  • Mastering model-driven engineering
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 2014 Innovation and Technology in Computer Science Education Conference, ITICSE 2014; Uppsala; Sweden; 21 June 2014 through 25 June 2014. - New York, New York, USA : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450328333
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The challenge of transforming the understanding of a problem into a validated solution is not a trivial task. Using the conceptual framework of cognitive apprenticeship we show two ways to guide novices towards becoming masters in model-driven engineering.

  • Students'performance on programming-related tasks in an informatics contest in Finland, Sweden and Lithuania
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ITICSE 2014 - Proceedings of the 2014 Innovation and Technology in Computer Science Education Conference. - New York, New York, USA : ACM Press. - 9781450328333 ; , s. 153-158
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ways in which informatics is covered in K-12 education vary among European countries. In Finland and Sweden, informatics is not included in the core curriculum, whereas, for example, in Lithuania, all students are exposed to some informatics concepts starting in the fifth grade. Bebras is an annually arranged international informatics contest for K-12 level, resulting in a large collection of data about contestants and their results. In this paper, we analyse contest data from the Finnish, Swedish and Lithuanian 2013 contests, focusing on students'performance on tasks related to algorithmic thinking. Our findings suggest that despite coming from different educational systems, students perform rather similarly on the tasks. The same tasks are difficult and the thinking behind picking an incorrect answer seems rather similar throughout the countries. The analysis also points out that there is a lack of easy questions - this needs to be fixed in order to not risk scaring students away.

  • Mining Job Ads to find what skills are sought after from an employers' perspective on IT graduates
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ITICSE 2014 - Proceedings of the 2014 Innovation and Technology in Computer Science Education Conference. - New York, New York, USA : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450328333
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We mine job ads to discover what skills are required from an employers' perspective. Some obvious trends appear, such as skills related to web and mobile technology. We aim to uncover more detailed information as the study continues to allow course content to better match the expressed needs. • Supporting Communication within Industrial Doctoral Projects : the Thesis Steering Model
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 19th Annual SIGCSE Conference on Innovation and Technology in Computer Science Education. - New York, New York, USA : ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education. - 9781450328333
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study presents the Thesis Steering Model (TSM), an instrument supporting systematic communication and collaboration between the different stakeholders involved in industrial doctoral projects. The results describe TSM and illustrate its introduction for seven doctoral projects within a postgraduate school in applied informatics. The experiences from the first two years in use are: enhanced communication, mutual understanding of academic and business values, and opportunity to the doctoral students to build a research identity associated to their own project.

  • Using Reflections in a Program Integrating Course
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ITiCSE '14 Proceedings of the 2014 conference on Innovation & technology in computer science education. - New York, New York, USA : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450328333 ; , s. 350-350
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A program integrating course runs over several years, shows the mainthread of the program, and its purpose is to enable students to becomemore professional in handling their studies, at the same time as thecourse has a positive effect on thementors, other courses and the program itself. This is achieved throughregular reflection seminars where students meet in small cross-gradegroups with a professor as a mentor.

  • Augmenting PBL with large public presentations : A case study in interactive graphics pedagogy
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ITICSE 2014 - Proceedings of the 2014 Innovation and Technology in Computer Science Education Conference. - New York, New York, USA : ACM Press. - 9781450328333 ; , s. 15-20
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a case study analyzing and discussing the effects of introducing the requirement of public outreach of original student work into the project-based learning of Advanced Graphics and Interaction (AGI) at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. We propose Expo-Based Learning as Project-Based Learning augmented with the constructively aligned goal of achieving public outreach beyond the course. We promote this outreach through three challenges: 1) large public presentations; 2) multidisciplinary collaboration; and 3) professional portfolio building. We demonstrate that the introduction of these challenges, especially the public presentations, had lasting positive impact in the intended technical learning outcomes of AGI with the added benefit of learning team work, presentation skills, timeliness, accountability, self-motivation, technical expertise, and professionalism.

  • Towards Identification and Classification of Core and Threshold Concepts in Methodology Education in Computing
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: "ITICSE '14. - New York : ACM Press. - 9781450328333 ; , s. -242
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research methodology is a quintessential component of science, but methods differ greatly between sciences. In computing, methods are borrowed from many fields, which causes difficulties to methodology education in computing. In our methodology courses in computing, we have observed a number of core and threshold concepts that affect students’ success. This essay describes a work in progress towards under- standing those core and threshold concepts in methodology education in computing, classified along two dimensions. We classify methodological concepts in terms of standard elements of research design in students’ projects in computing, and in terms of their centrality and difficulty. We present examples of three types of troublesome knowledge concerning methodology: the strangeness and complexity of methodological concepts, misimpressions from everyday experience, and reasonable but mistaken expectations.

  • The challenge of teaching students the value of programming best practices
    • We investigate the benefits of our programming assignments in correlation to what the students learn and show in their programming solutions. The assignments are supposed to teach the students to use best practices related to program comprehension, but do the programming assignments clearly show the benefits of best practices? We performed an experiment that showed no significant result which suggests that the assignments did not emphasise the value of best practices. As lecturers, we understand that constructing assignments that match the sought after outcome in students learning is a complex task. The experiment provided valuable insights that we will use to improve the assignments to better mirror best practices.
