  • Calculating Negative LMPs from SOCP-OPF
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ENERGYCON 2014 - IEEE International Energy Conference. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781479924493 ; , s. 1461-1466
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent research shows that non-convex OPF problem can be recast as a convex Semidefinite Programming (SDP) problem or Second Order Cone Programming (SOCP) problem. However, in the most SOCP OPF problems, there are some cases that conic relaxation results in a miscalculation of negative Local Marginal Prices (LMPs). This paper reviews the SOCP formulation of the optimal power flow problem proposed in [1] and then proposes one way of generating negative Locational Marginal Prices, LMPs, using this SOCP formulation. The proposed model is coded in GAMS and its built MOSEK solver and tested on a modified version of IEEE-30 test system.

  • Constructing Bidding Curves for a CHP Producer in Day-ahead Electricity Markets
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ENERGYCON 2014 - IEEE International Energy Conference. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781479924493 ; , s. 487-494
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The operation of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems in liberalized electricity markets depends both on uncertain electricity prices and uncertain heat demand. In the future, uncertainty is going to increase due to the increased intermittent power induced by renewable energy sources. Therefore, the need for improved planning and bidding tools is highly important for CHP producers. This paper applies an optimal bidding model under the uncertainties of day-ahead market prices and the heat demand. The problem is formulated in a stochastic programming framework where future scenarios of the random variables are considered in order to handle the uncertainties. A case study is performed and conclusions are derived about the CHP operation and the need for heat storage.

  • Impact on voltage rise of PV generation in future swedish urban areas with high PV penetration
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ENERGYCON 2014 - IEEE International Energy Conference. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781479924493 ; , s. 904-911
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There have been a large amount of statements from different countries, claiming that the integration of photovoltaic generation in the distribution grids can eventually impact the power quality and pose challenges for the distribution system operator. In Sweden, the level of penetration of small scale distributed generation is still low and no such problems have been observed. This study is conducted to investigate the voltage levels in an urban distribution grid when the level of photovoltaic generation is increased. The study is done by modeling the Swedish urban area by PSCAD. The aspects of the model include network design of a real distribution grid, everyday load, photovoltaic generation based on real data, photovoltaic penetrations at different levels and considers the current regulations in Sweden. The results indicate that there are no problems with overvoltages even with a high penetration of photovoltaic generation. Instead the risk of over-current through the installed cables seems to be a greater limitation. The loading of the distribution transformers is decreased due to the mix of commercial and domestic loads in the local grid.

  • Optimal design of a medium voltage hybrid fault current limiter
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 2014 IEEE International Energy Conference, ENERGYCON. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781479924493 ; , s. 431-438
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The connection of distributed generation increases the short circuit power which in turn might exceed the ratings of the installed circuit breakers. A solution is to limit the available short circuit power by increasing the grid impedance, but since there is a constant strive for lower losses and higher power transfer capabilities, this is not desired. The application of a fault current limiter (FCL) that can limit the current before the first peak enables a power system with high short circuit power and low short circuit current. This can increase the stability of the grid and reduce the requirements of other equipment. This work presents a simulation model to be used as an aid in the design of a hybrid FCL for a 12 kV AC system. The proposed model combines a transient analysis circuit model with an optimization module to obtain multiple sets of possible design parameters. The design is not straight forward since there is a trade-off between several of the design parameters.

  • Modeling of a detailed photovoltaic generation system for EMT-type simulation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ENERGYCON 2014 - IEEE International Energy Conference. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781479924493 ; , s. 916-921
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents a detailed three-phase grid connected PV model which includes important control systems required for EMT-type simulation. A one diode model for the PV array is used to simulate environmental constraints such as solar irradiation. A detailed control system including dc voltage control, inner current control, MPPT and PWM control are implemented in order to simulate the model during steady state and dynamic conditions. The PV model is merged with a simple distribution network to investigate the PV's interaction with the AC grid. Several simulation scenarios are presented in order to validate the performance of the model.

  • Converter Topologies for HVDC Grids
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ENERGYCON 2014 - IEEE International Energy Conference. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781479924493 ; , s. 1554-1561
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • HVDC grids have significant benefits and will likely play an important role in the future energy system. However, protection and fault handling aspects will be different from those of current ac transmission grids and point-to-point HVDC connections. Therefore, new power electronic solutions will be required. Different fault handling strategies are being discussed and the required converter hardware to implement these is identified. Also different converter topologies with the needed properties, mainly dc-side short-circuit handling capability, are described and compared.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The design of future energy automation and management systems requires Distribution System Operators (DSOs) to analyse and compare different technical solutions for determining which of these could be best implemented in their networks. This paper presents a methodology that helps DSOs carry out such a complex task. The methodology is based on the Smart Grid Architecture Model (SGAM) framework. It was implemented using a web-based application that facilitates editing and automatic analysis of SGAM architectures. The methodology was successfully evaluated in the context of DISCERN European research project.

  • Analysis of Three-level Buck-Boost Converter Operation for Improved Renewable Energy Conversion and Smart Grid Integration
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 2014 IEEE International Energy Conference (ENERGYCON 2014). - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781479924493 ; , s. 76-81
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The increased smart grid integration of renewable energy sources demands high power handling and wide controllability for the enabling power conversion technologies. The conventional energy conversion techniques are inadequate to efficiently handle the highly varying nature of renewable energy sources like wave, solar, tidal and wind. The present work examines the advantages of using a three-level buck-boost DC-DC converter to aid three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter based grid integration. There are two main reasons for using this converter. It can provide the conventional buck-boost capability at higher power levels for absorbing and conditioning the renewable source output. Besides, it can be used as a voltage balancing device to satisfy the input requirement for the three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter. The work includes complete operating range analysis of the converter for the combined buck-boost action and voltage balancing effects to understand its suitability for various applications. The converter switching modes of operation are also presented in detail along with essential example waveforms. The final results show good controllability bandwidth for the converter which makes it an attractive solution for smart grid integration of renewable energy sources.

  • Multi-regional Transmission Planning under Interdependent Wind Uncertainty
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ENERGYCON 2014 - IEEE International Energy Conference. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781479924493 ; , s. 1474-1479
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Planning and operation of power systems with large amounts of wind power is a challenging topic in nowadays power system researches. These studies assess the impact of wind power's variability and uncertainty on power system. Wind power uncertainty has some characteristics such as interdependent uncertainty between adjacent regions. This paper evaluates the effect of wind power's uncertainty and its interdependent characteristic between adjacent regions on cross-border lines investment in multi-region transmission systems. Transmission planners are the responsible bodies in each region and maximise their own region social welfare considering the transmission planning decisions of other transmission planners. In order to accomplish this task, the model developed in [1] for noncooperative transmission planning and uncertainty modeling is used with some modifications according to the objective of this paper. The approach is simulated on a 9-bus network consisting of three inter-connected transmission systems for two cases of (1) independent uncertainty between wind resources and (2) complete interdependent uncertainty between wind resources.
