  • System identification techniques for obtaining linear models of large power systems with controllable devices from noisy measurements
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 2010 IREP Symposium - Bulk Power System Dynamics and Control - VIII, IREP2010. - 9781424474677
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper deals with the use of system identification techniques for estimating low-order black-box state-space models formodal analysis. It presents a method to estimate state-space models for large power systems with many controllable devices from noisy measurements. To excite the system low-energy pulses generated by the controllable devices are used. The input signals are the controllable set-points of the devices, the output signals are the speed signals of some generators obtained from Phasor Measurement Units (PMU). The Subspace State-Space System Identification (N4SID) and Prediction Error Method (PEM) are compared in sense of robustness using measurement with different signal to noise ratios noisy measurements. The method is applied in an extended version of the Cigré Nordic 32-bus test system. This model approach can be used directly for the design of a centralized controller coordinating the controllable devices with the aim to increase the damping in the system.

  • A probabilistic distance to the power system secure operation boundary
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 2010 IREP Symposium - Bulk Power System Dynamics and Control - VIII, IREP2010. - 9781424474677
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Estimation of power system operation boundaries is an important issue in power system engineering. To make an adequate approximation of the operation boundary, not only the geometric properties of the boundary have to be taken under consideration but also the stochastic properties of the future injected power. In this paper two different distance functions on the power system operation boundary are suggested. The methods used to find the distance functions assumes that the future injected power can be modeled by a diffusion process. The proposed distance functions can be used when an approximation such as a Taylor's expansion of the power system operation boundary is needed. It is then suggested to use the point on the operation boundary that minimizes one of the proposed distance functions, as the basis for the approximation. Another possible application of the distance functions is when wanting to control power system equipment in order to increase stability margins.

  • Analysis of data quality issues in wide area monitoring and control systems
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 2010 IREP Symposium - Bulk Power System Dynamics and Control - VIII, IREP2010. - Rio de Janeiro. - 9781424474677
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Synchronized phasor measurement based Wide Area Monitoring and Control (WAMC) system is becoming a reality with international research and development both in academia and industry. Timely and accurate data with high resolutions holds great promise for more responsible and advanced grid control and operation. Currently, most of the research focuses on the different control schemes and applications. A relatively less addressed aspect is the dependency of the WAMC system on the performance of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure, without whose support the projected functionalities of the WAMC systems will not be achieved. Possible input delay brought by the complex data transfer and processing processes in WAMC systems are presented at the beginning of this paper. Thereafter, simulations where delayed phasor measurements are fed to a typical WAMC application - Static Var Compensation (SVC) are conducted iteratively to detect its maximum tolerated delay. Based on this maximum tolerated delay, the consequences of missing certain data in the phaor packets have been studied. Furthermore, data quality requirements to design a reliable SVC function are analyzed based on simulation results. In conjunction with the requirement discussion, the paper is concluded by proposing a robust ICT architecture to mitigate the aforementioned data quality issues.
