  • Digital Innovation as Design of Digital Practice : Doctors as Designers in Healthcare
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 51st Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). - 9780998133119 ; , s. 4594-4601
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Medical professionals are increasingly assuming the role of maker and creator. At the same time, digital innovations, as part of evolving information infrastructures, are becoming increasingly prevalent in healthcare. In this paper, we adopt a Schönian approach to understand how a medical professional, who is not an IS designer by trade, engages in the design of digital practice - turning what may appear as a failed digital innovation effort into a successful design of digital practice. Our inquiry suggests three pragmatic principles that call for further investigation: (a) professionals can make a significant contribution to design work by inventing means for fact-based, reflective engagement with the situation; (b) the reorganization of work practice involves organizational design, information system design, and communication design; and (c) developing design as digital practice entails the development of fact-based design practice and must engage practical theories.

  • How Does the Organizational Culture of Collaborative Networks Influence IT Governance Performance in a Large Organization?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 51st Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - 9780998133119 ; , s. 4941-4951
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In today's complex organizations, IT governance is an important managerial challenge. IT governance deals with decisions and responsibilities concerning IT. There are many factors influencing IT governance. One factor that has remained relatively unexplored by academic research is that of organizational culture. This research explores the influence of the organizational culture of collaborative networks on IT governance performance. A case study was conducted in a large complex company with several networks. The findings indicated that the networks desire different organizational culture types based on their priorities for IT governance outcomes. A clan organizational culture is desired when aiming for effective use of IT for asset utilization and cost effective use of IT. An adhocracy culture is desired when prioritizing the effective use of IT for business growth. Finally a combination of market and hierarchy organizational culture is desired when seeking effective use of IT for business flexibility and cost cutting.

  • Horizontal Affordances for Patient Centred Care in Hospitals
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 51st Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - 9780998133119 ; , s. 3170-3179
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While it is generally accepted that patient centred care should be the guiding principle for the delivery of health services, it is not yet clear how this should be digitalised. What is clear, however, is that the current IT solutions are not satisfactory. In this research, we suggest the affordance construct as an analytical lens to understand how technological artefacts and human agency can generate action possibilities to support horizontal process innovation by asking: (i) which affordances enable digitalisation of patient centred healthcare, and (ii) how can these identified affordances be leveraged to innovate patient centred digital hospitals. Our empirical evidence is a comparative study of two hospitals in Sweden and Norway. Our theoretical contribution is the identification of six horizontal affordances for patient centred care. The practical contribution is that horizontal affordances emerge through configurations of human actors and lightweight IT solutions, loosely coupled to heavy weight systems.

  • Responding to Enterprise Architecture Initiatives: Loyalty, Voice and Exit
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 51st Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - Washington, D.C. : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780998133119 ; , s. 2363-2372
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Many large organizations have on-going Enterprise Architecture initiatives. Key aims include achieving more organizational agility, and to tidy up a messy portfolio of IT silo systems. A holistic approach to IT architecture has been an accepted strategy, but the results of these initiatives have been variable. An under-researched aspect is how different organizational units respond to the call for a holistic approach. In this study, we investigate how different stakeholders connected to three ongoing projects responded to the call for EA. With a qualitative approach, we identify three options of response to EA initiatives: (i) compliance with the EA strategy, (ii) loyal but isolated response, and (iii) rebel solutions. We argue for the need of a more nuanced repertoire of actions for dealing with EA, and show how these responses are useful for understanding and managing successful EA.

  • Organizational Social Media : A Literature Review and Research Agenda
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 51st Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS 2018). - : Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences ( HICSS ). - 9781510856554 - 9780998133119 ; , s. 3832-3841
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social media refers to online tools that make it possible for users to create content, publish, share and communicate online. Social media use by and in organizations is a developing research field still in its infancy. The present paper presents a literature reviewon the subject of Organizational Social Media (OSM), starting and proceeding from van Osch and Coursaris's literature review extending to 2011. There view contributes to the IS research field by describing how the IS research field defines and categorizes social media, identifying what topics are currently interesting and suggesting future researchtopics. The findings suggest that to a great extent the IS research field focuses on internal activities e.g.communication and knowledge sharing made possible by social media and that a common definition of social media is lacking

