  • Visualization tool to support multi-agent mechatronic based systems
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON 2012 - 38th Annual Conference on IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. - : IEEE. - 9781467324212 - 9781467324199 - 9781467324205 ; , s. 4372-4377
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There has been an increasing interest from industry in distributed architectures since they promote a plug-and-produce and robust environment, where adaptability and fault tolerance are native. Much research has been conducted in this field mainly supported by multi-agent and service oriented technologies. Nevertheless the retrieval and visualization of information in distributed systems is a relatively unexplored area. Although the dynamic nature of the multi-agent systems allows gathering information in a prompt manner, doing so might affect the performance of the mechatronic agents. In this sense, the present paper details the architecture of a visualization tool that introduces a reliable but non-invasive approach to retrieve data from distributed platforms as well as a new way to visualize and interpret the information gathered from mechatronic based systems.

  • Towards a lightweight CEP engine for embedded systems
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON 2012. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781467324199 - 9781467324205 ; , s. 5805-5810
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Industrial process automation systems are adopting event based communication. Pushing control loops towards low- level devices implies a need for lightweight embedded devices that are able to recognize and to react to events. Atomic events however, such as a value read by an individual sensor exceeding certain value, do not separately suffice to capture scenarios where a reaction should occur to a sequence of low-level events matching certain pattern, rather than to a single atomic event. Therefore, it becomes desirable that resource-constrained low- level devices are equipped with some, possibly lightweight, form of event filtering and processing. In this paper we propose to implement a lightweight complex event processing using the concurrent reactive objects (CRO) model. A core feature of the CRO model is its s ability to react to atomic events. Between the reactions, which basically are function executions, the system remains idle, and thus does not occupy the CPU and is energy-efficient. Additionally, CRO models can be executed in an efficient and predictable manner onto resource constrained platforms and offers low-overhead real-time scheduling through exploiting underlying interrupt hardware according to given time constraints.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years a set of production paradigms has emerged to circumvent pressing production challenges. In particular the ability of composing lower order components to form higher order entities with more complex functionalities and reuse them to build yet more complex system has been widely explored. However material handling aspects have been tackled independently of the control/reconfiguration architecture. Traditionally transport resources have been assumed passive and the organization of the production has been treated as a scheduling problems that often ignores disturbances in the transport system. This renders most of the scheduling approaches too theoretical to be applied in real production scenarios and has motivated researchers to pursuit alternative approaches to this sort of production organization problems. In this paper a technical agent-based architecture that integrates control/reconfiguration aspects with material handling is detailed. The architecture supports the simultaneous usage of conveyor and AGV-based material handling systems and the addition of production or material handling resources is handled in a transparent way through careful generic interaction design. Overall the proposed architecture can be applied to any mechatronic system favouring re-configuration and minimizing reprogramming.

  • Towards an IEC 61499 compliance profile for smart grids review and analysis of possibilities
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON 2012 - 38th Annual Conference on IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. - : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781467324199 - 9781467324205 ; , s. 3750-3757
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electric energy system is changing more and more into a Smart Grid. A key technology in order to transform the actual grid is the information and communication technology. This means that advanced management, automation, control and communication concepts and systems have to be developed in order to cope with changing and challenging future requirements in the intelligent grid; especially the large-scale integration of distributed energy systems and electric vehicles. As a result of this trend, the future grid will consist of a huge number of intelligent electronic devices in order to manage the distributed and complex nature of Smart Girds. In order to guarantee a high level of interoperability, which is a major requirement for Smart Grids and its related components and devices, the International Electrotechnical Commission has introduced the IEC 61850 standard for power utility automation. Since it covers only interoperability and communication issues, a proper design, modeling and implementation approach is required. The main aim of this paper therefore is to discuss the usage of IEC 61850 together with the IEC 61499 reference model for distributed automation and the development of a related IEC 61499 Compliance Profile for Smart Grids

  • Reliable RSS-based Routing Protocol for Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON 2012 - 38th Annual Conference on IEEE Industrial Electronics Society: Proceeding. - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781467324212 - 9781467324199 - 9781467324205 ; , s. 3231-3237
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High reliability and real-time performance are main research challenges in Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSNs). Existing routing protocols applied in IWSNs are either overcomplicated or fail to fulfill the stringent requirements. In this paper, we propose a reliable and flexible Received Signal Strength-based routing scheme. Our proposed solution can achieve a seamless transition in the event of topology change and can be applied in different industrial environments. The simulation results show that our solution outperforms conventional routing protocols in both reliability and latency. Furthermore, the result also proves that the changes of the network topology have no impact on data transmissions of other nodes by our scheme, whereas conventional routing protocols are shown to fail to recover the network in a short time. Finally, due to dynamic weighting mechanism, the proposed scheme is verified to achieve significantly higher reliability in scenarios with obstacles and avoid installation troubles, compared to location-based flooding scheme. Thus, our proposed scheme is considered to be more suitable for IWSNs than other routing protocols.

