  • Extension of Test System for Distribution System Reliability Analysis with Integration of Electric Vehicles in the Distribution System
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe. 2nd IEEE PES International Conference and Exhibition on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies, ISGT Europe 2011, Manchester, 5 - 7 December 2011. - 9781457714214 ; , s. Art. no. 6162763-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the years the electric power system has seen an exponential growth in terms of size and technology. A similar growth and development has taken place in the terms of probabilistic applications used to analyze the power systems. A literature survey was done to analyze the existing widely used test systems; IEEE RTS and RBTS [5]. Conclusions were drawn towards how these test systems could be updated or modified to be sufficient with respect to the modern power systems “Smart Grid”. Extensions to Bus-2 distribution system of RBTS have been proposed to include the integration of Electric Vehicles into the distribution system. A sample study investigating the effect of Vehicle to Grid supply on the Energy Not Supplied in the system has been carried out; the results for the same have been presented. The aim of the work is to be able to provide a test system with electric vehicles for probabilistic reliability applications.

  • The Modeling Multi-Terminal VSC-HVDC in Power Flow Calculation Using Unified Methodology
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT) Conference. - : IEEE. - 9781457714214
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, a new unified method for power flowcalculation in AC grids with embedded multi-terminal HVDCsystems based on voltage source converter is proposed. In thismethod all DC and AC equations are solved simultaneously inthe same iteration while there is no need to rely on resultsobtained from other iterative loops unlike the other methods. The method can be applied for any number of converters, any DC network configuration and any converter loss model. The algorithm is implemented in MATLAB and to validate theresults, they are compared to results obtained from the simulationsoftware SIMPOW.

  • Stochastic evaluation of maximum wind capacity in a radial distribution network
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe. 2011 2nd IEEE PES International Conference and Exhibition on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies, ISGT Europe 2011, Manchester, 5 - 7 December 2011. - 9781457714214
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes an optimization algorithm to find the maximum wind installation in a radial distribution network. The algorithm imposes a limit on the amount of wind energy that can be curtailed annually. The algorithm implements the wind turbine reactive power control and wind energy curtailment using sensitivity factors. The optimization is integrated with Monte Carlo simulation to account for the stochastic behavior of load demand and wind power generation. The proposed algorithm is tested on a real 20 kV Danish distribution system in Støvring. It is demonstrated that the algorithm executes reactive compensation and energy curtailment sequentially in an effective and efficient manner.

  • A Smart Energy system : Distributed resource management, control and optimization
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: IEEE PES Innovative. Smart Grid Technol. Conf. Europe. - 9781457714214
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a novel concept of distributed energy resource and consumption management, which proposes to design a networked and embedded platform for realizing a dynamic energy mix and optimizing the energy consumption dynamically. Based on heterogeneous wireless sensor networks and a local Web of Things platform, the environmental parameters and energy data can be acquired and processed in a distributed manner in real time. In order to improve understanding on how different environmental factors and user behaviors influence the end use of energy, we propose a User Profiling module to investigate the characterization of user's goals and behaviors in terms of energy consumption. Besides the wireless sensor networks, the User Profiling module acquires data also from a questionnaire which mainly concerns four categories, i.e. characteristics of the residents, electrical appliances, attitudes towards energy and building structural information. Furthermore, based on the real-time information from the sensor network platform and the user profiling module, an embedded Resource and Consumption Controller will then adapt automatically for instance the regulation processes of energy consumption in a household locally for the users, so that the costs of all energy resources will not exceed the predetermined budget and be regulated in a user-preferred way. © 2011 IEEE.

  • On spectral graph theory in power system restoration
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: IEEE PES Innovative. Smart Grid Technol. Conf. Europe. - 9781457714214
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A large penetration of renewable energy sources with volatile power generation imposes new challenges for efficient restoration of the power system after a blackout. Prolonged power outages are also characterized be uncertain load conditions due to cold load phenomena. To meet this challenge, this paper deals with the problem of how to restore a transmission system after a blackout under uncertain load conditions and volatile power generation. The main contribution is a approximate method which minimizes the expected dissipated power under random current injection and maximizes the short circuit power under random generator generator introduction. The method is demonstrated in a numerical example on the Nordic32 400 kV transmission system.

  • Signal Processing and Classification Tools for Intelligent Distributed Monitoring and Analysis of the Smart Grid
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe. 2011 2nd IEEE PES International Conference and Exhibition on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies, ISGT Europe 2011, Manchester, 5 - 7 December 2011. - Piscataway, N.J : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781457714214
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes a novel framework for an intelligent monitoring system that supervises the performance of the future power system. The increased complexity of the power system could endanger the reliability, voltage quality, operational security or resilience of the power system. A distributed structure for such a monitoring system is described and some of the advanced signal processing techniques or tools that could be used in such a monitoring system are given. Several examples for seeking the spatial locations and finding the underlying causes of disturbances are included.

  • Analyzing fundamental aggregation functions in power systems
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: IEEE PES Innovative. Smart Grid Technol. Conf. Europe. - : IEEE. - 9781457714214
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of Aggregators is receiving large attention when new business cases for Smart grids are presented. Several studies propose different schemes of aggregating load and/or production. However, many of these studies are tailored for one specific market or network, making the generic value of the work small. The objective of the work presented in the paper is to analyze the fundamental needs for aggregating small scale loads or production units from a technical, financial and regulatory point of view. The final results of the analysis can work as a foundation for developing more elaborate aggregation business cases. These can later be analyzed from a technical and economical standpoint by, e.g., simulations.

  • Optimal load management of electric heating and PEV loads in a residential distribution system in Sweden
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe. 2nd IEEE PES International Conference and Exhibition on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies, ISGT Europe 2011, Manchester;5 - 7 December 2011. - 9781457714214
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electrical distribution system is facing majorchallenges in the near future related to increased electricity consumption, increased amount of distributed generation (DG) and the introduction of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs). These could require large investments in the distribution system to maintain and operate the system in a secure way. However, the need to reinforce the distribution system can be avoided or postponed if the loads could be managed and controlled in order to reduce the peak load in the system. This paper examines thepossibility for such a load management scheme in a residential part of the distribution system in the city of Gothenburg, Sweden. The load management scheme aims to minimize the losses in the system by shifting the heat loads and PEV charging in time without reducing the comfort level of the customers. In addition, a price-based optimal strategy is proposed, assuming dynamic electricity rates, that aims to minimize the electricity cost forthe customers. The results indicate that the peak load can be decreased by the proposed load management scheme and that the number of PEVs that can be handled by the distribution system increases. However, dynamic electricity rates can cause increased peak power demand, indicating that either an aggregator or more advanced approaches for the electricity tariffs are needed to cope with the peak power.
