  • Working cowhorses in multispecies encounters
  • 2019. - 1

    • While the notion of the cowboy figures in different ways in literature on human–horse relations and human–animal studies more broadly, little is written about the lives and work of contemporary cowhorses. The iconic cowboy has been used as a symbol of a macho, violent masculinity, not the least in discussions on animal ethics, which raises questions about the implications for the horses they ride. Through an ethnographic account based mainly on participant observation on a cowboy crew on a working cattle ranch of the Canadian west, I explore in this chapter the everyday multi-species interactions of working cowhorses. A cowboy code of conduct towards horses is outlined as well as the challenges of its implementation. Building on previous scholarship on animal work and welfare, this chapter problematises the interpretation of aggressive and dominating behaviour of horses towards cattle. Finally, I offer some concluding remarks on methodological challenges we face when analysing multispecies ethics and horse welfare.

  • A bifocal perspective on the riding school : On Lévinas and equine faces
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Equine Cultures in Transition. - London : Routledge. - 9781138549593 ; , s. 193-206
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Redmalm’s chapter, “A Bifocal Perspective on the Riding School: On Lévinas and Equine Faces” draws on Emmanuel Lévinas’ ethics to study the ambiguous relationship between horses and leisure riders in riding schools. For Lévinas, ethics begins in the face-to-face relationship. Being bifocal, horses do not “face” humans in an anthropomorphic sense; however, deeply meaningful relationships emerge from the embodied horse-human reciprocity. The encounters at the riding school opens up the possibility of recognizing a Lévinasian “face” in horses in a wide sense of the term, but the prevalent instrumental approach towards horses as learning tools obscures horses’ status as possible ethical others. The riding school thus creates a bifocal view of horses as both partners in embodied emphatic entanglement, and instruments that riders must learn to handle and control. The riding school as such works as an environment where these two opposing versions of the horse are accommodated so that the potential tension between the two perspectives is alleviated. Nevertheless, it is possible to imagine alternative human-horse relationships by focusing on the situations at riding schools where equine faces are allowed to emerge.

  • Riders’ understanding of the role of their horse in sports dressage
  • 2019. - 1
  • Ingår i: Equine Cultures in Transition. - London : Routledge. - 9781138549593 - 9781351002479 ; , s. 179-192
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Given that the role of the horse and ethical questions regarding their treatment have become a source of dispute, the aim of this study was to explore how riders express, and understand, the role of their horse in the context of equestrian sport. The data consists of semi-structured, in-depth interviews with in total 27 amateur riders (15 Swedish and 12 Polish) practicing sports dressage. Riders’ quotes reflect a tension between the way riders have historically perceived the role of the horse in equestrian sport as predominately tools or instruments, and contemporary attitudes that consider animals as having their own mind and consciousness. Equestrian cultures are in transition, and it may be time for sport riders to seriously re-examine and re-evaluate the relation between themselves and their horse and how this affects the horse as a conscious and sensitive animal