  • Implementation challenges of Self Service Business Intelligence : A literature review
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 51st Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - Hilton Waikoloa Village, Hawaii, USA : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780998133119 ; , s. 5055-5063
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a traditional Business Intelligence (BI) system, power users serve less experienced casual users. Power users analyze and gather data requested by casual users, and produce the reports and visualizations that casual users base their decisions on. When data volumes and the usage frequency of a traditional BI system increase, power users have problems serving all the requests from casual users. The Self Service Business Intelligence (SSBI) approach can enable users to be more self-reliant and less dependent on power users. Although SSBI promises more benefits compared to a traditional BI system, many organizations fail to implement SSBI. The literature review presented in this paper discusses six SSBI challenges related to "Access and use of data" and four challenges related to "Self-reliant users". Awareness of these ten challenges can help practitioners avoid common pitfalls, when implementing SSBI, as well as guide SSBI researchers in focusing on their future research efforts.

  • Drivers of Digital Transformation in Manufacturing
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: The Digital Supply Chain of the Future: Technologies, Applications and Business Models. - : Shidler College of Business. - 9780998133119 ; , s. 3926-3935
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital transformation is one of the most current topics for the manufacturing industry. This transformation affects the operational value creation process, enables new ways of doing business and leads to fundamental changes in organizations. However, the implementation of new digital technologies, as well as the realization of these changes, still face many difficulties. It is important to understand organizational and individual adoption processes. Which drivers push the adoption of digital technologies in manufacturing? We used a qualitative research approach to gain in-depth insights from interviews with 16 participants. For digital transformation in manufacturing, we identified 12 drivers as well as perceived or expected advantages that arise with the technology use. Companies are mainly motivated by the goal of process improvement and demands communicated by their customers. We aim to strengthen the understanding of the whole disruptive and vast changing processes which are ongoing in manufacturing.

  • Instantiations of an ERP Implementation Methodology : A Critical Realist Case Study
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 51st Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). - : HICSS. - 9780998133119 ; , s. 4672-4680
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New or revised implementation methodologies are introduced by Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems vendors to improve the results of ERP systems implementations. In spite of an implementation methodology's potential and significance for practice, little attention has been paid to this object of study in enterprise systems literature. Moreover, current studies reveal contradictory findings and provide a fragmented understanding. The purpose of this paper is to describe and explain the emergence of an implementation methodology instantiations through the lens of a realist social theory underpinned by critical realism. Our qualitative study provides explanatory insights and a rich description of an implementation methodology instantiations generated over time. This study also provides guidance for practitioners, to anticipate potential implementation methodology instantiations and identify the conditions contributing to their occurrence and change, and contribute to a more coherent view on implementation methodology instantiations as an issue of organisational change.

  • The emergence of digitalisation in the context of health care
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 51st Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). - 9780998133119 ; , s. 3063-3071
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digitisation of medical records by means of Electronic Patient Record (EPR) systems promises to improve the overall quality of health care. However, studies show that the outcome of their use is mixed. Derived from a critical realism lens the morphogenetic approach is used to understand and explain how does digitalisation emerge in health care settings. We draw on a longitudinal case study of a hospital that implemented an EPR system. Interviews and observations were used as data collection techniques. The initial analysis identified three tentative generative mechanisms: data-sharing, process-streamlining, and connectivity mechanisms which help to describe and explain the emergence of digitalisation in health care context. By using the morphogenetic approach, two grains are seen to accrue: the critical role of digital materiality in organisational change and clarity about the interplay between the materiality of technology (an emergent property of structure) and agential reflexivity (an emergent property of agency).

  • Market knowledge and dynamic capabilities in creating competitive advantage in an international new venture
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 51st Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - Honolulu : University of Hawai'i Press. - 9780998133119 ; , s. 4301-4308
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on market knowledge and dynamic capabilities in creating competitive advantage in a local unit of an International New Venture (INV). This paper draws on the knowledge-based view of the firm and builds a conceptual model that illustrates the impact of broad and deep market knowledge on the local unit’s competitive advantage and performance. It is proposed that the INV unit needs dynamic capabilities in order to efficiently convert market knowledge into competitive advantage and then performance. Managerial implications, next steps of the research, and avenues for the future research are discussed.
