  • Intensity normalization of sidescan sonar imagery
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 6th International Conference on Image Processing Theory, Tools and Applications, IPTA 2016. - 9781467389105
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sonar imaging is currently the exemplary choice used in underwater imaging. However, since sound signals are absorbed by water, an image acquired by a sonar will have gradient illumination; thus, underwater maps will be difficult to process. In this work, we investigated this phenomenon with the objective to propose methods to normalize the images with regard to illumination. We propose to use MIxed exponential Regression Analysis (MIRA) estimated from each image that requires normalization. Two sidescan sonars have been used to capture the seabed in Lake Vattern in Sweden in two opposite directions west-east and east-west; hence, the task is extremely difficult due to differences in the acoustic shadows. Using the structural similarity index, we performed similarity analyses between corresponding regions extracted from the sonar images. Results showed that MIRA has superior normalization performance. This work has been carried out as part of the SWARMs project (http://www.swarms.eu/).

  • Single image super-resolution reconstruction in presence of mixed Poisson-Gaussian noise
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON IMAGE PROCESSING THEORY, TOOLS AND APPLICATIONS (IPTA). - : IEEE. - 9781467389105
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Single image super-resolution (SR) reconstructionaims to estimate a noise-free and blur-free high resolution imagefrom a single blurred and noisy lower resolution observation. Most existing SR reconstruction methods assume that noise in theimage is white Gaussian. Noise resulting from photon countingdevices, as commonly used in image acquisition, is, however, better modelled with a mixed Poisson-Gaussian distribution. Inthis study we propose a single image SR reconstruction methodbased on energy minimization for images degraded by mixedPoisson-Gaussian noise. We evaluate performance of the proposedmethod on synthetic images, for different levels of blur andnoise, and compare it with recent methods for non-Gaussiannoise. Analysis shows that the appropriate treatment of signaldependentnoise, provided by our proposed method, leads tosignificant improvement in reconstruction performance.

  • Detection and Spatial Analysis of Hepatic Steatosis in Histopathology Images using Sparse Linear Models
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON IMAGE PROCESSING THEORY, TOOLS AND APPLICATIONS (IPTA). - : IEEE. - 9781467389105
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hepatic steatosis is a defining feature of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, emerging with the increasing incidence of obesity and metabolic syndrome. The research in image-based analysis of hepatic steatosis mostly focuses on the quantification of fat in biopsy images. This work furthers the image-based analysis of hepatic steatosis by exploring the spatial characteristics of fat globules in whole slide biopsy images after performing fat detection. An algorithm based on morphological filtering and sparse linear models is presented for fat detection. Then the spatial properties of detected fat globules in relation to the hepatic anatomical structures of central veins and portal tracts are explored. The test dataset consists of 38 high resolution images from 21 patients. The experimental results provide an insight into the size distributions of fat globules and their location with respect to the anatomical structures.

  • Enhancement of micro-channels within the human mastoid bone based on local structure tensor analysis
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Image Proceessing Theory, Tools and Apllications. - : IEEE. - 9781467389105 - 9781467389112
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Numerous micro-channels have recently been discovered in the human temporal bone by x-ray micro-CT-scanning. After a preliminary study suggesting that these micro-channels form a separate blood supply for the mucosa of the mastoid air cells, a structural analysis of the micro-channels using a local structure tensor was carried out. Despite the high-resolution of the micro-CT scan, presence of noise within the air cells along with missing information in some micro-channels suggested the need of image enhancement. This paper proposes an adaptive enhancement of the micro-channels based on a local structure analysis while minimizing the impact of noise on the overall data. Comparison with an anisotropic diffusion PDE based scheme was also performed.
