  • The assumptions and profiles behind IT security behavior
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 50th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, HICSS 2017. - 1530-1605. - 9780998133102 ; 2017-January, s. 4987-4996
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Among the major IT security challenges facing organizations is non-malicious employee behavior that nevertheless poses significant threats to an organization's IT security. Using a grounded theory methodology, this paper finds that organizational security behaviors are inherently related to employee assumptions regarding the importance of IT security policy compliance and regarding the reason why IT security measures are implemented. Analyzing these assumptions uncovers four profiles of perspectives concerning IT security: the IT Security Indulgence, the IT Security Overindulgence, the IT Knows Best and the IT Security Disconnect profiles. These profiles are useful in understanding employee IT security behaviors and may help IT departments in developing more effective strategies designed to ensure policy compliance.

  • I3DermoscopyApp: Hacking Melanoma thanks to IoT technologies
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 50th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences 2017. - 9780998133102 ; , s. 3587-3596
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper introduces I3DermoscopyApp, a new declination of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm, designed to allow the early detection of melanoma. Even though artificial intelligence programs cannot outperform the diagnostic accuracy of expert dermatologists yet, they reveal to be very useful in providing second opinions to physicians with short clinical experience, thus improving significantly their diagnostic performance. Following this trend, an original integration of mobile app technology and well-known image processing algorithms allows the automatic analysis of pigmented skin lesions to help physicians apply a diagnostic method (Seven Point Check List) based on dermoscopy. The web-based platform makes the physician able to: i) store digital images captured by smartphones featured with a dermatoscope; ii) measure morphological and chromatic parameters of the skin lesion; iii) make a diagnostic decision according to the Seven Point Checklist method. A detailed description of the adopted techniques, together with the first validation results are reported.

  • The role of fitbits in corporate wellness programs : Does step count matter?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 50th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, HICSS 2017. - 1530-1605. - 9780998133102 ; 2017-January, s. 3627-3635
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Striving to promote the health and well-being of their workforce and decrease insurance expenditures, many organizations are incorporating wearable fitness trackers into their corporate wellness programs. Research suggests that these devices encourage individuals to make healthier choices; however, little is known about the drivers and impact of fitness trackers on employee health and wellbeing. We seek to fill this knowledge gap by investigating the following research questions: (1) what is the impact of wearable fitness device use on employee health and well-being? (2) what is the impact of wearable fitness device use on step count? Our results indicate that extended use has a positive impact on employee well-being and step count, which fully mediates the relationship between feature use and health. These findings have implications for research into wearable fitness trackers and, more specifically, for research on the uses of wearable fitness devices in corporate wellness programs.

  • The Role of YouTube in the Digitalization of TV: A Case Study of Novel Value Co-creation Practices at United Screens
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 50th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, January 3-7, 2017. - 9780998133102 ; , s. 4786-4795
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research has shown how incumbent firms in content- based industries (e.g. music, news and photography) were radically affected by digitalization as powerful digital platforms emerged as new loci of innovation. While scholars have suggested that digital technology calls for novel organizing logics and value creation processes, there is a need for further knowledge of what characterizes them, and how they emerge in practice. In addressing this gap we studied United Screens, a firm that capitalizes on the digitalization of video contents by managing major YouTubers and connecting them with advertisers. The study shows how United Screens leverages the layered modularity of digital product architectures for new constellation- based modes of value co-creation. Overall, the paper contributes to research on digital innovation by shedding light on how a novel actor category champions content-driven value creation, an underexplored aspect of digital platform ecosystems.

  • The Effect of Anarchistic Actions in Digital Product Innovation Networks:The Case of “Over the Air” Software Updates
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 50th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences | 2017. - Honolulu : Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). - 9780998133102
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we explore mirroring challenges when an incumbent firm endeavor digital innovation. More specifically, we describe how AutoInc, organized according to the physical vehicle it produces, is challenged when an “over the air” software service is developed and implemented. Using the mirroring hypothesis as a point of departure to understand existing and emerging innovation networks, we recognize anarchistic actions. The analysis reveals the emergence of anarchic actions and how they challenge well-established federative innovation networks within the organization. With continued focus on technology, the project and organization disregarded necessary social structure development, which resulted in reduced capabilities to utilize the digitalized service. This qualitative paper also illustrates how the mirroring hypothesis, although originating from product innovation literature, can be used to understand digitalization dynamics. To the end, the analysis shows that the digital product innovation classification structure may need additional tuning.

  • Building Digital Infrastructures: Towards an Evolutionary Theory of Contextual Triggers
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 50th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences 2017. - 1530-1605. - 9780998133102
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Past IS research suggests it is challenging to build digital infrastructures and then make sure they grow. While more users, innovative services, and new partners spur infrastructure evolution, we know little of the specific contextual triggers that set these generative mechanisms in motion. To this end, we conduct a case study of a digitalized public transport infrastructure to identify such triggers and explore their impact on its evolution. Our study contributes to the extant literature on digital infrastructure evolution in two distinct ways. First, we analyze, define, and propose three contextual triggers that improve our understanding of the generative mechanisms behind infrastructure development and growth. Second, we rely on this conceptual basis to sketch out the initial contours of a novel evolutionary theory of digital infrastructure triggers.

  • Three Roles for Statistical Significance and the Validity Frontier in Theory Testing
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 50th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - 9780998133102 - 9780998133102 ; , s. 5737-5746
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study offers a method for empirically testing theories operationalized in the form of multivariate statistical models. An innovation of the method is that it distinguishes testing into three separate forms, “effect testing,” “prediction testing,” and “theory testing,”where statistical significance plays a separate role in each one. In another innovation, the researcher specifies not only his or her desired level of statistical significance, but also his or her desired level of practical significance. Statistical significance and practical significance each serve as a dimension in a two-dimensional table that specifies the rejection region– the region where the researcher can justify the decision to reject the theory being tested. The boundary of the rejection region is the “validity frontier,” which ongoing research may advance so as to reduce the sizeof the rejection region.

  • Opportunities and risks of Blockchain Technologies in payments – a research agenda
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 50th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). - 9780998133102
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Blockchain technologies offer new open source-based opportunities for developing new types of digital platforms and services. While research on the topic is emerging, it has this far been predominantly focused to technical and legal issues. To broaden our understanding of blockchain technology based services and platforms, we build on earlier literature on payments and payment platforms and propose a research agenda divided into three focal areas of 1) organizational issues; 2) issues related to the competitive environment; and 3) technology design issues. We discuss several salient themes within each of these areas, and derive a set of research question for each theme, highlighting the need to address both risks and opportunities for users, as well as different types of stakeholder organizations. With this research agenda, we contribute to the discussion on future avenues for Information Systems research on blockchain technology based platforms and services.