  • Over-current relay model implementation for real time simulation & Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) validation
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON 2012 - 38th Annual Conference on IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. - Montreal, QC : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781467324199 ; , s. 4789-4896
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital microprocessor based relays are currently being utilized for safe, reliable and efficient operation of power systems. The overcurrent protection relay is the most extensively used component to safeguard power systems from the detrimental effects of faults. Wrong settings in overcurrent relay parameters can lead to false tripping or even bypassing fault conditions which can lead to a catastrophe. Therefore it is important to validate the settings of power protection equipment and to confirm its performance when subject to different fault conditions. This paper presents the modeling of an overcurrent relay in SimPowerSystems (\textsc {matlab}/Simulink). The overcurrent relay has the features of instantaneous, time definite and inverse  definite minimum time (IDMT) characteristics. A power system is modeled in SimPowerSystems and this overcurrent relay model is incorporated in the test case. The overall model is then simulated in real-time using Opal-RT's eMEGAsim real-time simulator to analyze the relay's performance when subjected to faults and with different characteristic settings in the relay model. Finally Hardware-in-the-Loop validation of the model is done by using the overcurrent protection feature in Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Relay SEL-487E. The event reports generated by the SEL relays during Hardware-in-the-Loop testing are compared with the results obtained from the standalone testing and software model to validate the model.

  • Migration of industrial process control systems into service oriented architecture
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: 38th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IECON2012), 25-28 October 2012, Montreal, Canada. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781467324205 ; , s. 5790-5796
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The procedure of migrating SCADA and DCS func- tionality of the isa95 process automation architecture to a Service based automation architecture is discussed. Challenges in such migration are discussed and defined. From here the necessary migration technology and procedures are proposed. The critical migration technology is based on the mediator concept. The migration procedure is based on a functionality perspective and comprises four steps: initiation, configuration, data processing and control execution. Its argued that these steps are necessary for the successful migration of DCS and SCADA functionality in to the automation cloud.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON 2012 - 38th Annual Conference on IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. - New York : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781467324212 - 9781467324199 ; , s. 3216-3220
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wireless communication is expected to improve the safety and the productivity in underground tunnels for industrial use. However the multiple shapes and structures of tunnels affect wireless communication characteristics in terms of signal propagation which is significantly different from terrestrial environments. This paper presents comprehensive broadband measurements and simulations of multipath propagation and path loss in two underground environments. The results can be used in the development of new communication systems in tunnels that provide industrial services.

  • A trigonometric velocity estimator using a resolver sensor in drive system applications
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON Proceedings (Industrial Electronics Conference). - 2162-4704 .- 2577-1647. - 9781467324199 ; , s. 2889 - 2894
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Resolver sensors are widely used in the industry to measure the rotor angle position in high performance drive applications. Different methods are employed to estimate the velocity by measuring the rotor angle position. A novel trigonometric velocity estimator is described in this paper that has a simple structure for implementation and there is no need for parameter tuning. The proposed method is practically verified in a permanent magnet motor drive system. The results confirm that the proposed trigonometric velocity estimator has a good dynamic and steady state response subjected to different speed command profiles.

  • Evaluation and comparison of a two-level and a multilevel inverter for an EV using a modulized battery topology
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON Proceedings (Industrial Electronics Conference). - 2162-4704 .- 2577-1647. - 9781467324199 ; , s. 2949 - 2956
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analytically evaluates when it is suitable to use a multilevel inverter in an electrified vehicle. The multilevel inverter is compared to a classical two level inverter for different operation points and for different drive cycles.Reliable models of the components which build up the inverter are needed in order to be able to calculate the losses. Analytical models for the losses are developed to be able to compare the two inverters. Since the two inverters utilizes the battery in different ways the losses in the battery is also considered. It is shown that in certain operation points it is an advantage to use a multilevel inverter to achieve a higher efficiency for the inverter but is also shown that in some operation points the multilevel inverter increases the losses in the battery. However, it is worth mentioning that there is a controllability on where in the battery the losses should take place. The multilevel inverter can also be used as a two level inverter in these operation points to minimize the battery losses.
