified or localized to fit the case-specific contextual demands. This paper studies the importance of these contextual demands in SPI. In the paper, a framework is presented through which the software improvement process can be better understood and studied. The framework offers a view to understanding the change process describing eight change paths that may be observed when software process improvement is regarded.

  • Exploring service system resources : the role of technology
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 46th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780769548920 - 9781467359337 ; , s. 1317-1326
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper traces a firm’s transition from goods-dominant to service-dominant logic using a remote monitoring system. By adopting a service system perspective and tracing its main resources involved in value creation, we have examined the value propositions that are brought forth, and the roles the different resources play. We have shown how the introduction of a new technology in the form of an RMS has a potentially strong impact on the other three resources in the service system; organization, by grounding service processes in data collection and analysis; people, through changing trust relationships; and shared information, by becoming the system’s language, laws and measures. Thus, by paying specific attention to technology, we may also see and work with its potential.
